Can a person manage with NO health insurance? Or is this too scary?

I am 45 and currently have medical insurance. However am thinking of canceling it because I simply cannot afford it any longer. I am in good health and (I kid you NOT) did not have one medical visit for 2 years now. No meds either. I keep it in fear of something happening but then I figure $400 x 12 months? That would be 5K extra to help with other bills. Any input would be appreciated!
--------------------
Hi. Just wanted to share what happened to me last year. My husband lost a really good paying job when the company went out of business. They paid for insurance for the next 3 months, then after that it was so expensive for me to get it on my own ( $500.00 a month ), i figured i would just not get it. I haven't went to the doctor for the last 10 years, and i was in good health, so i wasn't worried at all. One month after going without insurance i started to lose weight very quickly for no reason. I dropped to 90 lbs. and was worried, so i went to the doctor. He felt a hugh mass in my abdomen, and sent me for a CT. Sure enough, it turned out to be cancer. With no insurance, i cannot get treatment, so i sit here everyday knowing i have cancer, and there's nothing i can do about it. Not getting insurance was a hugh mistake, which i now regret deeply. Your health is worth more then having that extra money. You never know what is going to happen ( i'm a good example of that ). I would never want somebody to go through what i have been through. By the way, i'm the same age as you are, and was healthy until now. Keep your insurance. Take care.

How does Obama plan on lowering the cost of health insurance for everyone?

Straight off of his website: "Require insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions so all Americans regardless of their health status or history can get comprehensive benefits at fair and stable premiums." Correct me if I'm wrong, but that would INCREASE the cost to insurance companies - which would in turn INCREASE everyone's premium. Does this man not know how insurance works??? http://www.barackobama.com/issues/health…
--------------------
the same way the military does. once again i will ask why not nonprofit insurance,? if criminals are not allowed to make money off their victims pain and suffering then why do we allow insurance companies to do the same? no one should be allowed to make a profit off of something as important as your health problems, just like once upon a time we did not allow mercenaries to fight our wars for profit, somethings should not be for profit but if you call yourself a christian then helping someone means you should not expect something back. but if someone should pay for it then lets look back at the good old lawyers that you probably hate who where the ones that went after the big tobacco companies that lied about how dangerous and addictive their tobacco is and made them pay the taxpayers back for all those years we took care of the cancer victims that we the taxpayers had to pay for in one way or another. and if you are looking for someone else to pay for this then how about the junk food industry? i am sure they don't tell us as to why they put addictive caffeine in a lot of their junk food. and why did they put all that trans fat in their food even though they knew it causes health problems.

Can I go to the USC Free Clinic without health insurance?

I might need surgery for an abdominal bulge that I'm afraid is a tumor but I have no health insurance. Can I go to the USC Free Clinic without insurance? If I need surgery, what happens if I don't have insurance?
--------------------
Call them, if they have a website surely they'll have contact infortmation! Just give them a call and tell them your situation, be honest, a lot of people don't have insurance these days...myself being one of them. Being a student without medical is tough, especially if you need medication or get sick pretty often. If they can't offer you their services, then ask them about suggestions on where to go. They should have info like that! If you want, you can even call your community college or ANY college for the matter and ask for the admin office. Talk to someone about student medical insurance and where you can go, also ask for student clinics for people without insurance. Colleges DEFINATELY have that info!

Why did J e s u s want to help poor and sick people? Why did he make health insurance?

make health insurance mandatory for Pharisees and Sadducees alike, so that that those unfortunate could also get a free ride? He could have made a good profit from health insurance companies by charging fees for his healing of the many, yet Jesus chose to establish health insurance exchange in the Temple and made his followers to go to the Temple and purchase health insurance from the wealthy merchants operating there under the threat of crucifixion of those who don't.

Did anyone notice that Americans who have government health insurance seem to be very happy with it?

My observation is that people who have government health insurance (Medicare, military insurance, teachers, police, and other government workers) are much more satisfied with their health care than people with private insurance. Wouldn't this suggest that implementing government health care for the rest of the population will result in higher satisfaction?
--------------------
First of all, Obama is not going to bring in universal healthcare. He wants to make insurance more available to all. Second, of course universal health-cover sucks. That is why we in Western Europe have it. We think, hmm, our healthcare system sucks. I know, lets keep it. I guess that is the same with Japan and Canada as well. FACT - the USA spends more on healthcare PER PERSON than any other nation on the planet. FACT - the US has higher death rates for kids aged under five than western European countries with universal health coverage. That means that a dead American four year old would have had a better chance of life if they were born in Canada, France, Cuba, Germany, Japan etc, all of which have universal health coverage.

