My brother can not afford any health insurance because he's a student, what can he do?

He's 24 years old and lives in California. If he gets cancer or some type of illness that takes months to treat, will the hospitals or clinics treat him even though he doesn't have money? Can he file for bankruptcy if his bill gets into the hundreds of thousands?

What can I do about my health insurance not covering any weight loss pills at all?

they said ppo even medicaid or medicare won't cover weight loss pills... what can I do? I don't have enough money cuz I was laid off
--------------------
Good for your insurance! That's smart. Those pills do not work anyway! Stop spending your money on junk food. Eat a salad for lunch. Eliminate snacks. Walk, exercise. Stop looking for some useless crutch, and get yourself in gear to eat properly & exercise. Eat healthy, act healthy, and you will get healthy.

What family practices in Las Vegas accept saint mary's health insurance?

i just moved here from northern nevada, and i looked on the health plan web page and it looks like there arn't any family practices here that do. and i really!!!!! need to see a doc!!!
--------------------
There might not be any. Call the number on the back of your card, and ask for the 'out of network' benefit rates. And you'll probably have to change insurance, to find one in network.

Would Jesus vote for a National Health Insurance to give free care to the poor, sick, and needy?

I think He would. Jesus has commanded us to help the poor, the unfortunate. I have read nothing in Jesus' words that would deny care to those who can not afford it. Isn't passing a "public option" the Christian thing to do?
--------------------
You beat me to the punch. I was about to ask the same thing. Yes, Jesus would vote for National Health Insurance. I think Jesus would give every worldly possession to save 1 person. I do think people of faith that vote against a plan that is INTENDED to help people are hypocrites. If Republican, let's say Bush, were to put forth the same plan Obama did. The majority of conservative would be for it. I don't know when saving people became a Liberal thing to do. I don't consider myself to be Liberal nor Conservative, but if it is only going to cost me money to give someone HOPE that they will live then I think we should do it. The good thing about this country is that it can change things. If a bill isn't working, then come back and fix it. But let's start saving lives, Jesus would.

Americans, how much do you pay for health care insurance?

What happen if you were sick and did not have health care insurance?
--------------------
I don't have health insurance, I have to go to the doctors every 4 weeks and I pay cash and pay cash for my prescriptions. Are you in Canada? We don't get as much in taxes taken out because of the health insurance, so it pretty much all equals out.

When will pre-existing conditions no longer be held against health insurance applicants ?

Please, don't let it be in 2013.
--------------------
In the health reform proposals being considered in Congress the things reviewed when a person applies for an individual medical insurance plan would change. There is support, in several proposals, to eliminate the review of a persons health history and pre existing conditions. Insurance companies would continue to be able to set rates for things such as where the person lives, wellness factors such as smoking, and some amount of difference between a person who is in their 20s and age 60. This change however will not work or be effective unless the proposal includes a personal responsibility for everyone to have medical insurance When people do not have to have coverage and can wait until they have a medical problem to buy coverage the premium they will have to pay will be very very high. That does not accomplish anything! What Congress will do is certainly not know nor is the implementation timing of the various provisions. Some parts may in fact not take place until 2013 as you indicated. In the mean time there may be some useful information on this link: http://www.nahu.org/consumer/healthcare/… Look over the information - go to the bottom and enter your state for more specific information. You may find a coverage option you were not aware of. Good luck

what's the difference between health insurance and medicaid?

Thanks for any suggestions :)
--------------------
Medicaid is a government run program originally designed to assist people over 65 with their health care costs. It is now assisting people with low incomes who cannot afford other types of health insurance coverage. You have to apply for this coverage by calling 1-800-633-4227 and completing a formal process. If you qualify, it is a great way to get some assistance with costly medical expenses. Health Insurance is a private run industry made up of numerous companies who agree to cover some or all of your medical expenses in return for paying them a monthly premium. Health Insurance companies make money by charging you more in premiums and other fees than they have to pay out for your health care. Basically, the healthy people who never get sick help offset the cost of the sick people who run up huge bills. Why do women say it's discriminatory to charge them more for health insurance?

but it's not discriminatory to charge men more for auto insurance?
--------------------
Why do insurance companies pay for viagra but not for birth control for women probably because they have run the numbers and this increases their profits. Viagra=more babies but they don't pay for pregnancy and delivery on the basic policy, women have to pay higher rates to cover maternity expenses. You should ask this question of your insurance carrier.

Is Medicare A, B, and D enough health insurance? Do you need a $200+/month supplement to cover a heart bypass? Is Medicare A, B, and D enough health insurance? Do you need a $200+/month supplement to cover a possible triple bypass at age 71? How much will a triple bypass cost? What much will come out of my savings?

Talk to Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE -- they are very knowledgeable about these issues. Remember there are also Medicare Advantage plans (Medicare Part C) as an option -- these are plans provided by private insurers that provides all the benefits of traditional Medicare (Parts A & B). Many beneficiaries with only Medicare Part A and Part B get some sort of Medigap insurance. Also check out http://www.medicare.gov/ which contains a tool called "Medicare Option Compare."

How can I find a Health Broker to assist me with Health Insurance???

