How are health insurance companies supposed to remain in business?

if they have to cover thousands of people who guarantee them a lose of over $100,000 each? Since the Democrats' goal is not to drive private insurance out of business.
--------------------
The answer to that specific question is THE DEMOCRATS WILL RAISE TAXES ON THE REST OF US TO PAY FOR THE HEALTH INSURANCE of those who can not afford it. What will bankrupt the insurance companies is eliminating the pre-existing condition exclusion. Look up "adverse selection." THAT is what will kill the insurance companies. Insurance companies will simply stop selling health insurance, and you won't be able to buy it anyplace.

Health Insurance Plan for person with pre-existing condition?

Does anyone know a good health care plan when someone has a pre-existing condition? My husband really needs to take another job but they are a small place that doesn't offer health insurance. We need insurance for the whole family or he can't leave his job. My husband has a mental illness if that makes a difference on the pre-existing condition part. Thanks for any help.
--------------------
Find out the insurance company he uses and see if they have plans that you can get as an individual. Get enrolled while he is still working. Example: My company had BlueCross/BlueShield they have different categories where you don't have to get insurance through your employer. Most insurance providers will cover the pre-existing conditions if you have insurance when enrolling. Good luck. If you have kids you may want to put them on a state insurance plan or Medicaid. He may be able to get Medicaid also because of his mental illness to cover him until his pre-existing time period has been cleared.

How do health insurance plans apply a deductible to prescription medicines?

My insurance (Unicare Platinum PPO Performance) says there is a $25 copay on brand name prescriptions. It also says there is a $200 deductible on brand name prescriptions. Last Friday I picked up Levaquin and I had to pay $150. They said it's because I haven't met my deductible yet. So how does that work? Do I have to pay regular prices on brand name prescriptions until I've paid $200 during the 12-month period before I can start paying $25 per prescription? I thought the copay started automatically. I guess I was naieve.
--------------------
That's where the insurance company gets you. Yes, you pay out of pocket entirely until you meet your deductable. The next time you get a prescription make sure to ask your doctor for a medication that has a generic available. Levaquin has no generic as of yet, but a drug in the same class called Cipro does, and that little change could've saved you from having to pay out of pocket, you would've paid just your generic copay. Unfortunately, if you don't know much about medications, insurance companies can get out of paying for medications. Always ask when your bill is high if there was something similar your doctor could've written that would save you money. The pharmacist can always call your doctor and request that a medication be changed.

What private health insurance can I choose with pre-existing conditions?

My family cover has just ended and I now have to get my own personal insurance. I have a pre-existing condition (nothing major) but I want it covered for in case it flares up. My current insurers, AXA ppp, have ask for an arm and a leg. Are there any other insurers that insure me for my pre-existing conditions or are able to act as an intermediary for AXA ppp and offer a better deal?
--------------------
It will depend on which state you live in. You posted to the usa, but axa is usually UK, so I'm guessing you posted to the wrong board. But if you didn't, you really need to see a LOCAL broker, who can explain how it works in your state.

What is the best way to compare health insurance rates? Any tips for finding cheap insurance?

I could really use some insurance, but my job doesn't offer benefits. I'm willing to pay what I have to...if I can...but I want to make sure I'm going with the best deal, too. Thanks!

Matrenity benefits - which health insurance to choose?

I have moved to the US on a dependent visa. All health insurance companies I contacted so far have a waiting period of 12 months for availing maternity benefits. I want to start planning a family sometime this year.. Is there any health insurance which does not have a waiting period? Pls help!!!
--------------------
Employer-sponsored health insurance is less likely to have a waiting period. So if you can get coverage through your employer, or through your husband's job, it probably won't have a waiting period. But check to be sure. Also you could try an HMO, such as Kaiser Permanente, to see if they don't have a waiting period. but probably most do, otherwise they would lose a lot of money, since having a baby is very expensive. If you are poor, your state's Medicaid program covers prenatal and delivery healthcare for pregnant women, but you must meet income and asset requirements, in other words be living in poverty.

Should the government pay for health insurance?

Health insurance is ridicuously expensive. Should the government pay for it especially for people under a certain income? Other countries pay for their citizen's insurance why can't the U.S.?

Just found out that I am pregnant, I have not health insurance. What should I do?

I am 20, soon to be 21. I just found out I am pregnant. I am 5 weeks, 1 day. I don't have health insurance. I am currently working, but only have a part time job. My job doesn't cover part-time employers with insurance, what should I do????? My fiance has really good insurance, but it doesn't cover me since we're not married yet. Need help. I've looked into medicaid, and not sure how that works.
--------------------
You're on the right track!!! You must go to your city's Dept. of Human Services nearest you and show them proof of your pregnancy and they will definitely get you started on Medicaid and any other service you may need to better insure a healthy beginning for your pre-natal care!!! Congratz and Good luck!!! Don't worry, Medicaid is a BEAUTIFUL blessing for us mothers-2-b that don't have insurance. It helps so much.

Health Insurance. Why do costs differ from state to state when the coverage and provider are the same?