Do health insurance companies affect the cost of healthcare or healthcare affect the cost?

of insurance? people say healthcare and health insurance like its the same thing.
--------------------
They are symbiotic in a way...But healthcare costs effect the cost of health insurance. Even though the water is a little muddy, it's like saying does my car make my insurance more expensive or does my insurance make my car more expensive. Generally consumption drives the cost of healthcare...and the single largest problem facing this country is the huge number of people who receive treatment without insurance. People both legal and illegal go into ER's every week and get free worldclass healthcare....but since they simply shrugg off the bill and accept the bad credit score....the cost of their procedure is born by those who have health insurance. Insurance is basically a large pool of money where only those who need to draw from the pot....it is a collective revenue pool made up of thousands if not millions of people who each make contributions monthly or annually or whatever....when someone gets sick or needs to go to the doctor...they draw a little money out of that pool to help them pay for it. The problem with the Obama plan is that he proposes between 30 and 45 million non-contributing members to the ranks.....all these peoples expenses will be born by the rest of us since they will not be making contributions. Obama and Baucus are combating this revenue problem by forcing young people between 18 and 30 who typically do not buy insurance to do so. These millions of healthy people making contributions will be the revenue pool that Obama uses to pay for the medical bills of the medicare members and the non-contributing lower class members. And they are young and healthy so they will not drain the revenue pool. It is an age old trick of politicians to take money from the young and give it to the old....they are already doing that with social security....what Obama is proposing isn't change....its the same ol same ol with some really fancy smoke mirrors and window dressing. Insurance only effects cost when you have insurance like Medicare which won't pay the full amount....Obama's medicare plan proposes to make even more cuts to medicare to the tune of 500 Billion dollars...when Medicare is already a program that sets limits on compensation....so those expenses that Medicare doesn't provide for are in turn rolled over into the private market. Obama is exploiting a terribly complex situation by keeping it terribly complex when in fact all he is doing is transferring the burden onto young people and private insurers so that he can enroll 30 million non-contributing members and continue to get votes of elderly by keeping medicare running (which is about twenty years from destroying our economy) but placing the bulk of the costs on private insurers. Then he includes a public options that takes on a small minority of people who MUST contribute to the plan....and when the private market insurers start to crumble under the weight of all the burdens Obama has placed on them and the young of this country....Everyone will be routed to the Public Option....and he will realize the Single Payer system that he envisions. It doesn;t have to be complicated...he wants it to stay complicated...because it is easier to obfuscate the truth on something people don't understand. Young people will pay more.....private insurers will pay more...the government will pay less...and less...and transfer those costs onto the private market.....once the private markets starts to crumble...they route everybody onto this contentiously debated PUBLIC OPTION.....OPTION IS A NICE CONVINCING WORD DON'T YOU THINK? YOUNG PEOPLE VOTED HIM INTO OFFICE BUT THEY ARE THE FAT DONATORS AND DONT PULL LEVERS OF POWER SO THEY ARE GONNA GET SOAKED ON THIS HEALTHCARE PLAN.

Will Republicans come around and offer honest input into Universal Health Insurance?

So far there policy of obstruction has done very little to stop anything in the Democratic agenda from passing. Will they come around for health care insurance or will they continue to be the party of "No"?
--------------------
Apparently the typical Yahoo Republican lacks a brain. Universal Insurance as laid out by Obama is very similar to the Massachusettsplan passed by Republican Mitt Romney. It is run by Private Insurance co's. There is no National Health care policy in the works. I do not see them coming around to anything, that is like asking a child what they want to eat for supper, of course they will choose things that are no good for them. The Democrats of course can ask but in the end it will pass like everything else down party lines as they have no intention of doing anything to better America.

Is there a health insurance plan in California equivalent to Any Any Any?

I don't have health insurance and am self-employed and trying to figure out my options...
--------------------
You need a trusted adviser to help you through the process of purchasing health insurance so that you understand what you are purchasing. Ultimately, you are the one who determines the affordability of your health insurance plan by deciding how much you will participate in sharing the cost of your health care with your insurance company. You decide what the right balance is between affordability and policy benefits. If you choose a plan that covers everything i.e. doctors office visits, prescription drugs, preventative health benefits, maternity coverage as well as low deductibles, low co-pays and optional vision and dental benefits your monthly premiums will be significant. On the other hand if you are young, healthy and don't often use the health care system you could consider a plan that covers only the major health catastrophe. If that is too scary consider a plan with a higher in hospital deductible, higher co-pays for doctor's office visits and perhaps not cover prescription drugs.. Either of these approaches will result in a lower monthly premium. You then can use the monthly premium savings to pay for the occasional doctor visit or prescription and still come out ahead. Check with the agent that writes your home or auto insurance he/she can provide you a health insurance proposal that takes into account your budget and health status. They can answer questions as to what is and is not covered by the policy, explain deductibles and co-pays and show you the hospitals and doctors that participate in the network. Some are going to suggest you go to their web site so that they earn a few pennies on a "click through". Some may suggest going on line to get a quote but you probably already know that there is much more to health insurance than price. Some might even "pitch" a discount plan that is not insurance at all. Use the Internet to educate yourself but use an agent to purchase the coverage.

