if a disabled canadian marries an american with health insurance from his job, can the new spouse immediately?

have that health insurance too?
--------------------
It depends. Do you have any preexisting conditions that may prevent you from getting insurance? If you do, your American husband's insurance company might refuse to insure you. Or, if you fail to disclose any prior treatment (such as something as trivial as treatment for acne, yes it has happen), the insurance company might cancel your coverage before paying your medical provider for any treatments you have already received. Welcome to the good old USofA.

Is Health insurance a tax deductible?

I've been paying my mom's health insurance for the last couple of months. It costs about $450 a month. Can i deduct this amount wen i file my income tax refund?
--------------------
Probably not. You could deduct medical expenses such as health insurance if your mother is your dependent. If your mother is not your dependent, you could still deduct the health insurance if you provided over half of your mother's support, but she does not qualify to be your dependent because she had income subject to tax of $3,500 or more in 2008.

who will have an easier time paying higher wages and paying health insurance: big chains or small businesses?

Obama wants to raise the minimum wage to $10/hr and FORCE all businesses big OR small to pay for health insurance. Who can afford this more: big companies like Wal-Mart and McDonalds who use their size get economies of scale and reduce costs of materials, or the small mom and pops who have higher operating costs since they don't have the purchasing power and delivery systems that the big boys have?
--------------------
That alone won;t make enough of a difference. My husband makes more than that AND works a second part time job AND I am on SSDI. He HAS probably one of the best policies available and we still can;t afford to use it except in emergencies because of the co-pays and deductibles. **edit**Minimum wage going to $10/hr would only make what my husband already makes worthless and things even more difficult. Raising minimum wages only makes the cost of living go up as companies then have to charge more for their services in order to pay their employees.

How could i get health insurance when i only work part time......???

i work at albertsons....part time...they start everyone out there at part time...so i can't really get up to 40 hours a week now...and i don't know when i can work more hours...i really need health insurance....but i only get paid like around 6.50...so if anyone could help me...i would appreciate it...thanks
--------------------
OK, does that mean they don't OFFER group health, or you just can't afford it? Assuming you're under 30 and healthy, health insurance IS going to cost around $250 a month. That's just what it costs. If Albertsons doesn't offer you access to their group plan, you can get an individual plan from a local, independent agent. And NO ONE can live off of part time work, so you're going to have to get a second part time job.

do you think maternity care should be necessary care on private health insurance?

like if a woman is paying for her own health insurance, a necessary cesarean should be covered? Keep in mind that a pregnancy with complications could cost $30,000, and a cesarean costs about $15,000.
--------------------
Maternity should be a mandated benefit so long as you've had uninterrupted coverage and you've had your current plan for at least 10 months. Maternity should not be mandated for the person who isn't interested in getting health insurance until after they already need it. And, the health insurance companies should have some protection to keep the costs down for everyone.

do your parents need to claim me on their taxes if I'm on their health insurance?

I am a full time student and I am on my parents health insurance. I have my own job and when they claim me on their taxes it kills my tax return. They have Blue Cross and Blue Shield, so I'm not sure if its required by them but everyone that I have talked to that are on their parents health insurance are not claimed on their parents taxes. I was just wondering if this was something that was necessary for the insurance company.
--------------------
No they don't have to claim you on their taxes, but it helps them with their deductions while it will kill you final tax return amount. They can claim the health care premium as a deduction and any costs they pay for medical prescriptions or office visits you may have also. But they don't have to claim you as a dependant.

If someone makes just enough money to pay their bills without the extra burden of health insurance that they?

...don't need, then won't the new mandate to buy into subsidized health insurance hurt them and put them in the red? Will they have to become slaves to credit and have to borrow money in order to cover this extra expense that they could have avoided before and not be in debt? Would that make the banks and the HMOs happy?

OF COURSE! Been preaching that for days......this HURTS struggling families.

why are people against health insurance reform?

why are some people against health insurance supported by the government? I don't see any reason for that... is there any websites that list the reasons?
--------------------
Health Insurance Reform is most definitely needed. All change in our health care at this point in time is being used as a vehicle by the obam administration to enable the government to take over a larger part of the economy of the United States. If they are successful you will see during the time obama is in office a dramatic change in your personal situation as it is related to the economy and also your everyday life. Inflation will be rampant and your ability to maintain your current lifestyle will be impossible. Print this answer out and put it away and come back and read it again in three years. I would like to have the opportunity to prove my prediction to you if you have any doubt. Save this answer.

Most insurance companies have waived their 'pre-existing condition' because of how often people change jobs. This person might qualify for state aid or if their doctor claims them disabled, they can get disability if they qualify, after a 12 month waiting period.

Can an employer require an employee to take their dependent on their taxes for health insurance coverage?

I need to get health insurance for my kids and their dad was awarded the tax write off for them
--------------------
Yes, they can have that requirement, if it is clearly spelled out in the dependent eligibility requirement on your benefit plan. (Look in your Summary Plan Document/Certificate of Coverage under the section labeled "Eligibility" to see whether that's the case.) I used to work on Dependent Eligibility Audits for large self-funded corporations, and can tell you that there are many major corporations that actually do have this requirement. I wouldn't say that its a "common" requirement for biological children, but its not at all unusual for stepchildren. I once had to remove dozens of step-children from an employer's benefit plan after an audit, because they weren't claimed as tax dependents. State insurance laws vary, so there may be some individual states that prohibit this. However, even if your specific state does not permit it, if your employer is self-funded they can do it anyhow. (Self-funded employer plans are not subject to most state-specific insurance laws.) Check your plan documents to confirm whether it is specifically spelled out in the eligibility requirement. If its not specifically stated, then your employer can't require it. (At least, not without modifying the terms of your policy at the next open enrollment.) P.S. Some employers will allow alternate documentation, if you have a divorce situation where you don't claim the kids every year. For example, documentation proving that the dependent resides in your home or a divorce decree showing the custodial/tax exemption arrangement. You can ask your employer whether there is anything else they will accept other than a tax document.

Does Canadian health insurance cover in the United States?

My little cousin is visiting from Toronto, Canada. He has Canada's universal health insurance ...he got sick while vacationing in the U.S, and went to the ER. Will his insurance cover this? Please explain how this works. Thank you!
--------------------
Canada doesn't HAVE "universal health insurance". It's not insurance. It's government run clinics, for legal residents. To use it, you have to go to one of the (Canadian) government run clinics. So no. He has no insurance to cover this. Sorry.

