Hi Trinity, I am a Reference Librarian. It will take me a few minutes to research your question. I apologize, my computer has crashed. I am unable to pull the article for you. I can tell you that it is in the March 2008 issue of Consumer Reports Magazine that you should be able to find at your local bookstore, or library. If you contact your library they may be able to email it you. Or if you want a faster answer, I suggest you log on to www.askusnow.com; this is a live chat with a librarian. Good luck with your search. K

Health Insurance?

Can someone reccomend some good affordable health insurance policies for people who's work place does not have health insurance yet. I'm looking for something with good coverage that wont cost me an arm and a leg. Here is a list of things i want on this coverage in order of priority: 1.Mental Health Coverage (dont refer state and government run things because i fall through the cracks on their rules) 2.Dental (i love and want to keep me teeth) 3.Doctor visits (i dont go to the doc much even when i am sick)
--------------------
I know Costco sells good quality health insurance for pretty cheap. Most health care plans don't cover dental, you have to get a separate policy for that.

Health Insurance?

I am 19 yrs old. I need to get my own health insurance and everything seems so expensive. Does anybody know of a good company with low rates that you can refer. Thanks!
--------------------
Go to a local agent, DO NOT try to do this yourself. It's too easy to get scammed on fake policies, or "plans" that are not insurance. If you want low/no deductible (ie, insurance pays from the start, if you go to the doctor), it's GOING to cost you $200 a month. If you only want it if something goes really, really wrong - like you break your ankle and need surgery, and are willing to pay the first $4,000 out of pocket, you can get it for $100 a month. If someone is offering you something that's cheaper than that, it's either NOT insurance, or it's fake.

Where can I get health insurance for people with LOW income in ILLINOIS?

my mother is sick (possibly dying) but refuses to get tests done as she has no medical insurance...$100 would be too much....is it possible to get health insurance for less than that, monthly?
--------------------
Sure, there's Medicaid and Medicare, if she's over 65. That's it. No one else will write a private policy on her, while she's got an undiagnosed medical condition. Why don't you and some family members chip in, to pay for her testing?

Are you enjoying a nice cold beer in celebration of the stalling of the unconstitutional health insurance bill?

As an independent person who has paid all my health care costs over the last 11 years on time, and with no insurance, I'm celebrating the little time I have left before democrats force me into a fight with the IRS over their unconstitutional mandate to purchase insurance!
--------------------
No, watching Keith Olbermann crying over Browns win is giving me a buzz that no beer can.

If I reside in my parents' home with my child, can they cover him on their health insurance?

I'm an adult with a child, and recently was laid off from my job. I live with my parents since this hardship, and was wondering if because I reside with them, can they get him covered on their health insurance?

Do citizens of other nations have 16,000 IRS agents auditing their purchases of health insurance?

I would like to hear from our friends from Canada, the UK and elsewhere. Our health care reform bill is to be enforced by revenue agents whose duty will be to check each citizen's health insurance purchases for adequacy.
--------------------
No because they have universal health care so everyone is covered whether they pay for premium services or not. As far as the agents... JOB CREATION.

how much is usual visiting fee of a physician in jersey city for a person without an health insurance?

Hi, I am a citizen of India and currently in US for two months, purpose being education. My institute has asked me to undergo P.P.D test i.e. Tuberculosis skin test as per their policy. For which I think I should visit a physician. I don't have an international health insurance. Could anyone please tell me about the cost of physician's visit ? specifically in Jersey city for a non-insured person. Thank you and take care.
--------------------
A first time visit can run $40 to $200. Walk-in clinics are sometimes less expensive than private practice group/specialty clinics.

Is there health insurance that only covers for catastrophic claims?

