State Health Insurance or Blue Cross?

My parents currently pay for their own health insurance via Blue Cross in Illinois. This is very costly and they could barely afford it. They have been accepted into the state's (IL) health insurance program for low income families. They are planning to switch because the cost of Blue Cross is just too much... What are the major pros and cons of staying with Blue Cross? Are there any bad things I should know about state based health insurance in Illinois? Thanks! Your help is much appreciated...

Will my health insurance go up if I buy a motorcycle?

Lets say I have health insurance through a parent, and I purchase a motorcycle. Will there be any consequence for the health insurance deductions or benefits that we receive through the health insurance company? Also, how could a health insurance company find out about the motorcycle in the first place?
--------------------
No. It is against the law for them to base your rates on activities unless you turn in repeated claims for related injuries. Turn in claims on your motorcycle policy, NOT your health Insurance.

Why is gas, health insurance and taxes so high?

We need to control our borders and make laws that stand and are enforced. Illeagal's need to be sent back to home countries untill they follow the rules and laws.
--------------------
There's little connection between the high gas and insurance prices and illegal immigrants. It's not true that illegal immigrants are driving up health care costs or gas. No basis in fact. Taxes, it's true, are somewhat affected. When you have people that don't contribute (by paying taxes) but use resources/services, this means that rest of us have to pay more. However, the impact is a lot smaller than you'd think. Illegal immigrants, as a group, use fewer resources than citizens. And, offsetting is the fact that many products and services are CHEAPER because of cheap illegal immigrant labor.

Would health insurance cover me?

Me and my family are kind of planning on me going down to Florida to stay with my aunt and uncle for the school year, because I wanted to see what it would be like to study down there. Both my parents are fine with it, but my mom says that if my health insurance doesn't cover down there, I can't. Now my question is: if I go down to Florida, of course my parents have to sign over my aunt and uncle as my legal guardians.. If they do that, can I still be covered by their (my parents) health insurance? All the details you can, please!

Do I need health insurance for 3 days?

I am a recent college grad. My health insurance coverage under my parents plan will end on May 31st. I have a job (!!!!) with immediate health insurance coverage that will begin on June 4th. Should I get a one month short-term plan or are there provisions within the health insurance industry should something happen during this three day period? Or should I just lock myself in my apartment for the three days and take no risks?!!!
--------------------
Only if something happens during the 3 days. If it were me, I'd follow the "lock myself in the apartment" plan. Although that's not an official insurance answer, LOL.

If I get health insurance through my employer, what if any information do they have access to?

I'm assuming they don't have access to every doctor's visit, procedure, etc. Do they have access to any information, like what doctors I'm seeing and how much I'm spending through insurance? (I have Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan if it makes a difference.)
--------------------
Because of the HIPPA privacy laws the employer does not have any access to your private health information.

when i get into life and health insurance can you switch other policies to you?

even your own policies you have with somebody else?
--------------------
Your question is not very clear. But this may help. If someone owns a life insurance policy on you (your dad for example) when you turn 18 he can switch ownership of the policy to you. Is that what you were looking for?

I have pink eye but no health insurance, what should i do?

I want to see a doctor but I don't have any disposable income. I barely get by as it is. My eye is pink and my vision is blurring off and on though. I don't know what I should do ? Should I be worried, will it heal itself or do I need antibiotics?
--------------------
Hard to say, I think it is possible that it could heal itself. I don't know about blurring vision either. Is the eye kind of sore? Does it drain a lot? Do you wake up with it stuck shut because of the dried drainage? I know it sounds gross but these are characteristics of pink eye. I have had a light case that went away by itself but I've had bad cases the did require antibiotic drops. I don't remember having blurred vision but with excess drainage I'm sure that could be likely. I don't think you'll go blind from it but I'm not a doctor either. I would say just watch it and if it seems to get worse and not better over the next day or two then you should go in. If you have a doctor that you've seen before they may be willing to call you in a prescription for some eye drops if you explain that you just can't make it in. Even without insurance I don't think the drops are too pricey; I'd say $20 or less.

