Do you think the government should force health insurance?

The health care reform bill is going to force every legal citizen to purchase health insurance, regardless of whether or not you want it. Is the US government suppose to be telling us what to do in this matter? Don't we still have rights and isn't one of them the right to chose health insurance? What other rights is the government going to take away from us after this passes? Where is the outrage? Amendment 9: The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people. I think this gives me the right to not have health care if I don't want it. Also, Griswold v. Connecticut established that the 4th amendment has an implied right to privacy. Based on this precedent, the government is not allowed to invade my privacy and force me to acquire health care. Article 1 / Section 8 / Clause 3 [Congress shall have the power] To regulate commerce with foreign nations, and among the several states, and with the Indian tribes This gives congress the power to regulate interstate trade. I hate to break this to all you socialists out there, but health care is not interstate trade unless you travel outside your state to get health care.

Why is it health insurance can't pay 100 percent when 80 percent usually leaves most with a huge bill?

One big problem healthcare in my family (married couple, 2 children) is that even when our insurance does pay, it only pays 80 percent, and we are stuck with a huge bill or bills especially after a hospital visit or stay from multiple facilities. I have so many health problems even though I am only 29 that we cannot pay every medical bill that we owe, it is impossible. We pay what we can, but still end up having some go on our credit. Now people with Medicaid, which I do think is wonderful for those who need it, end up not having any left over bills and us people who make 45,000 to 50,000 a year end up with huge bills we cannot ever pay due to our other obligations like house payment and car payments and things for our children, which are much more important than a left 500-600 dollar hospital bill plus multiple others, especially when we basically live paycheck to paycheck anyway. What can be done about this?

this sounds crazy but you already admit you can not pay all med bills .So if you look up your credit report you are already listed as a risk This is what you do Quit paying any med bill after insurance. This is why for many reasons 1. medical bills generally never hurt your credit scores if you keep up with the rest of your debts 2. every person with a ounce of brains knows what a rip off these bills are 3. The med bills are delibertaly over priced so those who have insurance pay for those who do not have any. 4. when the insurance company pays they get a huge discount that you never see on any of your bills. 5. When my son in law had emergency surgery his tab came to 32,000 dollars. I met with my daughter His wife at the Hospitals accounting office before they checked out.They had no insurance or means to pay the bill so I settled the account for them.I told the lady that I would give them 4000 cash if they would mark the bill paid in full.I gave her 3 minutes to accept or likly never get a cent as the kids had no way of paying. They tried to argue but I told her you have one minute left after that I walk. As I have no responsibility to even offer a settlement take it or get nothing. THEY TOOK IT>>>> You can do the same walk in make a offer show the cash they accept or walk never more to return.or feel obligated to pay. at 15 cents on the dollar they still are making a profit. $20 for a .05 cent asprin proves they are way out of line. Every one has a right to make a profit but not that much or at the risk of your well being ,peace of mind and severe stress it causes your family.

This makes no sense to me. Proofread. Investors provide capital so businesses can expand. Businesses use the capital for a variety of purposes, including hiring new people. However, there are other ways to expand without the risk and cost of hiring new people, so the number hired is going to have something to do with the risk-adjusted cost of each new employee.

I don't currently have health insurance. My husband got laid off from his job in January. We had health insurance through his work and we were given the option to do the COBRA health insurance through them. COBRA is offered to all employees and their families after an employee is laid off or fired. However, the premiums were near $800 a month for the COBRA, which is almost 4 times as much as we had been paying each month! We simply couldn't afford it! For people like me, there are not really any resources that can help. I make too much money to be considered for government assistance (I make a whopping $18,000 a year), but too little to be able to afford health insurance! You are an amazing person for wanting to help! I hope that you find a way to do so!

The best plan will depend on a lot of things. First things first, only look at companies that are large enough to avoid going out of business in the face of the health care reform. Small companies may be forced to raise their rates in effort of driving you away or just plain shut their doors, possibly leaving you with an unsettled claim or without coverage. Next, work with an independent agent that represents all the major companies in your state. You are not likely to find an agent who only represents one company recommend anything other than their policies. An independent can offer you plans from several companies and with the prices being set by law you won't be able to buy it cheaper anywhere else anyway. The next thing to consider is your health and that of everyone to be covered on your policy. DON"T GET DENIED COVERAGE. It is a negetive thing to have on your record. An agent can fact find, submit an anonymous prescreen evaluation and likely prevent a denial situation. Don't just blindly apply. Some companies will be more competitive based on factors like; high blood pressure, overweight, prescribed drugs etc. Let an agent guide you to which companies are more tolerant of you specific conditions. Finally, decide whether a traditional copay style plan or an HSA (Health Savings Account) is right for you. You can look over your past annual averages for health care expenses to help determine which style of plan would have saved you money in the long run. Often times an HSA is the most economical plan for individuals and families alike. They typically have high deductibles(ex. $5,000) that help reduce monthly premiums. A $5,000 deductible may seem outrageous, but hospitals allow you to set up payment plans that create affordable monthly payments. I encourage you to speak with an independent agent in your area. They will be able to listen to your needs, show you your options and allow you to make the decision that's right for you.

