How does health insurance work?

Can someone please explain to me how health insurance works. I'm 18 and I know i'm supposed to know how it works but I dont. I'm getting older and these are things I need to know. If you could explain how it works with having a job, why people cant get it, etc... I want to know any and everything you can tell me. Thanx 10 pts best answer.
--------------------
There are many kinds of health insurance, so this is a complex question. And there are several ways you get it as well. Types: The major types are 1. a HMO (health maintenance organization--Kaiser is the prototype). In this type of insurance you must use all the facilities that ascribe to the HMO. To go out side with out prior approval is to risk having to pay for it all. This is generally the cheapest form of insurance. 2. The PPO (preferred provider org); a bit more $. You have to use all the services that are in the PPO network; but its may be more widespread than the HMO. Again, to use a non PPO provider increases the amount you have to pay out of pocket. 3. Open networks--the most $$. You go where you want, when you want. There are several of these out there with various names. Boutique medicine is medicine you pay for entirely. Some terms: DEDUCTIBLE-this is the amount of $ you must pay before the insurance kicks in. Like car insurance. The higher the deductible, the cheaper the insurance. CO-PAY-this is the amount of $ that you are reasonable for and it depends on each charge. To have a Dr's visit you might have a co-pay of $10; which is due at to the Dr at the time of the visit. LIMITS--the amount at which your insurance ceases coverage (say 1 million). This is important in catastophic ilness or trauma. INCLUDED/EXCLUDED--procedures that are covered or not (such as maternity care or ER visits). ER visits often have their own set of rules & a higher co-pay. PREMIUM--how much the insurance actually costs yearly/monthly. (In addition to other fees). % COVERED--you insurance may only cover, say 80% of out patient testing--you pay the other 20% (in addition to co-pay etc). How to get insurance? The cheapest is a group plan; which is what employers offer. The group usually negotiates cheaper costs. The employer pays part of the premium. Individual coverage is what a person gets on his own because his employer doesn't cover insurance. This can be $$$$. You must pay everything. You can still elect for a HMO, PPO etc but you pay the full premium. So what are all the charges summarized? 1. The Premium 2. the Co-pay 3. the deductible, and 4. the non-covered %. You must select a policy that affords the best coverage to you as you think you will use it. Luckily at your age, health insurance is cheap! I hope this brief intro helped!!!!

How Many People Had Their Health Insurance Premiums Go Down Since ObamaCare?

The personal health insurance I've had for many years always went up a little bit every year in January. This year, my premium went up in January, as always, then it went up again in March when ObamaCare was passed, it went up again 2 months ago and AGAIN this month. I thought Obama was going to protect us from crazy rate increases. Is it just me, or did others have their health insurance go up a lot this year?
--------------------
thanks to 0bama mine went up so i terminated the policy

What i would like to know is how do you get health insurance what are some few basics about it and what it does do for you in the future? I would like to find out this info from you in not very long explanation. Thank you!
--------------------
Quite simple.. they work from the money got from you people.. all health insurance company need to collect money from their policy holders.. every month policy holders have to pay some amount as insurance.. from our money they pay for our illness.. they never want to print up more..

How many people do you know that had their health insurance canceled simply because they made a claim?

I must have seen 50 posts on YA today with pro Obama people saying that insurance companies cancel people for just for making a claim. Has this ever happened to you or anyone you know? Or is this just the Liberals talking point to try to justify the government taking over health care?
--------------------
None. And since most health insurance is through work and therefore a group plan......it can't be canceled by a single claim.

If I pay for more than one health insurance, is it possible to use them all to pay off a health bill?

I have health insurance through multiple companies. If one only pays so much and so does other, shouldn't I be able to combine them and pay off a bill?
--------------------
Coordination of Benefits is the concept that allows you to use multiple insurance plans to pay parts of a bill. Generally, claims are billed to your primary insurance company and that remaining amount is then billed to the secondary insurance company. The total amount paid can not exceed 100% of the cost. You may still be responsible for an amount after both companies have paid their part. There can be quite a few restrictions regarding COB (Coordination of Benefits), so contacting both companies can help to clarify the situation. Typically you can call and speak to a representative and mention Coordination of Benefits, and they should be able to provide you with more details.