If someone without health insurance was riding a bicycle and was hit by a taxi and broke his arm, does the ?

taxi's insurance cover it automatically? and roughly how much money can the person on the bike get for pain and suffering...etc?. thanks
--------------------
1st there has to be a police report to determine fault. If you were breaking any traffic laws, it's your bill. Pain and suffering is determined by doctor's reports and if you attended every appointment and once you pursue pain and suffering, be prepared to be under surveillance and it is difficult to have a judge order pain and suffering for a broken arm. Obviously a broken bone is painful and prescription pain medication manages the suffering part.Warning; a judge will order maximum he is allowed if you are trying to take advantage of an unfortunate situation also is the most difficult to determine. Be prepared that an ad will run in the local newspaper asking for anyone that witnessed this accident to come forth and testify. Good Luck.

how easy is it to get health insurance in california if you are unemployed or self-employed?

I think in nj and ny it is guaranteed through places like ehealthinsurance but what about ca? Can they turn you down for pre-existing conditions? Where can I find out more?
--------------------
If you are self-employed no problem, but if you are unemployed most companies will not accept you. It has nothing to do with being able to afford the premium; it is because most umemployed people are looking for a job and many jobs have health benefits. Yes, you can be turned down depending upon the severity and type of pre-existing condition. You can also be turned down if your height and weight are outside the guidelines or if you have the "wrong" occupation. Your best bet is to visit a local independent agent that works with all the major companies. The agent can find the best plan for your situation and budget and can explain the plans. There is no extra charge using an agent and you'll have a local person to call if you have questions or problems in the future.

Which company provides health insurance for government employees? Can that company deny them care at will?

Do they have benefit caps? Considering that we all pay for their coverage if government employees faced the same problems with insurance the rest of us do would those problems have been corrected before they even existed?
--------------------
Good question and the system doesn't work like people believe it does (especially when Hillary talks about the "same care Congress has" in her plan). There are choices. Here's the link for 2008 so you can see for yourself: http://www.opm.gov/insure/health/ There is no one company that ensures them. Employees are given a "menu" that applies to their paygrade, location, etc. and they offer from HMOs to FFS (Fee For Service--the traditional plan that most people still think of with insurance). I suspect they have caps, but there is no way I'm going to read through every possible plan to find out--plus insurers are notorious for making it hard to find that info--until it's too late. They do have companies with LOW satisfaction scores. For grins, I selected 4 plans for MY zip code and found that some had just over 50% and less than 60% overall plan satisfaction. Such a deal, eh? Looks like a ballpark guess is that the government picks up about 70% of the cost of the plan and the employee about 30%. As with everyone else's plan when they do talk about out-of-pocket max's they always say things like co-pays and some things do NOT count toward the out-of-pocket AND after you hit your max, you still pay the co-pays. I think what we have to remember is that HIGH PROFILE folks in government will get anything they want--even if it's not technically covered I'm sure they can get taken care of. For your poor DMV clerk or something, he's probably as bad off as the cashier at the grocery store. THE FOLLOWING IS FROM 2002 SO IT IS OLD, BUT INTERESTING: "www.tscl.org Ask the Advisor: Congressional Health Care Benefits, the Rolls Royce of Health Plans? Why not scrap Medicare in favor of something better? I refer to the cost-effective health plan enjoyed by all of Congress. I understand it includes prescription drugs. I've asked my Congressman, Joe Hoeffel (D-PA) to spell out what's in his health plan, what he pays and how it is funded. He has ignored my requests. I've heard it referred to as the Rolls Royce health care plan. This seems like a good idea for everybody instead of trying to fix the damn-near broke Medicare.-T.M, Plymouth Meeting, PA From the editor: Members of Congress enjoy excellent health benefits under the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHBP). For 2002, Representative Hoeffel could choose from 11 different health care plans under FEHBP. All plans offer prescription drug benefits. The government (meaning taxpayers like you and me) pays 72% of the average premium but not more than 75%. Your Congressman saw the remaining 25% deducted from his $12,500 monthly paycheck (also paid for by you and me). This is similar to the amount the government pays under Medicare. Under Medicare, the government pays 75% of the Part B premium and the other 25% monthly premium is deducted from your Social Security check (which is much, much less than $12,500 per month). Among the 11 health plans, the federal employee share of monthly premiums ranges from a low of $55.58 per month to a high of $354.08 per month. These premiums compare with Medicare Part A hospital insurance and Medicare Part B doctors' and outpatient services. But, they also include prescription drug coverage. Medicare Part B premiums in 2002 are $54 per month. Most Medicare beneficiaries pay nothing for Medicare Part A, but most supplement Medicare, and pay additional premiums for Medigap policies. The Medicare deductibles in 2002 are $812 for Part A and $100 for Part B. FEHBP deductibles range from nothing for hospital stays to $500. Doctor and outpatient services deductibles range from none to $500. Prescription drug deductibles range from none to $600. The plan with the lowest combination of deductibles is $250; the plan with the highest is $1,150. There is no Medicare Part A hospital co-insurance for the first 60 days. After that Medicare beneficiaries pay $203 per day for the 61st to 90th day in each period and $406 a day for the 91st to 150th day. Hospital inpatient co-insurance in FEHBP ranges from nothing to 35%. Medicare Part B coinsurance is generally about 20%. Under FEHBP the coinsurance ranges from 10% to as much as 35%. FEHBP drug insurance co-insurance varies depending upon whether the prescription is generic, brand name or a non-formulary drug. Copayments start as low as $5 but co-insurance can be as high as 50% depending on the plan and the type of drug. In 2000, the National Bipartisan Commission on the Future of Medicare ended with no agreement on a proposal to reform Medicare along lines similar to the FEHBP plans. The so-called "premium support" model would essentially privatize Medicare leaving the government in the role of negotiating contracts with participating health plans as they do for the FEHBP plans. Senator John Breaux (D-LA) introduced legislation in 2001 to reform Medicare along these lines but it remains in committee. Even under such a system, the biggest problem for Medicare remains the financing. FEHBP plans aren't necessarily that much more cost-efficient. FEHBP costs are rising by double-digit rates as well. Premiums rose in 2001 by an average of 13.3%. The Blue Cross standard option, popular with many retirees, rose by 20% for individual coverage. This increase was on top of a 2000 average increase of 10.5% and an increase of 21.2% in Blue Cross standard option. No matter which system, with increasing numbers of persons becoming eligible and health care costs continuing to climb, Medicare remains as you say, "damn-near broke." To read more about the FEHBP, you can download a free copy of the 2002 Federal Employees Health Benefits guides for working employees as well as retirees online at www.opm.gov/insure/health/index.htm. If you do not have internet access, ask your library for help. March 2002" http://www.tscl.org/NewContent/101421.as…

