should I get my own health insurance?

Right now I don't have any health insurance but I'm considering paying it out of my own pocket. Is this wise?
--------------------
Health insurance is critical for protecting both your health and your wallet. The cost of even basic health care can be very expensive. The average cost of a day in a California hospital is more the $9,000. A burst appendix can cost over $45,000. A health insurance policy limits your exposure. And the cost can be less than you think. The cost depends in part on how much risk you're willing to take in the form of deductibles and co-insurance (the percent of a claim you pay before the carrier pays 100%). If you take on more of the risk, your monthly premium will be lower. Shift the risk to the carrier in the form of a lower deductible and they'll charge more. But right now you're on the hook for 100% of the cost, so a high deductible might make sense for you. In California you can research the cost of coverage at http://www.InsuranceNeighborhood.com . You can also find a local agent to help you through the jargon on their site. A local agent can help you not only find the right plan, but help you with any problems that arrive once you have the coverage. Outside of California you can find local agents through their national trade association. The site is http://www.NAHU.org. Just click on the "Customer Resources" tab and then on the "Find an Agent" link. Hope this helps.

Health Insurance?

I've recently changed jobs. The job that I have right now doesn't offer insurance at the moment. While looking for affordable health insurance I got injured playing soccer (I was diagnosed with torn ACL). Any idea what shoud I do now? According to the doctor the surgery can wait few months. Should I hide my injury from the insurance company and get the insurance, then after some time fix my knee etc? Please help.
--------------------
Do not listen to the other Bozos answering your question. You really only have one or two real options due to your diagnosis and pre-existing condition. You will not be able to hide your injury from any insurance company now that you have had a diagnosis by a doctor while previously covered by insurance....they all report to the MIB (Medical Information Bureau) and you will be discovered sooner or later and your claim will be denied. If they did pay any claims you will be required by law to pay them back in full. Option # 1) Get a new job with "Group" coverage. Group is guaranteed issue and if you have had no break in coverage for more than 31 days (in most states) the one year pre-existing clause is eliminated and you should be covered immediately. Option # 2) Have your current employer (if they do not offer coverage) pay you as a 1099 self employed individual. In most states an individual that is self employed may apply for a "Group of 1" guaranteed issue health plan. If you have gone past your 31 days you may be accepted for the insurance but given a 1 year waiting period for pre-ex. conditions. Did your other job offer you COBRA? If you don't know, ask your old employer. If they did offer it, you have 63 days to accept it and assume the coverage....in which case your injury (if incurred in the 63 day window) would be covered.

Health insurance?

I left my job about a couple of months back.Im actively looking for a job and hoping to land something by next month.Im eligible for COBRA benefits through my former employment.I still have time to elect or waive the COBRA coverage.Im not sure whether I should elect it.I definitely don't have any planned doc/hospital visit in the near future,so I need insurance only for unexpected events.I have time until Aug first week to make the election.I might get insured through my new employer before or roughly around the first half of August but it would be about 4 months since I lost coverage from my previous insurance plan if I do not elect COBRA.I don't know if that has any significance and I don't know what exactly is the HIPAA rights.I read somewhere that a break in health insurance for more than 63 days could mean losing HIPAA rights and also have some other consequences like pre-exclusion.My question is what are the pros and mainly the cons of electing or waiving COBRA benefits?
--------------------
You need to take the Cobra. If you don't, and during your uninsured time you develope a problem that will remain with you the rest of your life (diabetes, cancer, fibromyalgia, kidney issues, etc), a new insurer can exclude any medical treatment related to that condition as "pre-existing". Uninsured medical issues are the number one reason why middle class people become poor people.

Can his family help him to get new insulin pump with their health insurance?

My friend's insulin pump broke. He needs a new one. it cost $7,000.00. He doesn't have health insurance.
--------------------
Your friend cannot receive benefits of his family's health insurance if he is not covered by their policy. He should really look into getting state insurance (Medicaid) if he is eligible. I'm not sure if they would help pay for an insulin pump, but they might cover office visits and other expenses associated with care of a diabetic.

Do gay couples get shared health insurance?

If a gay couple needed health insurance, would they each have to be covered individually or can they get a family type coverage? Does it depend on the state? I need another job, with health benefits, and I'm just wondering if I can cover both my girlfriend and I with it once we move in together.
--------------------
Mostly it depends upon the employing agency. But if your employer does offer health insurance for partners, be warned that the federal government views it as additional income, and you will be taxed at a higher rate federally. State taxes - depends on state tax law, but I don't know of any state where those benefits offered would not consider it as additional income.