Is there an affordable health insurance plan?

Hey, I'm 17 years old and I have a baby. We both have MOLINA insurance. But my boyfriend who's 19 doesnt have any health insurance. He works full time and is about to be going to college part time. Well his wisdom teeth are coming in crooked and he cant get them fixed because it costs so much. Is there any health insurance plan that wont cost us an arm and a leg? And doesnt have a catch?
--------------------
If he works full time, he can check to see if he is eligible for insurance through the company he works for. This will be much cheaper than trying to buy it on his own, because a company gets a group rate. However, you would need to see if dental is covered under that plan. Another option is Care Credit http://www.carecredit.com/ and set up a payment plan.

College student finding health insurance in california?

I'm a college student in california who needs to find a replacement for the health insurance offered by the school. I was thinking about going with tonik.
--------------------
There are two kinds of long term care insurances the individual long term care and the group long term care, as the names suggest the individual long term care insurance involves the insurer and the insured person. These kind of individual health policies need to be approved by the California department of insurance. Where as group health policy involves a group and the insurer. Normally group insurances are always priced less than the individual policies. The same applies here too.

How Much Do Americans Have to Pay for Health Insurance?

Coming from the UK I sort of find it hard to imagine having to pay out for your own health care . . . but how much does the average American in reasonable health have to pay for insurance, and what happens if you don't have it?
--------------------
Health care insurance rates in the US are very complicated. you can be part of a Health Maintainence Organization, the rates for this insurance are the cheapest but the levels of care can be lower. You have to see your designated primary care clinic before you can go to a specialist. The main goal of this form of insurance is to keep health care cost low while maintaining health. Then there are PPOs that means the insurance company has a list of preferred providers for each specialty and you can choose who to see off the list. This is more expensive than an HMO but not as expensive as traditional US health insurance. There is more choice but also more cost. Finally, there is traditional health insurance where you pay the highest premiums but you pick whoever you want to see and go to them. Unlimited choice highest cost. Usually the employer has one or more health care insurance plans available for the employees and makes a contribution to the insurance. The amount of employer contribution is sometimes set by company policy but other times is a negotiable benefit. There are plans for the poor, unemployed, disabled and retired. These are Medicaid for the indigent and Medicare for the disabled and retired population. The government pays for medicaid out of taxes, and everyone working pays a payroll deduction towards medicare. There are also many persons who are employed, making above the indigent level, but not enough to cover health insurance or they are part time and not eligible for company benefits. This is the problem area for US healthcare. This part of the population often ends up losing their prperty etc in order to pay medical bills. Additionally, as most health insurance only pays for 80% of "allowable" claims there are many health care cost not covered. I am taking a medication which is given IV over a period of 8 hours. At first I took it daily, then weeekly and now I am taking it once a month. It cost $5,000.00 US dollars per day for the treatment. Medicare my primary insurance does not allow for any of the expense. My secondary insurance will cover 80% and after I pay $3000.00 per year it picks up 100%. I am lucky! I am covered by Medicare due to a permanent disability which prevents me from going to work, as well as I am covered by insurance through the US military as I am retired from the Army and a disabled veteran. I am supposed to get free healthcare at the military hospitals, but they are overtasked with the injured soldiers returning from Iraq etc. To give you a hint, the average family of 4 will pay over $400.00 per month on thop of the employer contribution for a PPO insurance plan.

i am 3 months pregant, I dont have a health insurance?

I have no job. I want to buy an indival health insurance, is there any health insurance company will accept to cover my maternity expenses ?
--------------------
You are NOT s.o.l Most insurance companies do not consider pregnancy a pre-existing condition. Where do you live? Kaiser is a good option, usually the cheapest you can get on your own. Also, look into the state you live in. Most states will cover prenatal care, delivery and then insurance for the baby. Good luck!

I forgot to add my health insurance premiums on my 2007 taxes can I make up for it on my 2008 taxes?

When I filed my 2007 tax return, I forgot to add in my health insurance premiums, can I put that into my 2008 tax returns? both 2007 and 2008 health insurance premiums?
--------------------
No you can not make up for errors on your 2007 return by making up for the error on your 2008 return. You would have to file an 2007 amended return (1040X). I doubt that it is going to be worthwhile. Health insurance premiums are deductions from taxable income not tax credits applied to your calculated tax liability. Plus your medical deductions must exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income to have any effect on your final tax calculation. That being said don't take my word for it. I am advising you based on typical circumstances. I don't know the specifics of your taxable income or the extent of your schedule A itemized deductions. Always seek professional guidance.

What you need to find out is if the companies "coordinate benefits". Call the company and ask. If they do, then the answer to your question is yes. If they don't, then the answer is no. Hope this helps!