If either one of you is employed, you need to understand what the scope of maternity benefits are in each of those plans. Depending on these things, then maybe you can make a decision which plan offers the better coverage. From a standpoint of good coverage, the best coverage comes from a group insurance policy. These are the types of policies that are given to you from your employer. If you do not have that option, then your only other option is an individual policy. However, you will find out that individual policies are much more expensive, and can contain much less generous benefits than a group policy. Read your plans carefully, and make sure you have someone explain how they will work during your period of maternity.

The internet test, has to be PROCTORED. That means, you have to take it at a testing center - you can't take it from home. But yes, that's how it goes.

19 year old student - health insurance with 1 million lifetime max enough?

I don't currently have a job; I'm just a student, so it's doubtful that I will even keep this insurance the rest of my life. I have a $750 deductible with $2k max out of pocket and no deductible on prescriptions, but the lifetime max is only 1 million. I know with a chronic condition that would be eaten up, but is it sufficient for now?

At age 19 1 million is adequate. Statistically speaking you have very little chance of capping one million. However, depending on the carrier you may be able to extend the lifetime max for very little additional premium. I have been a health agent for 15 years and chances are that if you have medical expenses in excess of $1 million, you would not survive the accident/illness in question anyway. Having said all of that however, you may want to seek a reinsurer who will come in and accept risk for any medical bills in excess of one million. The premium should be next to nothing, and for obvious reasons. In my opinion you have ample coverage. My only suggestion would be to see if your policy has an aggregate. ( a per sickness/accident limit) you could have a one million lifetime max, but you may have a per illness/accident cap of only say $250,000 for example....this is important to know. Also in response to Kay's comment....NEVER rely on insurance from your employer. EVER. It's YOUR responsibility and not your employer's (or your government's for that matter) to protect your financial assets. Employer based policies ALWAYS end. Termination, job change, etc. An individually owned plan is yours as long as you pay the premium, and gives you much more control and freedom. what would happen if you worked for a company who offered health insurance, but then you had a heart attack or got diabetes? Then you would be FORCED to stay at that job just to have coverage. Whereas if you had a private plan your job would not be slave to your benefits, etc. You need to look into an HSA (Health Savings Account) which will not only save you monthly premiums but also assist you in paying less taxes AND saving for retirment.

That very number is contrived to begin with. It was invented to make things sound terrible. I am considered "uninsured" by the libs' way of counting because I don't get my health insurance through my employer. I **have** health insurance, just not through my employer, but that doesn't matter -- they count me as "uninsured." But the thing you need to understand is the health insurance law was NEVER meant to help the poor or the disadvantaged (there's already a program in place for that -- Medicaid). The sole purpose of this bill was to give the federal government more power and control over the lives of Americans.

I'm on your side with this. People are responsible for their own health care insurance. Take you for example...look how much you pay...but you still do...kudos to you!!!! I own a business and pay for everyone who works for me. People who want to sit back and cry and beg for something else for free make me sick. Those of us who work for a living and own businesses either buy insurance or provide insurance and this is America and people get enough for free as it is. If people want a socialized medical system they need to either move to Canada or Europe. This is America and we are not under a socialist system. Websites are great, but be sure you ask the right questions and you are getting the right insurance for you...a book that I thought was wonderful in explaining this and mentioning all the right websites was "Healthcare for Less" by MIchelle Katz...the book is easy to read and well worth the $10!!!! I've used it and had no problems with it. I agree that their regular interest is high but they do offer 0% interest for X number of months if the procedure is above $300. Which is the only way I'd use it. If the procedure is less than $300 I'd prefer to either pay in cash or use another card that does give a 0% promo. If a person does get the 0% promo, it's always best to pay more than the minimum payment that they request and also try to have it paid off at least one month before the promo expires. If you do get the 0% promo rate, it's a great way to have a payment history showing on your reports without having to pay any interest.

Good health insurance is expensive. e.g. they could easily spend $500 or more/mo for the two of them (just guessing, it could be more or less). this kind of money will buy a lot of health care unless you have a serious medical condition. Roughly, the higher the monthly flat cost to the insured (called a premium), the lower the variable costs (copayments and deductibles). HMO's for example have high premiums but the insured only pays $10 or $20 typically per visit to the doctor. Other plans might charge more per visit and less in monthly premiums. if your brother and his wife are self-employed, young and healthy, they may want to consider getting only "catastrophic coverage". it has a high deductible (the amount that the insured must cover every year before the insurance carrier starts to pay out) -- several thousand $$ -- and is designed to prevent financial ruin in the case of serious, unforeseen medical care. the insureds would pay for their routine health care, but if they get very ill and need hospitalization, they would quickly use up their deductible and the insurance would then take over. I suggest you and they talk with agents for several different kinds of insurance and learn all about their options. health insurance is only one element in overall financial planning. they should buy only what they need.
