Why Would Govt Force People To Buy Health Insurance?

If someone doesn't have enough money to buy insurance , govt wants to fine them or throw them in jail. How the heck does govt know- if someone can afford it or not? I think this is all such a scam!

Can my health insurance company ask for this information?

I am covered through a large group plan in CA. The employees were just informed that the insurance company wants all the following information or they will cancel your insurance: birth certificates for children, divorce papers, marriage certificates, etc. I thought this was a totally violation of privacy laws! Am I missing something???
--------------------
You're missing something. See, people have been adding girlfriends and kids that aren't theirs, to their insurance policies - calling them spouses and their own children. This is insurance fraud. To verify that your girlfriend really IS your wife, you need to show the marriage certificate. You need to show that the children are yours, by showing the birth certificate or adoption papers. "Dependents" who are illegally on your policy, will be removed. How do they prove that they aren't really a dependent? They can't - so they request you to provide proof that they legally ARE a dependent.

How much would health insurance cost me? I'm eighteen.?

I am eighteen years old and in excellent health. I am graduating high school and taking a year off before college to work and travel. Does anyone know approximately how much a health insurance policy would cost me per month? I think I need one because I won't be a full time student next year. Thanks.
--------------------
That's like asking how much a new car will cost you; without knowing what kind of car you want and with what options and where you are located no one can really tell. I could get you a policy for under $40 or a policy for over $300. Visit a local agent that works with all the major companies in your area. The agent can find the best policy for your situation and budget. There is no extra charge using an agent.

What should one do, when a medical provider charges above health insurance allowance?

Dissatisfied with UnitedHealth's allowance, a radiologist is charging me $188 above copay. UnitedHealth has protested these charges, still he keeps billing me.
--------------------
Does the radiologist have a signed contract with United Healthcare? If not, then there isn't much you can do about it. A non-contracted doctor does not have to accept the insurance allowed amount, and you can be billed the difference. If the radiologist does have a signed contract with United Healthcare *and* your Explanation of Benefits says that you are not liable for the $188, then I wouldn't pay it. Make sure to save the EOB, so that you have some proof for dispute if the radiologist attempts to send you to collections.

Can You Please Tell Me Your Horror Stories With Your Health Insurance Provider?

It has been said that Insurance Providers are only in for their money and that their clients don't really matter to them, as do clients for companies that are not insurance companies. Too many insurance providers is killing the system.
--------------------
Insurance providers are in it for the money, just like you are. However people do not understand how insurance works and think that the mysterious insurance carrier has buckets and buckets of money, however if you take advantage of your medical insurance, you are hurting your employer in the long run, running up premiums they have to pay. Insurance companies need to make money to pay their employees and have money on hand for future claims payouts.

Where does Obama think that America can pay for all health insurance for Americans and not raises taxes?

on everyone? raising coroporate taxes just means prices go up...like the minimum wage... A single-payer system would eliminate private insurance companies and put a Medicare-like system into place where the government pays all health-care bills with tax dollars. http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/category/h…
--------------------
Just tax corporations into bankruptcy, this will cause more unemployment, this means people will have less stress because they are not working and therefore they will be in better health and will not have to go to the doctor. This Obama, he has got it together, he has a plan.

Health Insurance for my family while I am active duty?