Will Hillary Clinton universal health care program force all Americans to pay for health insurance?

How will those who are unemployed pay for health insurance under her plan?
--------------------
Or self employed. Its really not Universal Health Care first off, its mandatory health insurance. I think theres a big between health care and health insurance. Yes she is trying to force all americans to buy health insurance, and she is happy to tell you that the insurance companies think this is a good idea (duh). Yes she will garnish your check if you dont participate - the insurance companies support that idea too i'd reckon. edit for scar: The poor are not exempt, thus the word universal- she makes a pretty big deal about not excluding anyone. She gives poor people tax credits to help pay for theirs, why is the income tax system tied to a social program? edit for justjenn: Obama's plan makes affordable insurance available to everyone- meaning you can optionally buy cheap insurance. It makes insurance for children mandatory.

I have a peptic ulcer and no health insurance. I was wondering if anyone knows what I can do to stop the pain.

I've had this pain for years and I currently do not have health insurance and can not go to the doctor. For the past three days I have been in a lot of pain. I've tried milk, bananas, Zantac 150, and Pepcid AC and that was all in one day... I had moments when the pain wasn't as bad but it was still there. If you have any ideas that would be great. Thanks!
--------------------
Hi Deztani Here are some ideas on how to heal the issue. Causes of Peptic Ulcer In addition to bacterial and viral infections, peptic ulcer can also be caused by poor diet, food allergies, nutritional deficiencies, alcohol, smoking, and chronic stress. As mentioned above, various commonly used medications can also cause problems, especially asprin. In addition to aspirin, other NSAIDs linked to peptic ulcers include Advil, Clinoril, Feldene, Ibuprofen, Nalfon, Nuprin, Orudis, Oruvail, Relafen, and Tolectin. In severe cases of ulcer, internal bleeding can occur due to thinning of the lining of the stomach and/or intestines. Quick Action Plan for Peptic Ulcer 1. Avoid all sugars, refined carbohydrates, sodas, milk and dairy products, processed foods, preservatives, artificial sweeteners (especially aspartame), corn syrup, alcohol, white bread and white flour products, pastries, and hydrogenated and trans-fatty oils, as well as all foods to which your are allergic. 2. Emphasize organic, fresh vegetables and non-citrus fruits, organic grains, as well as organic, free-range meats and poultry and wild-caught fish. 3. Drink plenty of pure, filtered water throughout the day. 4. Miso soup and strained vegetable broth, made from cooking down a variety of organic vegetables, are healing and easy to digest, making them especially valuable for any digestive problems. 5. To reduce symptoms, eat small meals throughout the day, rather than following the traditional three large meals per day routine. 6. Certain herbs have anti-inflammatory properties, which can help repair the lining of the stomach and intestines. The best herbs for this are Echinacea and goldenseal, aloe vera, cayenne pepper, chamomile, licorice root, and slippery elm. 7. Therapeutic juices include raw cabbage juice by itself, or mixed with either carrot or celery juice; raw potato juice; wheatgrass juice; carrot, spinach juice; carrot juice; carrot, beet cucumber. 8. Soothing baths two to five nights a week can help to relieve symptoms. 9. If you smoke, stop, and also avoid exposure to secondhand cigarette smoke. In addition, learn how to effectively cope with and manage stress. 10. If you are currently taking aspirin or other NSAIDs, consider replacing them with safer, more effective natural remedies. 11. Nutritional supplements include vitamin A, beta carotene, vitamin C, and zinc, taken with a multivitamin/multimineral formula. Essential fatty acids, especial omega-3 oils, are also recommended, as are bismuth and the amino acid L-glutamine. Linseed oil can also be effective. It can be added to salads or over drizzled lightly steamed vegetables. Herbal Medicine: Both Echinacea and goldenseal are useful for treating peptic ulcers because of their ability to improve immune function, as well as their anti-inflammatory properties, which can help repair the lining of the stomach and intestines. These herbs also have strong natural antibiotic properties, making them useful for dealing with bacterial infections that often cause peptic ulcer. Shiitake mushrooms can be helpful due to their antiviral properties, as can aloe vera, cayenne pepper, chamomile, licorice root, and slippery elm. Other useful herbs include calendula, linden flower, marshmallow, meadowsweet, and valerian. Soothing herbal infusions include one part chamomile and two parts marshmallow root, or one part chamomile and one part linden flower or valerian (take one teaspoon three times a day). Homeopathy: Useful homeopathic remedies include, Arsen alb., Acidum nit., Belladonna, Calendula, Hamamelis, Lachesis, Nux vomica, and Silicea. Best of health to you

When to get health insurance for your newborn?

I am in my first trimester and just wondering when do I need to get health insurance for my newborn-the health insurance is United Healthcare and offered through my job
--------------------
Exactly what Kenneba... (it didn't fill in her name!!) said, Your deductible will either be two now (which will account for the newborn care at the hospital and all vaccinations and other check-ups) or it will shoot up to a "family" deductible which maybe 1/2 added to the top of what your current deductible is. You don't need to call to add your baby now, just at some point within 30 days of birth but I would call now and find out how it changes your plan and your deductible and you will always want to know what they will cover for baby at the hospital (like if you are planning on a circumcision, most insurances no longer cover this) and any "uncommon" vaccinations given at the hospital. With my first child I had a family plan to start so it didn't change one bit when I added my baby (other then premium increase) but with my second child I got screwed hard, my deductible double and went from a $7500 to now 15k, and basically it covered NOTHING and left me with huge bills that I am still working on getting down, 4 years later! So call and find out for sure, and most of all GET IT IN WRITING! Their "word" means nothing. Whatever they tell you make sure they send it to you in a plan of some type. You may also want to think of getting 2nd insurance though private if you have very high deductible that may double, then you can add your baby to the new policy and be better covered incase your 1st insurance didn't pick up the way you hoped. (It would only be covering your newborn though and not you as pregnancy is pre-existing, but it would cover your newborn without you on the plan)

Have you ever lived through a medical condition since you didn't have Health Insurance?