We are a few years away from 65 and moving from Maryland to Florida. Costs for the same high deductable health coverage from our health provider will cost 5 times the amount we pay now. We are healthy and have never put in a claim. Have any of you pre-medicare seniors found an affordable provider in Florida that provides good coverage for under $6k per year?
--------------------
Costs differ state to state because each state is rated seperately. Many of the states have different law or regulations on what insurance can/should/must/can't do, and as a result, each state is its own separate series of issues. And, unfortunately, a lot of people retire to Florida. The older a group of people, the higher the risk, and the higher the risk, the higher the cost. Congratulations on the transfer to warmer climates! If you are looking for a way to lower your costs and are in good health, I would suggest looking into what Blue Cross or Blue Shield has to offer in the way of Health Savings Account Compatible plans.

What kind of health care insurance system do the top 20 major industrialized democracy based govts have?

I am talking about the top 10 most economically successful countries in the world. What kind of health care insurance system do they have? which ones resemble the USA's the most??
--------------------
Now that the US has adopted it, 10 out of 10 have socialised care, i.e. everybody has to pay health insurance and gets free basic care. But you might be interested to know, that all EU countries, Eastern and Western have this system, so does Japan, Singapore, Australia. So not only economically strong countries think this is a good idea. Most countries have understood, that if they have a healthy population, they have a productive one. If everyone can have medical treatment before illnesses become serious, everyone saves money and people live longer and more productive lives.

How much will health insurance rates rise when the government makes insurers?

insure those with preexisting conditions? And they require: Prescriptions to be included. All doctors visits to be included. Dental to be included. Mental health to be included. And people really think we are going to get all that AND pay less too? Yeah right...
--------------------
Because there will also be a mandate to insure healthy people. Those extra premiums from people who don't get sick should make up the difference. The only people going nuts against this plan are the insurance companies, whose outrageous profits (that's income after all other costs) might have to drop a little bit. The trade off is a healthier population.

Can an insurance company deny my family health care because I'm pregnant even though I'm not in the plan?

I have my own health insurance and my husband and kids were looking at health insurance just for them, and because I'm pregnant they were denied even though I would not be on the same plan or even get my health care insurance from the same company. How does my pregnancy allow a company to deny health care to my two boys?
--------------------
Under federal law, when you deliver, if the father of the child has health coverage (group or individual) they insurance company is required to add the baby on the date of birth. So if you have a NICU baby, they would be required to cover it and the costs involved. And since they don't take chances, they refuse to cover the mother and the father. However, they will normally cover the siblings. Reapply, asking just for coverage on your sons.

Is it legal to start paying a premium for group health insurance a month before it kicks in?

I sustained a foot injury last week but actual coverage starts August 1. In other words, I am paying for insurance coverage but I am not deriving the benefit.
--------------------
Legal and common. See, it's not your policy - it's your employer's policy. On August 1st when the coverage starts, they have to pay the insurance company in full, for the month, for you. So they take the money out of your check in July, so they have it, when the time comes to PAY for it. But the insurance company itself, hasn't actually been PAID yet for you. So you did not PAY for the coverage - you set the money aside to pay for it. Not the same thing at all.

where can I get short term health insurance?

I need short term health insurance. what popular insurance companies offers this?
--------------------
May I suggest to you Ameri Plan's discount benefits program. They do not have any restrictions on ongoing conditions and you can start saving immediately. There is a hospital advocacy program that assigns you a personal advocate to negotiate with doctors on your medical bills. The plan also includes savings on dental, vision, prescription and chiropractic care. I'd check them out. I'm so proud to be with them. I know I shouldn't advertise, but your need sounds great. Let me know if you have any questions. wlakin@ameriplan.net http://www.mybenefitsplus.com/40378118 Plans are month to month with no contract. We are currently running a promotion for just the dental, vision, prescription and chiropractic plan where you can try it out for 3 months for $23 total. This is a great service. You should check it out!

Which health insurance in Missouri is best for bariatric surgery?

I need bariatric surgery. My current insurance, well it's not the world's best for it (mercy healthcare, HMO) and I dont meet the requirements. I was recently married and in January must find my own insurance. Anyone know which insurance would be best to check into getting that would potentially cover bariatric surgery? I live in Missouri...only other thing I definitely would need the insurance to cover would be my cardiologist, but he takes most every insurance I've thought of.
--------------------
Tough question. My mother had similar surgery and her insurance covered the whole thing because she was also diabetic. I can't remember who they were. try checking through some diabetic websites and maybe they can help.

What kind of health insurance does your family have?

Do you get it through work, yourself, or are your children on medicaid? If you get the insurance through yourself what do you pay per month and what is your deductable? Just curious :)

We have Federal BlueCross Blue shield through my husband's job (Dept of the Army). When I was working at an Orthopedic clinic I had Health Adv that the doctors of the clinic paid for. That was soooo nice. We have a $15 copay for dr visits and on our son's wellness checkups (he is 5 months old) we don't have to pay a copay. We pay $330 a month for this insurance. For Rx we 10% for generic and 20% for name brand. The cheapest Rx we paid for was .98 cents!