If I have bcbs of FL health insurance will I be able to have a gastric bypass or a lapband?

I know that bcbls of Florida does not cover the gastric bypass surgery anymore, but is it still possible to make an appeal of anykind to have it done anyway. Please help.
--------------------
You can do an appeal. See if your doctor would write a letter of medical necessity for it. It would help your case. Most Health insurance companies will not cover that type of surgery, although some might if you can supply some kind of proof of the medical necessity

Should smokers, heavy drinkers and overweight people be required to pay more for health insurance?

It seems unfair to me that everybody pays the same price. The healthy subsidize the slobs who require more long term care because of their habits and addictions.

Why should patients be treated without health insurance?

I am doing some research for this question for my Bioethics class. As a future physician, I strongly support this statement and need some more feedback universally.
--------------------
Because not everyone can afford to have health insurance. Medicaid on applies to the very poor... not to the people that are barley getting by. Patients without insurance are people too, and have family and friends that love them very much. Not to long ago, I was without insurance. I was a 19 year old college student, my mom got laid off. I lost my insurance and I was too old to get Medicaid. I went 4 years without insurance. I was working on my under graduate degree, and then went for my Masters. I was working a job that did not offer health insurance (I was working 40+ hours a week), but needed to stay there since they work around my schedule. I went to health clinics when I was sick and saved up enough money to pay for my gyno visits as well as my dental visit (which I found a health clinic that was reasonable in price and took people with no insurance). I finally got a new job, but they did not offer health insurance right away. I was there for over a year before I got health insurance. It is hard finding a job that offers health insurance. Especially when you are young. There are so many jobs that do not offer it to their employees for one reason or another. Health insurance on your own is so expensive that it is sometimes better to take a chance and go to the doctor and pay out of pocket when needed. I wish United States will follow the lead of Canada and Europe and offer Health insurance to all the citizens.

How much does Bush pay for health insurance?

I wonder how much of his income he has to set aside to keep up with the monthly payments.
--------------------
He doesn't. Under Federal law the United States Navy Medical Department is the single manager of health care for the President, Vice President, the Senate and Members of the House of Representatives. All receive free medical care. If the President needs hospitalization it is provided at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. The sole exception to the system in my lifetime was President Dwight David Eisenhower. He was treated at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. because he was a retired general and already rated care there. If the President had signed the latest version of the States Childrens Health Insurance Program bill, it would have given free health care to the children of parents earning up to $80,000 a year without any of those parents paying a dime of premiums.

Where can I get cheap travelers health insurance coverage?