I have! My HMO kicked me out on January 1st, since I graduated from college last month, and it SUCKS! My right nostril is totally inflamed, and my sinuses aren't too great after a botched wisdom tooth surgery :( But I'll manage I guess :) Any health insurance-less horror stories from you?
--------------------
OMG yeah, I had a small patch of skin on my arm that just started eating away one day, it didn't hurt at all (and it didn't bleed or scab) but it behaved in every other way like an open sore, it got to be at least a half inch deep before it went away. That was scary though. I'm all for universal health care, we should have AT LEAST universal health care as a modern civilized nation For now take some Tylenol and some Sudafed and you should be alright, at least it will alleviate the pain. Ask friends and family if they have any antibiotics they can lend you if the condition gets worse

If you exclude yourself from health insurance, does that mean you exclude yourself from health care?

I think that's an important distinction. Without an insurance mandate there are many people who chose not to carry insurance. But that doesn't mean they chose not to receive health care. True - some people without insurance could pay for their own health care. But most could not which leaves the tax payer to cover their bill.
--------------------
No, it just means they get gouged when they decide to see a doctor. "...hospitals all over the country charge their highest prices, by far, to those who can afford it least — the 46 million Americans who don't have health insurance... Hospitals charge uninsured patients two, three, four or more times what an insurance company would pay for the same treatment...."

how do health insurance brokers get paid?

I am doing research on health insurance and need to figure out how health insurance brokers get paid. If possible, I also need non-partisan sources on the health insurance broker industry.
--------------------
I've been a health insurance broker for about 20 years. Brokers in almost all US states get paid commissions that do not affect the cost of their clients' policies. This is due to state regulations. In another words, the policy costs the same whether the client buys from the broker or from the company. Commissions are usually a percentage of the monthly premium the client pays. I work with all the Connecticut non-group health insurance companies and the percentage ranges from 7% to 25%. One company pays a flat fee of $17 per month per contract. The companies that pay higher first year commissions ususally pay less in the second and subsequent years than they do in the first year. It is a good business, but it is a lot of work. You get a lot of technical questions so you have to know your stuff. Also there are no big commission cases at least not if you focus on individual sales like I do. However, every month or every quarter, you will cash slightly bigger checks. Eventually you wil have a good income if you work at it. If you are planning to come into the business, good luck (unless you are planning to compete with me in Connecticut - just kidding there are plenty of clients to go around). Study hard; work hard; work with integrity and you will gain many new clients and friends. If you want to find out more about me visit my website. See below:

My health insurance company is cancelling my policy because my company did not pay the premium.?

I got a letter from my health insurance carrier saying my coverage was being terminated as my employer did not pay the premium for the last three months. However, They have taken the premium's out of my paycheck every pay period and they show it on the check. The insurance company also says I will be liable for any services they paid for during this period. What can I do.
--------------------
Unfortunately, the contract with the insurance company is with your employer and so if premium was not paid then the contract will cancel and no benefits can be paid after that time. Your issue is with your employer - what did they do with the payroll deductions if it wasn't paid to the insurance company? If they are unable to pay back premium and have the policy reinstated, then do they have a plan in place to provide health insurance back to that cancellation date? If not, they owe you the payroll deductions back and you will need to acquire insurance on your own. I would consider this a BIG red flag that your employer is not doing well financially or, at best, the benefits department is incompetent (neither is a good thing for employees). If your employer continued to take payroll deductions after they knew the policy was terminating and didn't notify employees, then I wonder if they aren't somehow implying coverage and might be forced to pay your medical bills - but I'm not a lawyer and do not know the answer to this. Good luck! Also, a good resource is... http://www.knowledged.info/go.php?link=i… Good Luck.

If someone is injured in a car accident, does their car insurance typically pay for their health care?

Or is it up to the person's health insurance (out-of-pocket if they have no health insurance)?
--------------------
If the other party was liable his liability insurance should pay. If the car you were riding in, was liable and they have medical. payments or the proper coverage then that insurance would pay. If the car you were riding in does not have the proper coverage then you would have to sue to recover any medical expenses you incurred. Your own medical insurance is not liable and will not pay if there is other coverage available to you.

does health insurance automatically cover maternity when pregnant?

I have pretty much no knowledge of health insurance. So, if when you find out your pregnant does your insurance automatically add maternity at no additional cost? or is it something that has to be included in the plan already before becoming pregnant? Any help would be appreciated.
--------------------
It has to be signed up for before becoming pregnant and in many cases you have to wait certain period of time before becoming pregnant in order to have coverage. It's called waiting period. Insurance plan that has maternity coverage is usually around $100 more or so. These is if you have private insurance. If you have insurance through your employer, it's different story and for best answer inquire from your HR department on maternity benefits.

Is a congenital birth defect considered a pre-existing condition for purposes of health insurance?

We may be switching jobs and, therefore, health insurance. I am worried about coverage for my daughter who has a congenital birth defect (cerebral palsy). is this considered a pre-existing condition and she will be denied coverage??
--------------------
Lots of variables here. If you're going to a large company with a group policy, you may be able to join during open enrollment with no exclusions. Or there may be a set time under which any pre-existing condition is not covered (3 months, say, or 6 months). It REALLY depends on the individual state insurance commissioner to set the standards and the individual companies to decide how to meet them. It may also matter how affected your child is. CP, as you probably know, is a variable disease. Some kids need little or no extra health care. Some need lots. If you fall more toward the "lots" you might want to condsider looking into Medicaid, under the "disabled" enrollment. This can be a better deal than regular insurance, and has no caps.

Why not keep health care privatized and only treat people who have health insurance or can pay themselves?

That would lower the cost on taxpayers and those who pay fairly into the health insurance. Those who cannot afford will have to die or find a doctor willing to work for free. This would allow the most freedom and most capitalism - two bastions of American independence.

yes, you can. however, after you enter all your medical expenses, including your health insurance premiums, you next have to deduct .7.5% of your adjusted gross income. after doing this, many people lose their health care deduction.

NP groups providing advice on private health insurance?

I was wondering if there are any nonprofit groups that provide information and advice on this kind of thing. Preferably one with a branch in Austin.
--------------------
You can always go to the TX Insurance Department website. But in order to give you advice about this sort of thing in Texas, legally, they have to be licensed to sell that type of insurance. Pretty much, the only people you'll see, are agents - because you have to do continuing education, etc. Just go to a local, independent agent. There's no obligation to BUY. I can tell you right now, if she's 25 and perfectly healthy, a good low/no deductible plan without maternity benefits is GOING to cost around $250 a month.