My ship date is August 10th & I am really confused with how Tricare works. Could I get feedback on costs, type of plan(Prime/Standard), etc? I have a wife and son. My wife prefers not to see a health care provider on post. I've been searching for info but no sites out there seem to have the exact costs(deductibles, co-pay, premiums) I would really appreciate all the help.
--------------------
When your wife and kids are enrolled in DEERS they will be automatically enrolled in Tricare Standard. Standard has co-pays and deductibles, and is great for people who want the freedom to choose their own civilian doctor, but it does cost a bit more. Usually standard is the most useful is you have health insurance from another source. Unless you visit a tricare network provider, you're usually responsible for filing claims. You get little priority at an on-base military treatment facility (MTF). The deductible is $100 for a family or $50 for an individual. Copay is usually 20% for a non-network doctor, or 15% if you use a network provider. Tricare Prime is the one that most AD family members enroll in. You get first priority to on-base treatment, or you can choose a civilian tricare network primary care manager to handle your healthcare. They can refer you to another civilian doctor if you need specialty care. There is no annual deductible. There is usually no co-pay. Get onto the tricare website and compare plans. http://www.tricare.mil/mybenefit/Profile… Or, if you live near a base you can drive there and visit the Tricare Service Center (usually located at the hospital or clinic) and talk to someone directly. That's what I did, and it was a LOT more helpful. Or there's also a telephone number you can call. (what part of the country are you?) I prefer prime. I'd recommend prime for your son as well. Look at standard for your wife and decide if the flexibility combats the out-of-pocket costs Edit: You're responsible for enrolling them in DEERS first though (form 1172...I think you'll do that at basic). Once you enroll them in DEERS, your wife will need to go and get her dependent ID card. Once they're in DEERS, whoever wants tricare prime will need to be enrolled in tricare prime. If she enrolls by the 20th of the month, coverage starts up the first of the coming month. After the 20th it takes another month. for example, enrolling by June 20 means coverage starts July 1, but enrolling on June 21 means coverage starts August 1. There's no enrollment for Tricare standard, it's automatic through DEERS.

Why is the GOP saying government will screw up health insurance so badly that no one can compete with them?

Sarah Palin is good with sports analogies. Let's ask her if she's ever heard of a basketball team that was so awful that no one else in the league could beat them.
--------------------
Government health care will disrupt the oligarchy that now exists. They will fight tooth and nail to stop their "cosa nostra" from falling. Will gov't healthcare be perfect? No way! But, it will shake up the system and possibly place the focus back where it belongs; the patient.

What type of reforms to the nation's health insurance system do you favor?

Government-based reforms, or market-based reforms? Why? Thanks.
--------------------
Market based. The free market has always been superior to government bureaucracy. I would prefer to go back to the old days when we paid for our own health care as we went and had hospitalization insurance if anything really major happened. (Sigh!) Doctors even made house calls back then! .

Has anyones health insurance change today at work?

I was at work today and my employer told me that we had to go from paying $37 bi weekly to paying now in Jan 09 $90 bi weekly.
--------------------
No, mine has not gone up. This has nothing to do with elections. Ask your employer. You can't blame it on Obama. He is not President yet, therefore, your insurance going up is not a result of Obama getting elected. Ask your boss why it went up.

What should I do if my tonsils have been swollen for 9 months and I dont have health insurance?

I went to see a doctor and it cost 300 dollars and I got two prescriptions. Nothing worked and I cant afford to go back. I cough somewhat consistently and my throat always feels clogged. Also, it is a little difficult to breathe. I quit smoking two weeks ago hoping this would help but it didnt. Is this something serious? Should I be worried?
--------------------
Sounds like you REALLY need to go to the ER... if you really really cant afford it, take lots of vitamins, drink orange juice AND take 2 capsules of Echinacea. If you dont know what Echinacea is, here is some more info: Echinacea is popularly believed to be an immunostimulator, stimulating the body's non-specific immune system and warding off infections. You can usually get it at Walmart. If you cant find it there, go to a nutrition store such as GNC. It really does work... for me and my family at least. The other day I was suffering from the flu. I downed some vitamins, drank some orange juice, took some echinacea and drank a whole 2 quarts of powerade, and I felt way better the next day. Thank God because I hate the flu!

I live in ca.my employer said I had to wait 1 month after my 90 days for my health insurance, is that right?

1 month after my 90 days for my health insurance to take affect, to me it dosen't sound right. is there a law that states when employers need to provide benifits to their employees.
--------------------
My guess is that your insurance will go into effect on the first day of the month following your 90th day on the job. It stands to reason if you were employed mid-month. There is no law requiring employers to provide benefits, except to pay their share of your Social Security and Medicare premiums. If you have benefits, don't complain about when they start, because it's the employer's decision to provide them. In this day and age, a lot of employers are cutting back on benefits for employees.

I live with my fiance, can I get health insurance coverage through his.?