It seems that paying $100's each month for health insurance is a racket... couldn't we just save that amount each month and get a plan that will help us if we have a major hospital bill? (we don't have coverage through work)
--------------------
The options available to you will differ depending on where you live, of course, but it sounds like what you're looking for is a high-deductible health insurance plan. Generally speaking, the more you are willing to pay for your annual deductible (that's what you pay per year before your full coverage kicks in), the less your monthly payments will be. You'll find that most brand-name health insurance companies will offer high-deductible health insurance plans to individuals and families. Your other commenter, 4532, is right to point out, however, that the "cost" of health coverage is about more than just what you pay out per month. You have to decide what you can afford and what kind of financial risks you want to run. But you may find that some high-deductible plans will provide coverage for preventive care (checkups, etc.) with a simple copayment, rather than requiring you to pay the full cost of services like that toward your deductible. 4532 is also right to steer you in the direction of Health Savings Accounts. They can only be used with qualifying high-deductible health plans and can help you pay for medical expenses with pre-tax dollars (up to a limit) . Whatever you do, I'd recommend that you talk with a licensed agent. You might also want to visit a website like eHealthInsurance.com (where I work). You can get free quotes from top health insurance companies in your area, compare plans side by side, talk to one of our licensed agents and apply online if you find a plan that meets your needs and budget. I don't just want to promote our company, but it is convenient since it's online. Whatever you do, talk to a licensed agent to help you get an idea of what's really available in your area. - Bob H. licensed agent.

Can I keep my current health insurance as my primary?

I have been on my spouses health insurance for 14 years. My new job gives me automatic coverage after 1000 hours. My new insurance is not as good as my current and I do not want to change. Will it be a problem to keep my spouses insurance as primary and only use mine as secondary?
--------------------
Yes, its a problem. You can't choose which plan is primary. Your plan is primary for you.

If Hillary Clinton is proposing MANDATED health insurance for all, what does she propose to do about the poor?

What about people who are living hand to mouth and cannot afford any type of health insurance, what about the homeless, what about those mentally ill or disabled? What about those who have lost jobs and/or income due to illegal immigrants? What exactly does mandated health insurance mean? Are ALL people to be eligible for health care even if they have no income to pay for it?
--------------------
I agree with your question, and I am not 100% sure that this is what she is proposing. But, I have heard that it is, and if so, I am totally against it. The health care system has to be a NOT FOR PROFIT, system for it to be just for everyone. Making it manditory for everyone to buy health insurance, the way they made it manditory for everyone to buy car insurance, is just another gift to the huge overbloated insurance companies, at the expense of the people. It is just another form of corporate welfare. This is one of the reasons that I do not support Hilary. I do support Kucinich now.....for several reasons. *sm*

If the Democrats are the party of choice, why do they want to force people to have health insurance?

Shouldn't a person be able to decide for themselves whether or not they want health insurance?
--------------------
Its unconstitutional as well.

Are there health insurance plans that are low premium, high deductible?

I mean like a $5,000-$10,000 deductible or higher. I have a lot of savings but I'm going to have a part-time job for a little while. I'd like to just pay $100-200 a month or lower for health insurance. Or as low a premium as possible.
--------------------
You might consider enrolling in a "qualified" High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). This is health insurance with high deductible amounts, so it costs less than traditional health insurance. Under federal law, the minimum deductible in a HDHP plan is $1,100; the maximum deductible is $5,500 for an individual (and $11,000 a family). The advantage of an HDHP is that you can shelter up to $2,850 for an individual from state and federal taxes in a Health Savings Account (HSA). Depending on your tax bracket and where you live, that could save you as much as $1,499 in taxes per year, assuming a combined tax rate of 52.6%—9.3% in state income tax (California), 28% in federal income tax, and 15.3% in self-employment Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) tax. Another way of looking at it is that an HSA doubles your buying power, since you are using pre-tax dollars to pay for deductibles. The contributions you make to an HSA are yours to keep, rolling over each year. The funds are not taxed, provided you use them to pay medical expenses or withdraw them after age 65. The funds earn interest on a tax-deferred basis. Think of it as an IRA that you can use to pay out-of-pocket medical expenses. To find a qualified plan, you should speak with a health insurance broker. A broker works with several insurers and can find the best plan, rates and coverage. To find a broker, log on to a website like http://www.healthinsurancewiz.com and fill out a form requesting a free quote. Your information will be sent to a broker in your area who will contact you. Good luck!

What are the Penalties for not having Health Insurance?