Why is Obama threatening to destroy my health insurance stocks and profits?

Keep away from my stocks and investments Obama and libs.....stay out of my pocket. Health care reform my foot. I got my insurance and a good one too. Why should I pay for insurance for bums who cant work hard to get theirs like I got mine? Romney for 2012 !!!!!!!!
--------------------
He is not. First of all, Obama is not going to bring in universal healthcare, a fact that many people (including those who voted for him) seem not to realise. He wants to make insurance more available to all. Second, of course universal health-cover sucks. That is why we in Western Europe have it. We think, hmm, our healthcare system sucks. I know, lets keep it. I guess that is the same with Japan and Canada as well. FACT - the USA spends more on healthcare PER PERSON than any other nation on the planet. FACT - the US has higher death rates for kids aged under five than western European countries with universal health coverage. That means that a dead American four year old would have had a better chance of life if they were born in Canada, France, Cuba, Germany, Japan etc, all of which have universal health coverage.

Is it possible to change health insurance companies with a pre exsisting condition such as cancer? If so how?!?

A dear friend has Cancer in her liver and Has a state health insurance. I had hoped to get her into cancer treatment center of America but they dont take that insurance. Is it possible to change insurance or is there any funding available for this problem? Please help ASAP thank You so much!
--------------------
Don't think that the Cancer Treatment Centers of America is a place that gives miracles to those with cancer. They don't do anything more than any major hospital does except they are quite expensive and don't take a lot of insurances. They might talk to you really nice and give you a massage and other things like that to make you feel better, but as far as treatment for cancer goes, there is nothing special going on there. They had to pull some of those commercials because they were misleading. If you watch the one where the lady gets cured, at the bottom there is a statement that says these results are not typical and do not assume you will have the same results. As far as your friend having state health insurance, I don't know if you are talking about state aid like welfare or she works for the state and has their state plan. I thought the new health insurance coverage that just passed that Obama fought so hard to get covered this problem of switching plans and then not being able to get coverage because of pre existing conditions. I believe that is no longer allowed, but you should check to make sure. You could call your congressman's office and they would be able to tell you.

ok i just watched the movie "Sicko" and i can for the life of me figure out how our health insurance companies get away with the stuff they do! can some one explain this.
--------------------
Sicko is fiction. Health insurance is heavily regulated. People who get mad at denials, are getting mad because either 1. they tried to "outsmart" the insurance company, and it backfired (ie, they're dishonest) or 2. They don't understand what they are buying. Insurance is a CONTRACT. It's controlled by CONTRACT LAW. Michael Moore is a liberal, who wants to bring Socialism to the USA. Look at government run healthcare in ANY COUNTRY you want, that has it. Look at how well it's run, and how long the lines are. SHeesh. If you like government housing, you'll LOVE government healthcare. And I sure hope you like the wait times when you call the DMV, and just imagine the hold time when you try calling the doc!!! Have you tried calling the IRS or Medicare office lately?? One more thing to think about - according to Sicko, the average Cuban spends about $250 a year for all medical treatment, including medications. But Sicko doesn't mention, that in some pharmacies, you can't even get aspirin. Or, that the average annual salary of a Cuban, is $1,000 (making healthcare 25% of their income). Or, that contrary to popular belief, Floridians are NOT jumping on rafts and trying to get to Cuba.

unemployed 18 to 25 year olds forced to have health insurance under Obamas plan?

if you where laid off, then your ok. But if you quit your last job you will be required by law to keep health insurance or be fined $2700/yr. And by the way thats $225/mo. for the most affordable which is the public option.

IF the plan were to happen....yes, every American would be required to be insured or pay the hefty fine.

Best place to purchase health insurance?

I am starting my own small business and need health insurance for my family. I won't go with Kaiser, please don't ask why. I need an HMO with no deductable or a very low deductable because in my area the Blue Cross, Blue Shield, HealthNet networks have pretty good doctors and hospitals within their "approved" networks. It will be a family-owned sole prop business. I live and work in California, but if there is value in incorporating in another state for the purpose of taxes or prices on health insurance, I guess I could do it...because I have not formally formed the corporation yet. I used to be under the impression that the best prices for Heath Insurance came when you worked for a big company, but things seem to have changed. I recently worked for another smalll family-owned business, and they got very good rates by incorporating and claiming a Headquarters in Washington. What is the best strategy to get the best insurance at the lowest rates for a small group- one family? Thanks!
--------------------
The misconception is that a person who owns a business can purchase group health insurance. Here are the facts, companies like Blue Cross, Blue Shield, HealthNet, have specific requirements for qualification for a business or what is known as "Group" insurance. Here are some of the major things you will need, first off you need at least two full time employees, these employees will need to be on payroll. You will need to show proof most common is a DE-6 (this is submitted to EDD to show withholding tax for employees, it will itemize payroll -hours worked, and withholding tax- if your employees are paid as independent contractors, you will not qualify for group health insurance). If you only have one employee on a DE-6 and you are the owner, you will need to show your Tax returns. Since your company is new, you should also be aware that the companies listed above also have a half of the quarter rule in business. You will need to also have Workers compensation insurance, in Ca. State Fund is the most popular for new companies. Another requirement is that you will be required to pay at least 50% of the employees cost, (not dependent) and also you in order to qualify your group you will need to meet participation, for the above companies it is normally 70-80% meaning that if you have 10 employees at least 7 will need to apply, unless they can prove that they have other insurance with a spouse (employer based). Here is the reality, no law says that you as a small business owner must offer health benefits, it is difficult enough to start up a business, you can purchase Individual/ family plans from the carriers listed above, qualification is based on your "health condition". I would advice you contact a broker, here in Ca. literally thousands available (I am one) I would advice interviewing several (call around) and pick someone who who mix well with.

Auto insurance doesn't cover oil changes, why should we need health coverage just to get a check up?