How can I qualify for health insurance?

I am married, 18 years old and I am most likely pregnant (I am 2 weeks late and have had a positive home pregnancy test). I have no health insurance, and neither I nor my husband has a job and we have no income. We live in Tennessee. I am wondering if I qualify for health insurance, even if I have no income?
--------------------
Once you're already pregnant, no private health insurance company will sell you a policy. No idea how you live, with neither of you working, but you'd most likely qualify for welfare health insurance - Medicaid. If you live with one of your parents, and they actually support you, though, then their income "counts" as eligibility, and you might not qualify for welfare. Don't forget to explore your birthing options - the most expensive method is also the most dangerous, for both mother and child. Most popular, too, here in the USA.

When you are in the reserves do you receive health insurance?

I am personally enslisting in the Navy Reserves, but in general are you given any kind of health insurance, or is it only if you're deployed? Thanks.
--------------------
There are provisions for Reservists to buy into TRICARE, which is the 'heath insurance' plan that covers military folks away from military hospitals. You have to pay a premium, however. Premiums run anywhere from $81.00-$767.41/month and is based upon whether or not you are covering only yourself and whether or not you have a family. More info is available on the link that I am adding to my source field.

Can an employer charge different rates for the same health insurance based on the employee's income?

My employer is instituting a progressive health insurance rate plan. The more money you make, the more you pay for the same benefit. Is this legal?
--------------------
I would think so. They don't have to pay any of your insurance. It makes sense to charge based on the person's ability to pay. Sounds like a reasonable system to me!

Is it worth for me to get health insurance?

I am 35 years old, healthy, have not been sick for years. I live pay check to pay check. I could budget and buy the minimum health insurance, but friends have told me it's a waste of money if I don't health issues. If an emergency happens, rarely would the minimum coverage cover anything at all. You're more screw if you don't have any savings or financial assects. If so, is it safer to rely on medical?
--------------------
I'm not sure what state you live in - in MA you have to have insurance or they will withhold your tax exemption credit - but if you are living paycheck to paycheck, check with social services and see what kinds of insurance they have that you can afford. You may qualify for semi-free care. Everyone should have medical insurance - there are too many ways to get yourself hurt (not your own fault) out there. Please find out what your local city or state government has to offer - there is no shame is getting something your taxes have already paid for. Hope this helps. =) And stay well.

How is the health care insurance law NOT socialism?

How is the health care bill NOT socialism If socialism is the redistribution of wealth from those who have more to those have less. The rich are getting taxed to give money to the poor to buy health insurance. Thanks.
--------------------
Because the tea-baggers can decided ANYTHING is socialism. Then as soon as Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin facebook or twitter that they also believe it's socialism then the rest of the tea-baggers feel the same.

How hard is the Licencing test for Life and Health Insurance?

My husband is studying to past the test for Life and Health Insurance. In the practice tests he is not quite getting the score he will need to pass the test. Does anyone know or have recent experience? Did you feel that the test was hard or easier then the practice tests you were given? He is taking the test in Utah if there is anyone familiar with that test.
--------------------
When I took the test about 9 months ago (in Oklahoma), I found the difficulty of the practice tests to be very similar to the actual test. The hardest part of the actual test was the stress of being timed and having to take it on the computer. That might not be difficult for your husband but I am used to pen and paper tests. I would suggest he keep taking the practice tests until he gets the desired score. I know a couple people who failed the test the first time around. They all said they would have probably passed the first time had they taken more practice tests. I hope this helps!

Can any body tell me about health insurance information?

I need a very good health insurance policies. I am conscious about my health and want to know about discount of health insurance.

Go talk to a local agent. Insurance is run on a state by state basis, and any online place is LIKELY not to have correct information for your state.

can you force a health insurance company to keep you insured?