Alright I'm 20 years old still in college (almost finish) still living with the Fam. and I have a low Income (for now). The problem Is I want health Insurance, I heard the penalty is $600 if under 27 years but if your 27 and above it would be 900 something dollars is that true? And what is the best health plan for me. BTW I'm in Massachusetts.
--------------------
The penalty is 50% of the cost of whatever the least expensive plan for your age is for each month you are without insurance. So the cost will increase for each year older you are. Ameriplan is not insurance, it is a discount card. Be very wary of medical discount cards. They are not regulated by the Department of Insurance nor do the people that sell them need to be licensed. This means you have little recourse when you have problems with the plan. If you are tempted by the low price and claims of "save up to 80%" be aware that very few doctors actually take these cards. It does you little good if you have to drive 4 hours to find a doctor that will accept the card. Montana couldn't find any doctors in the whole state that actually took the card and only one dentist who was on probation for unlawful activities so they banned the sale of the card and fined the company. See this link http://www.insurancejournal.com/news/wes… for more information. Many other states are exploring whether or not to ban these cards as well, including MA.

Why would anyone want to give up the protections that states put on Health insurance?

McCain wants to eliminate protections that states put on health insurance by having people buy insurance under other state's laws. That will cause all health insurance companies to move to the state with the least protections for consumers. Just like the credit card companies do. Why would anyone want this?
--------------------
The mandates that states impose on health insurance companies can add enormous costs to the consumer. The lowest priced policy available for a family of 4 with a 50 year old male primary in Atlantic City is $726 per month. In Albuquerque New Mexico the price for the same family falls to $191 per month. No, the policies aren't even similar, but maybe the plan available in NM suites the needs and budget of someone living in Atlantic City who would like to save $6,420 per year on premiums. I can buy wine from California, why not a health insurance policy? What can possibly be wrong with putting the consumer in charge of their own health insurance, instead of labor unions and politicians. When does competition and choices ever hurt the consumer? which state is easy and best to become a real estate and health insurance agent?

I would like to know which state has easy requirements to become real estate agent and broker. are there any states that doesn't require 1 year agent experience to become broker or something like that. Also, i would like to know which state is easy and best requirements to become health/life insurance agent?
--------------------
It's pretty easy in California. The school is only a couple of weeks and then you take the state test. And that applies to real estate agent or insurance license. The insurance license state test is more difficult to pass. A good school for insurance license is Mike Russ. I don't work there, but I went there and it was a good school.

want to go to the emergency room but have no health insurance?

i don't have health insurance but my boyfriend wants to take me to E.R but i don't want to go because im afraid of the bill...what should i do? can we get insurance while we are there?
--------------------
PheonixB is right - if it's life threatening go to the ER. If not, contact your county health department to see if there is a county health center in your community. Our center sees anyone who comes to them. If you qualify for Medicaid they will help you with the paperwork. If not, they have a sliding scale fee based on your income, some people paying as little as a few dollars up to $15 or so. They also see patients with full insurance, people on Medicare, and people who pay in full. They are funded by private grants, federal grants, and grants from local hospitals, who save millions of dollars by people going to the center instead of the ER for routine care. Good luck to you!

A Question for our American Cousins, How much is the most expensive health insurance in the US?

I pay about £80 per month (around $160) which pays for me and my family to recieve full healthcare and my government pension when i retire (at 67 i believe) how much would the most expensive health insurance be in the states? (where all eventuallities are covered)
--------------------
it depends on what plan you have. When I had insurance when I use to live in america, I had a PPO (which means I can see any doctor I want) theres also a HMO (which means you are only allowed to see certain doctors) . With my employer I paid $100 a month without my employer I would have paid over $500 a month and thats just for myself, I was a smoker at that time, one of the reasons for it being so expensive. Now this is going back almost 4 years, so the prices are now changed. But thats what they were back then

Is their affordable Health Insurance for full time students?

I'm a full time college students & I no longer have Health Insurance because I turned 19. I can't go on my dads plan because its for people 65 & over or disabled. I've looked on the internet and haven't really found anything afforable besided for International students & and not internaional. I'd like to find insurance like they can get from ISO where they can pay $27 per month. I haven't found anything like that for myself & only paying 27-40 dollars a month would be GREAT! Can anyone help me?
--------------------
If you want a policy for $40 a month, it's going to have a HUGE deductible - like $5,000 - $10,000. If that's ok, go to a local, independent agent, and tell them you want a major medical policy. Medical discount plans are in your price range, but they aren't insurance! They offer you a discount, between 25% to 60%, to a limited number of providers. You might have to drive 200 miles to get to an emergency room that takes the discount - most do NOT. Then, you still have to pay your portion of the visit. The way insurance works, the lower the deductible, the higher the monthly premium. That's JUST how it is.