Why is the emphasis on lowering health insurance costs instead of lowering the price of health care? When I was growing up (70's and 80's) insurance was for "just in case" like car insurance only covers you for accidents. You don't need insurance to pay for an oil change, so why do is health care allowed to be so expensive that you need insurance just to get a check up?
--------------------
You don't have to have health insurance to get a check-up. Just like you said, car insurance doesn't pay for oil changes, but YOU have to pay for it, maybe $25.00. But if you get a complete check-up on your car, such as computer anaylsis, you may have to pay $150.00 - $600.00. The oil change and computer analysis on my car costs close to $600. I think you can get a physical check-up for less than that. If you don't have insurance, YOU have to pay for it. Healthcare is very expensive. Here are some of the reasons: Doctors and hospitals have to be insured with medical malpractice insurance. For a specialist, that coverage could cost as much or more than $100,000 per year. The hospitals medical malpractice insurance is greater than that; in the millions. Doctors have to earn a good living just to pay the insurance, in addition to their living expenses, student loans, etc. All the technical instruments that hospitals and doctors use are very expensive in this day and age of technology. Some are valued in the millions of dollars. Somebody has to pay for those. Some medications are extremely expensive. I'm a cancer patient. So far my medical bills are nearing $750,000. My chemo treatments are over $20,000 per month. Thank God for insurance. Remember, this is not the 70's and 80's, so doctors and hospitals are not using 70's and 80's technology. BTW, an oil change in the 70's was about $6.00.

I don't mean to sound stupid hear, but I need some advice on health insurance?

I'm looking to buy some health insurance, but I don't know what everything is. So a few questions, plain english answers please. 1. I know that a deductible is the portion an insurance company won't pay. So my question is this, Do I have to pay the entire deductible out of pocket before my insurance will cover anything? 2. Coinsurance is where I pay a portion and they pay a portion, but what if it says the percent is zero, does that mean I pay nothing besides my deductible?
--------------------
Yep. Deductible is what you must pay yourself, before the insurance company pays anything. Coinsurance is when you and the insurer pay a % of the cost (you pay 30%, they pay 70% for example). If it does say 0% coinsurance, that means that you pay nothing after the deductible (besides copays etc)

Approx how long does it take for a health insurance company to pre-approve an oral surgery?

I'm waiting for my moms health insurance company to pre-approve the surgery to remove my wisdom teeth (they hurt, dang it) and I'm wondering about how long it should take
--------------------
Health insurance usually doesn't cover the cost of wisdom tooth extraction. That goes threw your dental insurance... and it is either approves or not approved. I Just recently got my wisdom teeth taken out under general anesthesia. It was completely covered. Mt insurance told me it was a $25 co pay but when i left they said there wasn't a co pay? good luck!!!

Bills have to be written in committee in both the House and Senate before they are sent to the floor for debate and vote. Right now, there numerous bills in the House, a couple in the Senate. Those bills have to be debated, amended, voted on in committee, before they can even be considered ready to be presented to the floor. They then must be assessed by the Congressional Budget Office. Then they generally do an informal poll to determine if there will be enough votes to pass. Making suggestions, calling representatives, giving your input and opinion is important. But until a bill is ready to come out of committee, there are no answers to anything, because nothing has been finalized yet.

Denied health insurance now asking for HIPAA and Premium, can someone help?

I applied for health insurance at kaiser permanente because I left my last job in July and now have no health insurance. They denied me due to a pre-existing condition, but then I got a letter in the mail saying that if I provide $491 and a HIPAA certificate showing that I have had 18 months of continuous coverage then I can enroll. The problem is not the money, it's the hipaa certificate. If I haev not had insurance between July & now (october) then I cannot get certified right? What the heck can I do then to get full insurance? I have looked into short-term insurance but I really would like full coverage, and I am not sure if signing up for short-term insurance will do something to my HIPAA rights?
--------------------
The HIPPA certificate is provided by your last insurance plan. They are offering you COBRA but you must sign up within 63 days from when your last policy ended. The short term policy will void the COBRA (HIPAA) rights but since we are over the 63 they are voided already.

What are some Great Health Insurance companies?

I'm looking for some health insurance that won't break the bank? I just got a job and I havent had any Health insurance since I was about 16 so I have no idea of my current health or anything...eventually I would like to goto the doctor, get a physical, goto a dermatologist etc.. So I was hoping I could get a list of Health insurance companies that offer great coverage and offers toa variety of different clinics and hospitals and specialty doctors?
--------------------
Health insurance companies do not write policies in all states. There are 1300 different companies around the country and each company has several different plans. You'll need to contact a local agent that works with all of the major companies in your area for assistance. The agent can help you find the best plan for your situation and budget. They can explain what you get and, more importantly, what you don't get with each plan. They can work with you to find out if your health condition that you need to see the dermatologist for would be covered or if you would be decline coverage for that condition or for everything. There is no extra charge using an agent.

How come Hillary Clinton didn't pay her staff health insurance bills?

Among the debts reported this month by Hillary Rodham Clinton's struggling presidential campaign, the $292,000 in unpaid health insurance premiums for her campaign staff stands out. Clinton, who is being pressured to end her campaign against Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination, has made her plan for universal health care a centerpiece of her agenda. The campaign provides health insurance to all its employees, their spouses, partners and children — and that wasn't interrupted by any lag in payments to insurance providers, said Jay Carson, a Clinton campaign spokesman. He said the campaign this month paid off all outstanding bills to Aetna Healthcare and CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield. Those payments will be reflected on a report the campaign will file this month with the Federal Election Commission, which Carson said will show "zero debt owed to both vendors."

How can a high-risk individual obtain health insurance???

I'm been having a rough time finding insurance, you guys are about my last resort. My employer won't offer me health insurance till November and I am being constantly denied by health providers due to pre-existing condition. Any ideas?... I live in Ohio if it helps.
--------------------
Did your last employer cover you? Were you offered COBRA? If you were offered COBRA, you should contact an insurance agent that specializes in life and health insurance as they will know what programs will work for you the best. Your chances of getting insurance are slim to none at this point unless you want to pay A LOT for it. Have a pre-existing condition? How does the State of Ohio provide access to the medically uninsurable? The number of non-elderly uninsured in Ohio is 1.3 million. Ohio requires HMOs and insurers in the individual market to hold annual open enrollment periods during which they must accept all individuals who apply for coverage up to statutory limits. If there is no previous coverage or the individual is not HIPAA eligible, pre-existing condition exclusions may limit coverage for up to twelve months related to conditions in existence during the six months prior to coverage. Insurers must offer basic and standard plans during open enrollment. For more information, contact the Ohio Department of Insurance Consumer Services Division at 1-800-686-1526 or (614) 644-2658, or the Department’s website at www.ohioinsurance.gov.

