Is there a statute of time, health insurance lien holders have to seek payment on a personal injury settlement

This question is for the state of New York.
--------------------
Not exactly. Once the lein is there, it's there forever, until discharged by bankruptcy court or debt payment. But the subrogation laws are still subject to the statute of limitations. This translates as, if you don't sue the at fault party before your state statute of limitations is up, you can't collect any money from them, and neither can your health carrier. But if the settlement is offered and accepted, your health insurer can come after you - with no time limit - to be reimbursed for the money YOU received, that should have been used to cover the medical bills, they covered. You can't double dip - be paid by two different people for the same claim. So that second payment is going to be recoverable by the first payer, forever.

Do you think health insurance companies are in the business of providing health care?

or are they in the business of denying health care? They only make money when they deny health care. Would not health care costs drop if we eliminated this unnecessary middle man?
--------------------
Most health insurance companies are businesses, and are there to make money. There are some not for profit health insurance providers, but they're still businesses, and they still have to bring in money to cover operating expenses. There is a growing trend in the medical business, cash only doctors. Without all the overhead and middlemen to deal with their services cost less than those of doctors participating in managed care contracts. That may be the way to make health care affordable, get rid of the insurance companies.

If everone in America canceled thier health insurance, what would happen?

WWould this bring prices and services back to a competitive enviorment?
--------------------
I've been saying that is what we really need to do for quite a while. Insurance is a middleman industry and middlemen never make anything cheaper.

Have you ever lost your income, car, home and health insurance due to an illness. How did you recover?

I saw similar questions on yahoo answers but no one seemed to answer that question. I'm not talking about your soul or your life, rather i'm talking about your ability to survive in the modern world. Like it takes money to buy food, and it takes money to buy a car which is needed to get to work, but you need work to get a car, but you cant't work because you have no transportation. And if your off work for an illness you need a doctor's statement that you can work, but you have to have money to see a doctor which you don't have because you aren't working. I'm talking about the circle of thinking that gets you nowhere like you have to have this to get that, but in order to get that you have to have this which is dependent on something else that you can't do because of some other obstical.

your thinking to far ahead, when you get up in the morning just think about making it through one day.

does anyone have atlantis health insurance? and if so, do you like it?

hey all, my cobra is expiring and I am thinking about getting atlantis health insurance. anyone else have it? waht do you think? would you reccomend it?
--------------------
Atlantis is a plan available in NYC. It was started by 12 NY physicians and is tailored to be low cost insurance that actually provides care for the people of NYC. Sounds good. They do have a network that you need to stay within to minimize costs as well as 'riders' that you can add on for more coverage. They offer a BUNCH of different plans so you can pick and choose depending on what you want. Be sure that you think about that carefully! Wanting basic care then getting a policy for basic physicals and yearly exams is great but if you're in an accident that hospital coverage, physical therapy and DME coverage really comes in handy!! I had an opportunity to deal with them regarding an insurance dispute for a client and they were wonderful! Calls were returned, records reviewed and they came back and paid additional money on a claim resulting in a big reduction in the patients bill. The customer service was helpful and I would be happy to deal with them again. Kudos to the doctors who started this for the people in their city and actually seem to care about more than the bottom line. If the service stays this way and people choose their coverages wisely I highly recommend this company. AzureZ - you make a wonderful point! A name change might help their enrollment!

What do you think of Obama's ideas about health insurance? Agree or Disagree and why?

Serious answers please!
--------------------
I live in Massachusetts, and we just recently instituted Mandatory Health Care Coverage for ALL state residents. They way it works is, if you already have full coverage, you are all set and don't need to do anything. But if you don't have full coverage, or if you have no coverage at all, the state provides coverage for you. The thing people need to realize is that universal health care is not about "welfare cases". There are many people who are employed or who are in school who, because of technical reasons, are not eligibile for coverage through their schools or places of employment. I, for instance, am one of those people. I am a struggling student in Boston who works part time. I live on my own and am paying my own way through school. Because I don't go to school full time, I am not eligible for health insurance through my college. Because I am only a part-time/per diem hospital employee, I am not eligible for health insurance through my job. I work at a major metropolitan hospital, but if I got hurt or sick, I didn't have the coverage to be treated there! But now, I do, thanks to the state's health care coverage program. This health care program is very similar to the one that Obama is proposing. It will help subscribers who have to pay for health insurance, by decreasing the demand for coverage, and thus, lowering the cost of insurance payments. And it will help families and individuals who have no insurance, to finally get some. The cost involved, as reflected in state tax would be barely noticeable. If the funding for this program was taken out of money that is being spent in other areas (ie.: the War), there may not even be a need to increase taxes in order to institute and maintain the program. And, as a result, a major step in social reform, and American progress, would be achieved. The reason many financial conservatives are against it, is because it makes a formerly lucrative business opportunity (insurance companies, pharmaceutical industries) decidedly less lucrative for investors. Oh, they say it's because they are opposed to raising the taxes, but really . . . yeah, it's all about big business.

how is Obama going to raise the $4.3 trillion dollars he intends to pay for his health insurance plans?

In addition he wants to double foreign aid, and all the other 175 programs he promised to expand. where will he get all this money? Obama's proposed tax hikes for the rich will only raise $30-$35 billion a year by 2012. Where is all of this money Obama promises coming from?

Hang on , I have to go back to work so i can pay my taxes.

Are there any (non-employer) health insurance options for early retirees?