I am a student going on 25, and I have health insurance through my parents via their employers. At 25 my health insurance company will drop me. If i have a chronic illness that requires medication to control and regular check ups can I keep my health insurance from dropping me? If so how would I do that?
--------------------
No, you can not force the insurer to allow you to keep your current coverage at the current premium. (If it were that easy, we wouldn't have so many uninsured people.) There is a possibility that you could be eligible for COBRA or a conversion plan. You can inquire with your insurer as to whether you'd be eligible for either of those types of policies. However, its important to keep in mind that either option will be very expensive. And a conversion policy wouldn't necessarily have the same benefit level you currently have - may have different deductibles, coinsurance, copays, etc. (A COBRA policy would keep you at the same level of benefits, but you'd be paying 100% of the premium + an administrative fee.) If you're not eligible for COBRA or a conversion policy (or can't afford the premiums), your options are more limited. You can try applying for a private policy, but with a chronic illness requiring medication and regular checkups you might get turned down. The best, most relatively affordable option for you at this point would be to find a job that offers insurance benefits. Your employer's policy can't turn you down because of your illness. (Yes, I know you said you're a student. However, you wouldn't be the first person to have to delay her education and/or drop to part time due to financial/insurance issues.) Or else be prepared to pay for your medicines and doctor visits out of pocket, of course.

Is the health insurance that I recieve from my employer a tax deduction?

Can I deduct the cost of my health insurance that I pay for and receive through my employer.
--------------------
Usually the medical insurance through your employer is paid with pre tax dollars, meaning that they are tax free. In this case you can not deduct them. If they are paid with after tax dollars you can. If yo look on your pay stub the pretax items are usually have a star by them. Is it worthwhile for both me and spouse to purchase family coverage health insurance?

I currently have family coverage health insurance through my employer that takes care of me, my spouse, and my infant son. It is about $160/month and has excellent benefits. Now my husband is eligible to buy health insurance through his employer. He could either get single coverage for $25/week for a plan with a $250 deductible, or $21/week for a plan with a $750 deductible. Or he could get family coverage at either $61/week for the lower deductible or $50/week for the higher deductible. The office visit copay is slightly higher with the higher deductible plan. Or he can decline coverage altogether. There is NO WAY I will be canceling our family coverage through my employer. So, is it worth for my spouse to buy dual coverage through his employer? If so, what considerations should we make when deciding to purchase either single or family, and deciding whether to do the lower or higher deductible?
--------------------
Personally, I don't believe you need BOTH insurance coverages. You said yourself, your plan has excellent benefits. And if you're only paying $160 a month, that's an excellent rate. Your husband should decline coverage with his employer. Keep in mind, should something ever happened with your job or your coverage, you can always pick up insurance through your husband's job at that time.

Regarding universal health insurance for all Americans, would Medicare and Medicaid be expanded?

Those 2 government run health insurance programs have been in existence since the 1960's,and,each state has different ways of managing them. One way they get managed is that when all us working Americans get a paycheck, there's always a certain amount that's a payroll deduction listed on our paystubs. It's the same with Social Security. If a new government health insurance program comes into existence, what would it be called and how would it be paid for? Would it be an expansion of Medicare and Medicaid?
--------------------
From what I've been hearing about Congress's progress, it appears that if the government takes over, they would cut back on the medicare for older Americans. In their minds, the money should be spent on health care for the younger generation since the older ones will die off soon enough anyway. That's what is done in most of the foreign countries that have this type of government run health program. They will pay for the new program by raising taxes. They are already talking about a surcharge on the 'rich' to start and since that won't be enough, the taxes will trickle down to everyone.

How many people die every year without health insurance because they bought booze, cigs, rims instead of ins.?

I know a couple who eat out every meal, every single meal, but can't afford health insurance & want you to provide it for them. How many people don't have insurance because it is not a priority to them? I work in the hood & see the frivolous spending by many people. Baby in the front yard with dirty crappy clothes and no shoes but daddy's cutlass has a five thousand dollar set of rims. Just trying to understand the entitlement mentality.

Lack of insurance does not kill people, lack of personal responsibility does!!! Libs can't comprehend that FACT!!!!

Is it possible to have health insurance coverage in 2 different states?