Need to find affordable healthcare and fast!!!!! Who can help me with information or any sites they might be aware of???? Any kind of info would help even reccomendations or Insurance companies... MUST BE IN CALIFORNIA...Thank you!!
--------------------
This can be a bit trickier of a question if you really think about it. Some of us are good, and some of us are evil. The problem is that many will only quote the higher commission plans Finding a broker is easy, just ask someone you know who owns a company who they would reccomend. Because you are in CA, make sure that the broker is independent and sells both Kaiser and Wellpoint. I know that these are 2 of the larger carriers there. There are other carriers in that market, I just do not know who they are... Below is a link to the CA dept of Insurance with several avenues to find an agent. Get 2-3 to quote the same plans, be specific, and see what comes back.

health insurance experts - an inexpensive health insurance for a college student in New York City?

the followings criteria must be met (due to my school's policy): 1. Medical and mental treatment in the NYC area that covers at least $100,000 (total) per sickness or accident; 2. Coverage for pre-existing conditions; 3. Medical evacuation and repatriation of at least $15000; 4. Repatriation of remains of at least $7500; and 5. A deductible not to exceed $500 per year. (I don't know what half of these words mean, haha) Anyone? I would really appreciate it if someone could give me a good suggestion. hopefully, I'd like to get an insurance under $1000 per academic year. thanks for comments!
--------------------
I'm guessing you're an international student, right? Contact an individual insurance agent to get quotes. I'd recommend one, but I don't know any in NY. Can the school recommend an agent or company? Ask their office for international students. Here's some definitions: PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS: Anything you have wrong with you or have seen a medical professional about in the period before coverage started. Usually the period is for 2 years, but could be longer. REPATRIATION OF REMAINS: Will pay to have your dead body returned to your home country if you should die while in the US. DEDUCTIBLE: The amount of the health care costs you must pay. For example, with a deductible of $500, you have to pay that amount before the insurance will pick up all costs, except for co-pays. CO-PAYS: The amount you have to pay for service. For example, under my insurance, at each office visit, I have to pay a co-pay of $20 just to go to the doctor, regardless of what the doctor charges the insurance.

Should one who signs a Living Will & rejects artificial means of survival pay A LOT less for health insurance?

I heard that one half of all money spent on healthcare is for the last six months of life. Is that true?
--------------------
I don't know, but society is awfully anxious to pull the plug on helpless people, even people who might get better if they were given the therapy and treatment they need. I myself have the opposite of a living will. I have instead a Will to Live which states not to deprive me of hydration or nutrition without my consent. Can you imagine being tortured to death by thirst or starvation? Ghastly!!!

My health insurance got cancelled without me knowing, what rights do I have?

I've had my insuance through my employer from october of '06. Money has been taken out of every paycheck to pay for the premium. I recently had an accident that required surgery and hospital stay in late feb. I have received three explanation of benefits from the insurance provider so far: 1.) for my ambulance ride which was covered. 2.) The first couple days with services shown as "Inpatient" and "Ancillary" which was covered. 3.) and a third peice of paper for the remainder of my stay for "SNFINPT" and "SNFANCIL" as the services provided but the third peice of paper states that I may be responsible for the bill because my membership was terminated prior to the date of service. I never received or heard anything from my employer or my insurance provider about my coverage being cancelled but my paycheck shows money being taken out for the premium up until the time of the injury. What rights do I have so I'm not stuck with this ridiculous bill? Any help would be great!
--------------------
Start with your HR person. Sometimes errors are made - either the premium payment was late and the entire company got cancelled - it's a HUGE pain in the neck, but it does happen. OR someone who's info is similar to yours was supposed to be cancelled, and they canceled you by mistake. As long as you can document (via your pay stubs) that you were paying your premiums, you have every reason to believe that you have coverage. Therefore, it was probably someone's mistake, and it needs to be rectified ASAP. BTW - contact the provider of service - the hospital and/or doctors to let them know you're fighting this so they don't think you're ignoring the bills.

Will illegal immigrants be fined/imprisoned for not purchasing health insurance?

Or will they get a FREE ride back "home" or rewarded with citizenship?
--------------------
don't worry about the illegals as our leftist friends in Congress will find some way of making sure health care is given to all, illegal or not. two ways to do it are 1. grant amnesty to them. 2. The health care bill won't start for 4 years, although the taxes to pay for it will start immediately, and they have 4 years to amend the bill to include illegals.

Are Health Insurance Deductions from Payroll pre-tax or post-tax?

I've recently realized that my company was deducting too much from my check towards my health insurance. So now they have to reimburse me. Should my reimbursement check be tax-free since the amount deducted was from post-taxed income?
--------------------
Health insurance deductions don't have to be deducted pre-tax, but if your company has a Section 125 plan in place, they usually are. I know where I work, deductions are automatically taken pre-tax unless an employee specifies otherwise in writing, or there is a domestic partner covered. Therefore, if the deductions came out of your paycheck on a pre-tax basis, your reimbursement will be taxed. If the deductions came out on a post-tax basis, then your reimbursement would NOT be taxes as you have already had taxes withheld, and would not have to have any withheld again. Hope that makes sense.