My husband and I would love to plan for early retirement in a few years - the one obstacle seems to be health insurance. Neither of our employers provide health insurance after leaving the job (no matter when.) We will be in our late 50's (in a few years when we would like to retire) and have one 10yo child - could relocate if necessary after retirement. From what I've been reading it looks like family heath insurance costs are over $1000 per month! Any advice or direction is greatly appreciated!!
--------------------
Depending upon your health status and location you should be able to get a good comprehensive policy for less than $1000 per month. AARP writes their health insurance through United Health, which is a very good company and certainly worth a look. However, the policies have fewer benefits than most and the premium is nearly the same. You should visit a local independent agent. This person knows the market in your area and can compare the different plans (AARP included) and can suggest several plans that would be best for your situation. Medicare is not available until you reach 65 unless you've been disabled for 2 years.

Can anybody suggest a good pet health insurance?

Hi I am looking for some good vet insurance for my cat. I am low income and I want to. take my cat to the vet but can't afford it. I don't mind paying a monthly fee as long as it's affordable. I need one that will help pay the vet exam and etc. Thanks
--------------------
Check into Trupanion. I have my dog insured with them and it's a decent price and I know cats are even cheaper. You can also choose your own deductible from $0-1000 (which adjusts the premium) so you can make it fit your budget. They don't limit you per claim or per year (LOTS of companies do) but instead, they have a $20,000 lifetime limit. They also pay 90% of the actual bill, no benefits/fee schedules. Keep in mind that adding "routine coverage" (checkups/exams etc.) to your plan makes your monthly premium more expensive, so you are essentially just paying for your checkups through the premiums. Often, the insurance company charges a little extra to provide this service, so you're usually losing money. It's best to pay that stuff out of pocket and leave the insurance for accidents and illnesses. A good place to start learning about different companies is petinsurancereview.com Good luck!

For health benefits/insurance purposes, what are the ways you can prove someone is your domestic partner?

I know that some places make sure you have lived together for a period of time, but are there other ways that you can show that they are your partner for the benefits/insurance?
--------------------
To get my partner and our children on my insurance we had to provide the insurance company with a copy of our mortgage, and joint bank accounts, and copies of birth certificates for our children as well as have a signed and notarized affidavit that was provided by the insurance company. L

how are health insurance markets different from markets for other goods and services?

my mom is writing a report on this.
--------------------
One of the ways that health insurance markets are different from other markets is the way in which the cost of health insurance is so closely tied to the cost of health care - and more importantly the types of things that affect the cost of health care. One of the biggest contributors to the increasing cost of medical care is that no one knows how much anything costs and the majority of people that get medical care are not paying for the care (their insurance company is). In 1998 the normal cost of laser surgery was about $2200 per eye. Now it's close to $1350. It's no coincidence that this procedure is rarely covered by health insurance. Laser eye surgery is one of few health procedures sold in a free market with price advertising and consumer-driven purchases. One of the ways that people are trying to keep costs down is with Health Savings Accounts (HSA's). Here is more information on HSA's:

How much do you pay for health care insurance per month?

My company is about too drop my Blue Cross medical health care coverage. I am retired. I must now purchase health care if I can afford it. How much might I expect to pay for basic coverage on a monthly basis, or every three months?
--------------------
I used to have Blue Cross Blue Shield through my dad's work but when he died they took it away. Now I'm in college with no insurance. My mom is paying 550 (Humena I believe) a month for both herself and my little brother and she has almost no coverage. It really sucks.

Hello! I want to have barriatric surgery. OK not WANT but NEED. My doctor has advised that I definitely have it. But, my health insurance, MVP says that I have to go to a clinic, and lose 10% of my weight on my own first?! This to me seems ridiculous being that this is why people have the surgery to begin with, because we CANT on our own. Aside from that I have to see 3 doctors, a therapist, get letters written, etc! Has anyone else successfully gone through all of this? If so, how long did it take? Was it worth it? Do you have any advice? THANK YOU! I am totally postponing even begining faxing the papers into this clinic which is the 1st step because I forsee NEVER seeing a light @ the end of the tunnel. This seems impossible and I feel nearly hopeless yet my dr. said I have to?! I mean... help?? :( STUPID health insurance!!!!! :|

Need to learn how to verify health insurance benefits for an internist office .?

Just started a job and it is a new office-would like to learn how to verify health benefits and to do authorizations -Is there anyone out there that can give me some info on this??
--------------------
It's best to set up a verification sheet that has the pt's insurance name, id#'s, contact phone # (usualy found on the patients insurance card), who you spoke with there, effective date, co-pay amount (and if it's due for this type of visit) deductible (and amount met), co-insurance amount, out of pocket amount (and amount met). If pre-certification or authorization is needed for any procedures or diagnostic testing (this does not necessarily have to be done at the initial visit, only if a special test or procedure is ordered by the doctor.)Some insurance base this on the cost of the procedure (say over $1000) or if it's an out patient or in-patient procedure done in a hospital or out-patient surgery center. HMO's will almost always need prior auth from the pt's PCP. That way, this verification can be saved in the patients chart as documentation if any questions arise later.

Can I get birth control at Planned Parenthood without Health Insurance?

I'm getting married in 2 months and we we're thinking it might be cheaper to try and get birthy control from Planned Parenthood instead of paying insurace monthly AND getting birth control. Is this possible?
--------------------
Planned Parenthood does business based on your income. If you can't afford healthcare, then you can get birth control for Free including IUD's. If you have a healthcare provider already then even better. They'll take care of the costs. Planned Parenthood is very good about birth control, Call and talk to someone about it.

Would letter of creditability from a previous insurance carrier guarantee issue of health insurance?

A doctor left his job in another state and moved to Florida. The group insurance he had expired 20 days ago. The employer advised him he should be getting a "letter of creditability". Does this mean his pre existing condition will be covered with the new insurance company and they cannot deny him? thanks
--------------------
No. It guarantees only that if a policy is issued that will eventually cover the condition, then there will be no waiting period between when coverage starts and when coverage for the condition starts. it does not mean that a policy will be issued at all, and it does not mean that the policy will ever cover the condition.