Anyone have suggestions on dropping out of employer health plan and getting your own insurance?

Health insurance is so expensive, and we rarely use it. I am thinking about taking out my own high-deductible policy for catastrophic coverage and paying everything out of pocket. Has anyone tried this? Any recommendations for companies that offer high-deductible policies for catastrophic coverage?
--------------------
I would never suggest to not elect group coverage. Group coverage is cheaper because you are paying the group rate. An individual policy is usually a lot more expensive and your rates can increase every year. You can not afford to not have insurance. What would happen if you had a major medical claim. You can not work your way out of a claim for hundreds of thousands of dollars to some claims that are one million dollars. I decided to quit my "big boy" job 3 years a go. I did purchase a individual policy and my premiums have increased every year by at least 15%. I am now paying $174 a month for health and rx coverage (no dental and vision). If you are still thinking about making such a bold move, speak to an insurance advisor.

How fast can you receive a health insurance in Ohio?

A health insurance that is pretty cheap and good In Dayton, Ohio??????
--------------------
As fast as you can write a check for the coverage. However, it won't cover pre-existing conditions so if you're looking for coverage to cover an illness or injury or pregnancy that you already have, you're not going to have coverage for it anyway. Here's a website you can check rates for Ohio medical carriers.

I need to get my tonsils removed but I have not health insurance?

My tonsils are killing me. It hurts to do pretty much everything. I want to get them removed but there is only one problem. I have no health insurance and neither do my parents. Can anyone offer some advice on how to go about getting them removed. I looked up the average price of a surgery and it runs about $3000. I don't have that kinda of money just lying around. Please help!!!

Check into public hospitals. This happened to my cousin, with no insurance, and he got his out with no fee whatsoever. He did have to wait a few months, but it worked. Public hospitals here have health plans for people with no insurance. Once you qualify, you don't pay anything, except for prescriptions, nothing for procedures or office visits. Also find out if the county where you live has some kind of assistance. Sometimes teaching hospitals will help also. Care Credit is a credit card company for health needs.

How has your experience been with Blue Cross Blue Sheild Individual Health Insurance?

My current employer does not offer Health Insurance so I'm looking at different companies
--------------------
I have BCBS individual coverage. Like any health insurance contract you need to understand what is and is not covered. Once you understand that you can balance the two sides of the equation, Cost vs. Policy Benefits. The BCBS policy does not include the "bells and whistles" which makes it more affordable.

I was in an auto accident and now have medical bills. My health insurance paid them but doesn't the auto pay?

I have copies of explanation of benefits where my health insurance paid my medical bills from an auto accident. I live in the state of Missouri. Doesn't the auto insurance company still suppose to pay you the full amount of the bills?
--------------------
The health insurance company can "go after" your auto insurance company for reimbursement of any bills that they paid, if you purchased PIP or Medical payments coverage, up to your auto policy limit. YOU can't collect under both policies. Collecting under your HEALTH insurance automatically assigns them the right of "subrogation" - going after the other policy (either yours or the guy that caused the accident) for reimbursement.

People talk about immigrants getting free health insurance, how can I a low income citizen get some info?

I am a low income citizen and I have always payed cash to go to the doctor. I am making as much as a person can in my field without going to college, but my job does not offer health insurance. How can I get information on free health visits. The last time I called the local health department they said they only help out with parenthood stuff. Besides needing some good pain killers for cramps that I cant afford because my tubes are tied. Especially what my doctor prescribed to me, how can I get more info. on all this free stuff. I live in Columbia SC.
--------------------
You aren't going to get free painkillers, that's for sure. It's based on your income. If you make too much money to qualify for your county's department of social services free clinic, then you have to pay out of pocket like a lot of people do. You have to contact them and find out.

(2 pts) A random sample of 2000 workers in a particular city found 1000 workers who had full health insurance?

(2 pts) A random sample of 2000 workers in a particular city found 1000 workers who had full health insurance coverage. Find a 95% confidence interval for the true percent of workers in this city who have full health insurance coverage.
--------------------
ANSWER: 95% Resulting Confidence Interval for 'true mean': = [0.478, 0.522] Why??? POPULATION PROPORTION, CONFIDENCE INTERVAL, NORMAL DISTRIBUTION n = Number of samples 2000 Number of Successes 1000 p = POPULATION PROPORTION 0.5 significant digits 3 Confidence Level 95 "Look-up" Table 'z-critical value' 1.960 from Excel function: NORMSINV(probability) Returns the inverse of the standard normal cumulative distribution. The distribution has a mean of zero, a standard deviation of one and is symmetrical. 95% Resulting Confidence Interval for 'true mean': p +/- (z critical value) * SQRT[p * (1 - p)/n] = 0.5 +/- 1.96 * SQRT[0.5 * (1 - 0.5)/2000] = [0.478, 0.522]

does my company still pay into my health insurance benefits if they furloughed me? ?