For instance if you go to school in one state but live in another is it can you have health insurance coverage for both states? It seems like it would be more convenient if I suffered an injury and could be treated in one state or the other at the time.
--------------------
Each health insurance is different, but most will cover you if you are going to school in one state and live in another. The best thing would be to check with your health insurance company and explain the situation to them. Many insurance companies cover more than one state too. Question them on what they will cover and where you would have to go to get treatment. Ask them for a written policy that tells you their guidelines and the facilities that they cover and if there are any states they won't cover. If the insurance company doesn't cover what you need then shop around; find one that is more flexible. Hope that that helps.

Where can I find cheaper health insurance?

I currently pay $933.00 every three months for health insurance. Are there cheaper alternatives to this? Thank you in advance.
--------------------
There's no way to answer your question, based on the information you've given. Does that cover you, you and your spouse, you and three kids, you and your entire family? What are the ages of everyone covered? In what area do you live? What's your deductible and the details of your plan? Does anyone use tobacco, or have any pre-existing conditions? These are all important factors. You'll have to give more info if you want some real advice.

How do I know if Health Insurance Premiums are "pre" or "post" tax earnings on W2's?

I already know that Health Insurance Premiums can be tax deductible. It depends if the premium is taken out of taxed or nontaxed moeny(earnings). I'm just not sure how to tell the difference when looking at my W2's. Please help and thanks.
--------------------
Health insurance premiums that YOU pay and not your employer will be in Box 12, Letter "D". If there is a difference between Line One and Line three [or five], subtract letter "D" in Box 12 from Line 3. You should get Line One to the penny. If you do, your health insurance premiums are not being taxed and you can not deduct the premiums. If it does not come out exactly correct, go to your payroll and point this out to them. You may have had to chip in a little for the premiums. You may be able to deduct that, subject to the 7.5% of your adjusted gross income that is subtracted from your health insurance, medical expenses, doctor visits, X-rays and the like.

We are itemizing our medical expenses for 2007, can we prepay our health insurance premiums for 2008?

We are itemizing our medical expenses for 2007 due to exceeding the 7.5% of AGI for medical expenses. Can we prepay my wife's individual health insurance premiums for 2008, so that I get credit for them in 2007? The 12 month amount would be ~$1300 and will be paid for with aftertax dollars. We should not be itemizing next year. Thanks.
--------------------
The information in IRS Pub 502 Medical and Dental Expenses disagrees with the previous answers given: ******************** Future Medical Care Generally, you cannot include in medical expenses current payments for medical care (including medical insurance) to be provided substantially beyond the end of the year. This rule does not apply in situations where the future care is purchased in connection with obtaining lifetime care or long-term care of the type described at Lifetime Care—Advance Payments or Long-Term Care, earlier under What Medical Expenses Are Includible. **************************************… The above would indicate that you cannot prepay for an entire year and deduct it the previous year. This rule is consistent with the rule that businesses, even with accrual accounting, cannot deduct prepaid insurance of any kind.

What happens if i lie when i apply for my health insurance?

I recently got a new job which provides health insurance... but the problem is that my son around 12 years ago had cancer, he was treated and cured in another country several years ago. If i wanted him to be covered i believe my insurance payment will go up, If i lie and say that no one in the family has had cancer would it matter?
--------------------
Sometimes they fire people if their health condition (or a family member's health condition) or the insured's age raises the premiums for the company. They will think of other reasons to fire you so that it can't be traced to discrimination, but it can happen. I believe it happened to me. I had cancer and was in treatment with an insurance from a second job. I didn't mention the cancer. When I finally got on fulltime with benefits, the administator said to me (privately) "why didn't you tell us you had cancer when we hired you?"....we were alone and I can't prove they fired me for that, but I KNOW. And I have seen it happen where people got fired after having knee surgery and coming back, etc. It raises the premium rates for the company and they don't like that. (I am in remission by the way and have only cost them so much as one surgeon's doctor visit and one chemo checkup doctor visit (for blood work)..) If they find out, then it could be denied or insurance fraud... It is your decision to make...You might want to watch the Michael Moore movie "Sicko" to help you decide what to do... P.S. sometimes there are sort of health care "bureaus" like credit bureaus that insurance companies can find out past medical histories on people....like credit bureaus...I don't know if they are still legal after HIPPA health privacy laws were passed a few years back..