I'm traveling through Nicaragua for 3 months. What is the average I can expect to pay for this trip?
--------------------
I have bought through Travel Insured International. I'm not pushing that company, it is just the only one I have experience with. I paid a couple hundred dollars for a 1 month trip- they have several levels of plans from basic to more complete. I think I had the basic one. Well worth it for the medical evacuation coverage, etc (that is if you have to be transported back home for medical treatment). Also covers the usual trip interruption and things like that.

How can you get prescribed to Adderall for cheap without having health insurance? I'm soo ADD.?

I start school in June and I've been off of my medication (adderall) ever since I graduated High School. I want to be back on it for when I start college in June. Does anyone know how to get prescribed to it for cheap without having health insurance?
--------------------
You go to the Multicare. There has to be one in your area. It's a flat rate $50 to see the doctor. You tell them your situation and then it's 50/50 if they'll write you an Rx. Psychiatrists generally are the ones who more commonly write those Rxs. Explain your situation to the doctor and if you have proof that you've had the Rx in the past you should be Ok. Go to the pharmacy where you got it filled and ask them for a history. They will print it up for you and you can take it to the doc.

Is theTax on Health Insurance the back door in for Euthanizing Older retired Workers?

So an older retired worker can afford really good health Ins., so what , he payed or is paying for it, now you raise his taxes so every thing becomes too expensive and he chinces on health insurance and care and goes to a gov't. assisted health care facility with limits as to care and he dies. Aren't You politicians wonderful?
--------------------
Only people that believe all the Republican lies think this is true. The Cons are misleading the American people in an attempt to salvage their party and regain control of the government. It's all about politics and is far from the truth.

If you get disability do you lose your health insurance?

I think you can keep your insurance. Disability is intended to cover your cost of living, not pay for medical care. They are two different entities. But, it never hurts to ask them!

Which are the best health insurance companies in Australia for dental claims?

Is it worth joining a health insurance scheme for dental work and is there a company that will allow dental coverage only without paying for hospital or medical benefits?
--------------------
According to my receptionist who handles the HICAPS, the best dental plans are R & T (transport union), or Teachers' Federation. For either of these you need to have a family member who is in that industry. Next best is NRMA for anyone to join. Worst at present is NIB. Whether it's worth joining is a tricky question - it depends on what your current needs are, and what might happen in the future. If you have good teeth with no holes, then you would only need cover for perhaps braces and wisdom teeth. Might be better just saving up the money after you consider the amount you would have to pay in (12 months qualifying period), and the amount of rebate you would get back. Or take out a loan if either of these treatments are necessary. If you've had lots of cavities, then you'll probably benefit from cover because you'll always have something that needs maintenance/repair. Similarly if you're a parent with kids and they might need treatment. The health funds only bundle dental with hospital because they make most of their profits from the hospital cover. The dental/chiropractic/sports/ ... cover is an add-on. Consider going to a dentist for a check-up and standard diagnostic Xrays (bitewings) plus an OPG Xray for wisdom teeth before you make a decision. Ask him/her their opinion.

Where can I find basic and cheap health insurance?

I am a 25 year old part time college student looking for very basic and cheap health insurance. I had prior insurance under my father's plan but was dropped when I turned 25. Legally I can elect COBRA continuation coverage but the monthly cost is above what I can afford. I am looking for cheap insurance that would cover doctor visits and prescriptions. I am not very knowledgeable about any of this; any advice would be greatly appreciated.
--------------------
sorry buddy, I do not believe there is such an animal. I think "cheap health insurance" is about as extinct as dinosaurs. Right now I am paying almost $1000 per month for a family of 5 (actually 4 because my employer supposedly pays mine). The worst part is that the stupid plan isn't worth crap. it just doesn't pay for stuff like I should. I mean d@mnit if I pay 12000/year, I would expect to be able to get something out of that plan, but there are so many loopholes and stuff that I end up paying that and a bunch on top of it. I could almost buy a car for that much money every year... Insurance companies are the biggest fraud ever passed unto the naive americans. Insurance companies are the DEVIL. We should get rid of all forms of insurance and promote personal responsibility. Yeah, like it used to be you know. You go to the doctor and pay for the services period. If doctors will have to deal directly with real people, they won't be able to charge the insane amounts they charge, because they'll have to look you in the eye. Only a couple of months ago I hurt myself with an axe. It really wasn't much. They had to do an xray and 6 stitches. and that cost me almost $800. HELLO? 6 freegin stitches and an xray should not cost that much.