My company put all employees on mandatory furlough for month of Dec. and Jan. and I don't know if I can apply for unemployment benefits or if I still have health insurance coverage for myself and family.

You can apply for unemployment. The health benefits question should be directed to your employer.

can you suggest a good, affordable health insurance plan?

I am an adjunct instructor at two colleges in Michigan. Neither institution offers health insurance for adjunct instructors. For the last three years I have been getting health Insurance through a postdoctoral fellowship. Now this fellowship has come to an end, and I am in desperate straits. I have heart problems and I need specials medicationss for depression and attention deficit disorder. What do I do?
--------------------
No one can suggest a good, affordable health insurnace plan for someone with heart problems, depression, ADD, and two jobs. There are government-funded programs that are free or affordable, but you make too much to qualify. There are affordable programs that insurance companies sell voluntarily, but they will refuse to sell you one because you have heart problems, depression, ADD, and two jobs. Therefore, you will have to get unaffordable guaranteed-issue coverage, such as a HIPAA plan or insurance from a managed risk pool.

If you don't want to buy health insurance and you pay the Gov. fine does that make you insured?

Obama states that it will be mandatory that everyone buys health insurance. This would be approx. $350 a month/$4200 a year. From what I've read, and I could be mistaken, the penalty for not buying the insurance would be $750. So if you pay the penalty does that mean that you are now insured?

Would you recommend Norwich Union private Health / Medical insurance?

Please can anyone give me their opinions on this health insurance provider... I am not sure whether to change from BUPA to Norwich Union. The covers seem to offer pretty much the same things though Norwich Union is £45 cheaper per month. I just wondered if anyone had any good or bad stories or personal experiences they'd like to share about either company?
--------------------
Norwich Union are a reputable company - which to my knowledge do not own any hospitals direct where as BUPA do. I have always felt that BUPA tended to give a gold plated service - for which you pay for - as well as having to fund the cost of their hospital , doctors and staff etc. whereas NU are more about covering actual costs of cover and weigh up the risks carefully on the policy side. You really have to look at the small print of the policies that are offered and the true level of cover and costs covered regarding and illness or condition. Its always a tricky one with health cover as all companies can be difficult over any condition believed to have been present before a policy start date but I don't think NU are any worse than anyone else in this field. Another to consider is Standard Life - which I think compares similarly to Norwich Union.

You will pay for Sex offender's health insurance if passed, did you know that?

Majority of sex offenders who raped children couldn't find job and they don't have health insurance. If the bill passed, they will be covered. Do you want their health get better to rape children again? Better think about who they are covering. Their are so many sex offenders in this country and they are in that number uninsured.

Along with all those others who can not get insurance. Like type one diabetics, those with juvenile onset arthritis and the like. I guess in order to stop paedophiles getting healthcare, we should accept that loads of others will get screwed as well. I am always amazed how many Americans seem not to be aware about the real healthcare issues relying instead on FOX and other sources to spread lies about the healthcare system of the USA and those abroad. I mean, if healthcare in nations with universal coverage is so bad, why do they keep it? Obama wants to make insurance more available to all and change the system so that it gives the American people value for money [1]. He also wants change so that the insurance companies find it harder to get out of paying for treatment. The system he is proposing looks similar to that which works in Taiwan where private companies are involved in providing healthcare [2]. Obama campaigned on reforming the healthcare system. He said he wanted to make insurance more available and he was elected by the American people to do this [3]. FACT - the US has higher death rates for kids both for kids aged under one and those under five than western European countries with universal health coverage [4,5]. FACT – American insurance companies push up prices and work to stop paying out claims on those they cover [6]. FACT - the USA spends more on healthcare PER PERSON than any other nation on the planet [7]. That means that a dead American four year old would have had a better chance of life if they were born in any western nation with universal health coverage. If you do not like the policies that Obama was elected to bring in, he can always be voted out of office in 2012. But if you disagree with the facts, please let me know. I am always willing to learn, but please provide proof. None of those who disagree with me have been able to do that so far.