I'm going to college, so I don't live with my family anymore. When Living with my family, I had medical, since my Mom was deaf. So when I moved out, I don't get it anymore. I need to find a cheap enough dental insurance and health insurance or maybe even both as a pack. Does anyone have any suggestions?
--------------------
If you're a full-time student at an accredited university, then chances are that you are already covered by the student health insurance. It may not cover stuff like hospital stays or the ER, but you would be able to see a doctor, maybe a dentist (if available on campus through a dentistry program), and get medications. If you don't have this available, your other option is to get a job that offers benefits to employees. Hope this helps.

If you go to school out of state and use their health insurance, does it still cover you when you're at home?

For example if you live in VA and go to school in NY, and use your university's student health insurance, will it cover you if you go back to VA for spring/summer breaks?
--------------------
I am pretty sure that it will, but you may have to be a small user fee on top of what they cover. I know that up in Canada, if you were to were to have health insurance in Ontario for instance, and you went to Alberta, you would still get covered, but where it comes the difference, is the amount of coverage. The province or state that you had it initiated in, would be fully covered, but in another province, you may need to pay a user fee such as 10-20% of the service, or a flat rate that is set out by that province or state. Hope that this helps you!:)

Should every American be forced to buy health insurance that will become more expensive and less competitive?

Should every American be forced to buy health insurance that will become more expensive and less competitive due to increasingly heavy-handed regulations that tie the hands of insurance companies from meeting their customer's needs? Is this Baucus bill just another Single-Payer Trojan Horse designed to break the private insurance business model once and for all?
--------------------
No, they should be forced to buy insurance that is cheaper and more competitive. I am always amazed how many Americans seem not to be aware about the real healthcare issues relying instead on FOX and other sources to spread lies about the healthcare system of the USA and those abroad. I mean, if healthcare in nations with universal coverage is so bad, why do they keep it? Obama wants to make insurance more available to all and change the system so that it gives the American people value for money [1]. He also wants change so that the insurance companies find it harder to get out of paying for treatment. The system he is proposing looks similar to that which works in Taiwan where private companies are involved in providing healthcare [2]. Obama campaigned on reforming the healthcare system. He said he wanted to make insurance more available and he was elected by the American people to do this [3]. FACT - the US has higher death rates for kids both for kids aged under one and those under five than western European countries with universal health coverage [4,5]. FACT – American insurance companies push up prices and work to stop paying out claims on those they cover [6]. FACT - the USA spends more on healthcare PER PERSON than any other nation on the planet [7]. That means that a dead American four year old would have had a better chance of life if they were born in any western nation with universal health coverage. If you do not like the policies that Obama was elected to bring in, he can always be voted out of office in 2012. But if you disagree with the facts, please let me know. I am always willing to learn, but please provide proof. None of those who disagree with me have been able to do that so far.

Why is it that peope who engage in highrisk behaviors are allowed to be on the same health insurance plans as?

as the people who are low risk? People who smoke drive up the costs of everybody's health care expenses! Maybe smokers should be covered on separate policies or be covered at higher rates than the rest of us who do not smoke. And how about people who damage their livers from drinking too much? Why are they allowed to be covered on our insurance plans? Maybe we shouldn't require insurance companies or govt. to pay for "self-induced" conditions resulting from the voluntary abuse of the body such as drug use, smoking, drinking, etc. Do you want YOUR money used to pay for those sorts of expenses?
--------------------
Believe it or not, there is at least one group that has pooled it's resources to do this. They aren't a genuine insurance company, but members do send in monthly amounts to help with keeping it going as well as contributions to help some who are going through Cancer, surgeries, etc. It is a more personal service, and I've read testimonials of people who were supported both in finances and compassion. Sounded interesting, I just never had the money for that or for insurance. And for what it's worth, I strongly disagree that we each have some inherent "right" to being insured, and yes, I suffer severe medical problems. I don't expect my Government to automatically insure all of us who can't afford it. The entire medical care industry in this nation is going to self-destruct because of how it's set up-it's just a matter of time. I have learned to be pro-active with my own health care, done the research, and treated some severe "untreatable" (with mainstream medicine) conditions with fabulous results. When you are motivated, it is amazing to discover the research done in Europe and other countries on plant and other matter in it's whole form. You get the science with no side-effects and no AMA or drug companies to patent/regulate/price it out of reach.

Who benefits most if 26 million Americans are given free health insurance? Who pays for it?

Isn't it the insurance companies and health care providers the same greedy bastards who have been sticking it to us in the past who will benefit the most? And who pays the bill? Well maybe the emergency rooms where free care has been provided in the past will be less crowded at least.
--------------------
The middle class and poor will benefit the most. The rich are going to be the ones paying for the bulk of the expenses, but this is how society works. Those who can afford it take care of those who cannot, and in turn, this gives you a healthy society where less people die and less people get sick. The spread of sickness will decrease, and attendance to jobs will increase. Only selfish people are against universal healthcare. Every other industrialized country has it, except America, because America is full of selfish bastards. I believe that since we do not have universal healthcare we don't even have the right to call ourselves a 1st world country... we're now developing.

World travel insurance for Canadians without provincial health insurance?

World travel insurance for Canadians without provincial health insurance I am looking for an international backpacker medical travel insurance provider that doesn't let the fact that my MSP (or similar provincial health insurance) is no longer valid. I have been out of Canada for 3 years and certain insurance providers require a provincial plan from the home country of the traveler to be in effect before providing insurance. I need to find a reasonably priced alternative catering to backpack travel (without the requirment of needing to return home withing a period of time). My MSP is no longer valid. Thx.

With all the delays of travel, more of the burden of these extra expenses is being passed on to us by the airline carriers. You may not need alot of coverage, but it is not a bad idea to consider some protection. The more vauable and important your trip, the more you should consider covering it with travel insurance. Why not have single payer health insurance and cut out the middle man the greedy health insurance companies?

Screw that. People that want universal health insurance just want somebody else to pay their bills. I for one dont want to pay for some crack-addict sex pervert who needs detox & aids treatment.

Will an unpaid emergency room bill keep me from being able to buy health insurance, OR hurt my credit rating?