I am currently attending school and I live with my fiance. He works and has health insurance is it possible for me to also be covered under his health insurance policy?
--------------------
Some insurance companies will cover significant others that are not married. My insurance through my employer will cover my significant other but I have to show proof that we have been living together for 3 years plus. What my insurance company requires is for him to show utility bills, car insurance or credit card statements that are coming directly to my house. The rates for adding a significant other are the same as if we were married. Luckily for me, we broke up after 3 years so now I don't have to pay extra premiums. Have your finacee check with his insurance company to see what their requirements are.

Would a proposed tax on Cadillac health insurance plans be considered a move towards everybody having the same?

insurance eventually?
--------------------
That's the goal of the bill. Tax our Insurance carriers, tax quality plans, and then subsidize people who prefer to spend money on Big screen TV's and cell phones. I see it every day. I'm an insurance agent. I have clients who live in 50K homes and have 100K worth of goods. I still cannot figure out how they obtained this.

Can your company cut off your health insurance early, before firing you?

I think they're trying to fire me... I just called my insurance to check something & they didn't even recognize my member ID or social security number. Does that mean they're about to fire me?
--------------------
Your employer can cancel insurance at any point in time, without notifying the employees. They CANNOT take one employee off the insurance. If the MEMBER ID wasn't recognized, that's the same id for the entire plan - my guess is, EVERYONE got their coverage cancelled.

How many small businesses will go under if mandated health insurance for all employees is law?

Small business is struggling enough ...if this is required it will indeed backfire.......Workmans comp is bad enough!@!!!!! what say you?
--------------------
And then add $9.50 an hour minimum wage to that. Either they will have to up their prices and hope not to loose customers or fold up. Chances are that Obamas policies will destroy our economy. I say 30% or more small businesses will fold up.

Why are the Democratic Senators from small states in bed with the Health Insurance Companies?

Like the weasle Baucus getting 3.9 million in contributions from them. I say, fire those hypocrites, what do you say.
--------------------
Baucus is a traitor as the other democrats that vote against the will of the people. 65% of americans want a public option and that is the abc news poll. 84% want health care reform. Baucus is a dirtbag hypocrite and he should be voted out with a true democrat challenger next election. End the fake dems. That is my new motto. END THE FAKE DEMS

Why is everyone's health insurance premium the same?

Obviously it would be very difficult to get the public to accept health insurance premiums using age or gender as a rating variable, but why not lifestyle choices such as smoking or obesity? It's not right that someone who smokes and who is 100 pounds overweight pays the same premium that I do.
--------------------
I'll take this more from a group plan perspective. They CAN actually charge more for certain lifestyle choices, such as smoking. Some companies have actually fired employees who didn't quit smoking, as this is something employers may discriminate by when considering employment. My company charges an extra $25/mo if you or your spouse is a smoker. It is harder to vary rates by overweight or fitness level (even if it is for the fat, lazy slob who eats 3 big macs for lunch every day). Because of ERISA (which governs group benefit plans), companies can not discriminate on the basis of pre-existing conditions. Someone may have a hereditary condition or medical condition that makes them overweight or unable to exercise as much (hypothyroid or a bad heart). Because of this, it's extremely difficult to come up with criteria to separate out the people who just don't take care of themselves from the ones who may have some medical reason. If it makes you feel any better, they will die sooner, meaning that their pension and retiree medical benefits are likely worth less (if the company still has these).

What type of health insurance do you have?

i'm shopping around for a policy with good maternity coverage, but the only ones i can find have a waiting period of 12 months (which is out of the question b/c we will be ttc within the next 3 months). who do you have your policy through? what is the coverage? any other options? thanks
--------------------
I have PacifiCare Sighnature POS though United Health Care. I have excellent coverage. The one-time copay was $15 and after that I don't pay anything. Delivery (hospital) is $0 everything is paid for. EDIT: Now if you are having difficulty finding a good health insurance you can always (as others have mentioned) apply for Medicaid/Medi-Cal. You will automatically qualify once you get pregnant. No pregnant women will ever get denied regardless of income.