I have an emergency room bill which I have not yet paid and I'm wondering if it will keep me from being able to buy a health insurance policy and if the unpaid bill hurts my credit rating. The letters they send says it will hurt my credit rating, but most people tell me they're just trying to scare me and that ER bills don't hurt your credit rating. Anybody here know for SURE?
--------------------
Yes, eventually that unpaid medical bill will go into collections, and it CAN hurt your credit rating. It will have no bearing on you getting health insurance, though. Try this site http://top-usa-health-insurance-comparator.blogspot.com/ Here you can get quotes from different health insurance companies in your area, its the best way to find an affordable insurance with a reliable company.

Does anyone have a real argument against non-profit health insurance?

Universal health INSURANCE administered by a federally chartered non-profit corporation would relieve employers of paying for health INSURANCE for their employees. As many employers are dropping such coverage anyway, not to mention dropping many of their employees we're going to have to do something. We'd better cut the best deal we can to provide the greatest good for the greatest number or land up no good for anyone. Let's not hear arguments against 'socialized medicine' or 'government health CARE'. Stick with non- profit UNIVERSAL HEALTH INSURANCE.
--------------------
Medicare is a universal single payer system that includes ALL Americans over 65. People chose their own doctors and the Government doesn't assume decision making. Overhead cost is 3%. John Conyers' H.R. 676 - is a favorite of health care reformers who back a single-payer system. This plan would expand Medicare for all Americans. The bill, which will again be H.R. 676, is one of the more elegant to be introduced in the House, clocking in at just a few pages. The plan is simple: everyone is eligible for a version of Medicare under a new U.S. National Health Insurance Program. The program would effectively put private insurers out of business. What to do with all those employees? Hire them, says Conyers' bill. "The Program shall provide that clerical, administrative, and billing personnel in insurance companies, doctors offices, hospitals, nursing facilities, and other facilities whose jobs are eliminated due to reduced administration (1) should have first priority in retraining and job placement in the new system; and (2) shall be eligible to receive 2 years of unemployment benefits." Conyers, a Michigan Democrat and chairman of the Judiciary Committee, last introduced his bill, which garnered 93 cosponsors, in February 2007. It was referred to committee but never given a hearing.

can health insurance be deducted from my last pay check?

I have just finished my probation period and filled out paperwok for health insurance, but was terminated. When I looked at my pay stub insurance had been deducted before I had received coverage material!! Is that legal?

No, you should be reimbursed that amount.

what is your opinion on Free Health Insurance?

many people think that free health insurance is a good idea. Personally i think its terrible. what's your opinion and why.
--------------------
Of course, the insurance is not "free" because someone is paying for it. In Canada, there is a combined 15% provincial-federal sales and services tax, and income taxes and gasoline taxes are higher too, so don't worry, my dear Canadian friends, you are paying for your health care, one way or the other. The main problem with government-run health insurance, and government-run anything, is that it tends to be inefficient. As Canadian Prime Minister Harper has acknowledged, wait times in Canada are often excessive. The free market generally sorts things out better and more efficiently than bureaucratic dictates from on high. We need to regulate the health insurance companies, and establish standards for their operation, but we also need to retain the incentives of the free market. For these reasons, I am opposed to national health insurance.

Health Insurance with a congenital heart defect?

I need to purchase private health insurance for my son, who was born with a congenital heart defect. He has had surgery to correct (3 years ago) and requires no additional treatment. He does see a cardiologist once a year, though, strictly routine. Two questions: (1) Is health insurance like credit cards, i.e. if you apply to too many, it looks bad on your record? (2) Does anyone know of an insurance company and/or plan that would likely accept him? He's been denied coverage by one, but I don't want to keep applying if it will ultimately hurt his record. Thank you.
--------------------
1. No. 2. Assuming he's a minor, he's going to have a really, really, really hard time finding a private company to take him. SO, he's the perfect candidate to apply under your state Children's Health Insurance Program. They WILL take him - if you let them know about the heart issue, they MIGHT qualify him based on his OWN income, and not the family income. If he's not a minor, his only bet is likely to be through his employer's group plan. Sure, they'll exclude anything heart related for 18 months or so, but then they'll cover it after that.

If I incorporate my small business, can I buy health insurance that will cover a pre-existing condition?

I really want to start my own business, but can't leave my job because I need the health insurance. Although I can buy private insurance, it won't cover pre-existing conditions. I have two that require medicine, but probably nothing much beyond that. If I form a corporation, will I be able to buy private insurance that covers my pre-existing conditions?
--------------------
Each state has different laws governing the insurance carriers in each state. That being said, it is likely that you can get a small group plan, and your pre-existing conditions would be covered immediately because you can prove continuous coverage, (employers plan.) Most likely you would not need to be incorporated, and would not need to purchase COBRA coverage if your effective date on the small group plan dove-tailed with your last day of employment. That's the good news. The bad news is that, in general, group insurance rates are about double that of an individual plan. If at all possible to obtain an individual/family plan, (even with a waiver or two,) I would consider this. If your pre-existing conditions are not too serious or expensive to maintain, it may well be worthwhile to purchase an HSA, (Health Savings Account,) qualified plan, paying for any medications/office visits with pre-tax dollars.

How Many 20-30 Year Old's Have Went Bankrupt Because They Had No Health Insurance?

Democrats keep saying that one of the biggest sectors of people not covered with health care is going bankrupt because they don't have coverage. Most 20-30 year olds are very healthy, needing only preventive care and minor surgeries, and can get most of their health care needs done at a clinic. Where is this so called proof that they keep asking for? Why should they pay for our aging baby boomers because they didn't buy insurance?
--------------------
Younger ages not so much, but almost 60 percent of bankruptcies prior to the sub prime crisis were related to health care according to the American Journal of Medicine in 2007. Its mostly middle aged people. But while a lot of these kids may not have filed for bankruptcy yet they are accumulating the problems now which could lead them to bankruptcy in the future. http://www.amjmed.com/article/S0002-9343…

I need to write an article in a newsletter about things we should look for in our health insurance plans for?

the new year. What types of things should I write about so that i can inform business owners and individuals what to look for in the new year regarding their health insurance plans?
--------------------
The big thing is to know their plan! For example - if they have a deductible, they need to exactly what it is and what it pertains to. (Hospital only, lab procedures, or all medical care.) They need to know what is covered - for example - if they have children, is preventative care covered? How much is allowed? Too many people get an ugly surprise when it comes to their kids' coverage. They need to know what providers (doctors, hospital, labs, etc.) are participating in their plan. You should also inform them what to do if they get a bill from a provider. The steps are: 1. Find out the exact reason for the bill - is it a copay, co-insurance, or a denied claim? Most plans send out EOBs (Explanaton of Benefits) to members - if not, they should call the insurance and get one. 2. If it's a large bill, call the provider and make a payment agreement. (If it's something the insurance has determined to be patient liability, RARELY can it be discounted further - the insurance has probably already discounted it, unless it's a non-covered service - and for a provider to further discount from what the insurance states is patient responisibilty, it's a violation of their contract. For a non-covered service, it can be discounted if the patient asks.) If the bill is a result of a denial by the insurance, it's the patient's duty to inform the provider that they are going to appeal the denial and then the patient has to appeal it. 3. If an appeal is in order, the patient then calls the insurance and asks exactly what the process is - including contact info. Then follows that process to the letter. You'd be surprised how many people don't know this stuff!

How is health insurance interstate commerce?

Proponents of the health reform claim that the basis for its constitutionality lies in the commerce clause, the right of congress to regulate interstate commerce. However, insurers are barred from selling policies to people in another state. One of the things that has been debated (although not included) is opening up insurance to interstate competition. So my question is, if health insurance right now is very obviously NOT interstate then how can the commerce clause be used to justify passage of this bill? What interstate commerce are they regulating?
--------------------
If you look at it long enough while squinting your eyes just right, then EVERYTHING is "interstate commerce"... That poorly-formulated clause in the Constitution has been abused to extend the Federal control over the States and the Citizens for decades, if not centuries :-(

where can i get cheap health insurance for 3 months?

--------------------
? Your taxes have nothing to do with health insurance (yet). How 'bout 'I don't want to lose my house from not having insurance." That would be a more appropriate statement. You just need a temporary plan. I have links to a half dozen different companies and information on my site.

Can an health insurance policy be purchased on an newborn, without insuring the parent?

Issue: An unmarried college student, living at home, and covered on her parent's health policy as a dependent is pregnant. The newborn will be her dependent, not her parent's so she will need insurance on the child only. Are stand alone policies available for children?
--------------------
All health insurers cover children, although most will state they have to be at least 30 days old first. Contact the mother's state's insurance commissioner's office and ask for a list of insurers issuing individual policies there. Another possibility is the state's Children's Health Insurance plan (this is not the same as Medical Assistance or Medicaid). All states have this federal program. Contact the Dept. of Social Services in the county where the mother resides.

Why were people booing Obama when he said no health insurance for illegal aliens?

First, who was booing him? cus it seemed like the republicans were.... Second, why the HELL would we give health insurance to people who don't even belong in this country in the first place? that is just going to be another incentive to stay in this country illegally...

H.R.3200 America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009 (Introduced in House) SEC. 246. NO FEDERAL PAYMENT FOR UNDOCUMENTED ALIENS. Nothing in this subtitle shall allow Federal payments for affordability credits on behalf of individuals who are not lawfully present in the United States.

If republicans are successful in maintaining increasing health insurance costs and reduced benefits?

Is there a way to hold them accountable for the continued increase of uninsured Americans, increase in family bankruptcies due to health costs, and closure of small businesses due to double digit health insurance costs?
--------------------
It sounds like you think republicans are totally against doing anything to help the health care reform and that is not true at all. There are plenty of ideas being brought to the table by the republicans. The thing that is causing such a stir is the dems idea to create the government option and force everyone to get health insurance..

Personal family health insurance with deductible $5000 or less?

Trying to find a Health Insurance plan with a deductible of $5000 or less. Found a Blue Cross one for about $7500 but that's to much since I only make $15000 a year.
--------------------
There are many plans available with deductibles of $5000 or less. Visit a local independent agent to find the best plan for your situation since plans and companies vary by location. Many individual plans will have doctor visits and prescriptions without having to meet the deductible first. Also, you may be interested in an HSA qualified plan where you can save some money in a savings account to help pay the deductible. Even if you have a higher deductible the hospitals will work with you to make the deductible payments.

Where can I shop for health insurance?

I need to purchase health insurance for my family. Where do I go or who should I call?
--------------------
You need a trusted adviser to help you through the process of purchasing health insurance so that you understand what you are purchasing. Some may suggest going on line to get a quote but you probably already know that there is much more to health insurance than price. Some might even suggest a discount plan which is not insurance at all. Ultimately, you are the one who determines the affordability of your health insurance plan by deciding how much you will participate in sharing the cost of your health care with your insurance company. If you choose a plan that covers everything i.e. doctors office visits, prescription drugs, preventative health benefits, maternity coverage as well as low deductibles, low copays and optional vision and dental benefits your monthly premiums will be significant. On the other hand if your family is young, healthy and use the health care system infrequently you could consider a plan that covers only the major health catastrophe which will result in a relatively low monthly premium. You then can use the monthly premium savings to pay for the occasional doctor visit and still come out ahead. Check with the agent that writes your home or auto insurance he/she can provide you a health insurance proposal that takes into account your budget and health status. They can answer questions as to what is and is not covered by the policy, explain deductibles and copays and show you the hospitals and doctors that participate in the network. Use the Internet to educate yourself but use an agent to purchase the coverage.

My husband was offered Aetna Health Insurance but we're thinking about getting coverage through my company. We have Multiplan PPO there.

Aetna is a good company, but along with all the other major health insurance companies they are like automobile manufacturers. They both offer a variety of product, from the basic low end model all the way up to the model that's fully loaded with all the options. You'll just need to weigh the benefits with the premium on both plans. No one here will know what benefits are offered.

Do you have to have health insurance to have Rhinoplasty?

Just wondering if you have to have health insurance for a nose job.
--------------------
No, as a matter of fact most health insurance plans will not perform the surgery unless paid for out of pocket. It is considered an elective (not necessary...cosmetic) surgery. So, no you don't have to have insurance, but you have to have money to pay for the full cost of the surgery unless you can prove that it is a medical problem secondary to recurrent sinus infections, breathing problems and in this case yes you would need insurance for it to be taken care of...no insurance, again then full payment out of pocket.
