Medicare or other affordable health insurance?

I live in NYC, just moved here and need to find relatively affordable health insurance. Up till now was covered by plans through employers. Is Medicare decent coverage? Is it very different from others?
--------------------
Zippy is right on this one. You are not eligible for Medicare unless you are 65 or older, or are disabled, or have been diagnosed with renal failure. If none of these 3 apply, you cannot get Medicare coverage. Medicaid is a program administered jointly by the State and Federal government. You must meet certain income guidelines in order to qualify. If you are not employed and are looking for individual coverage, I suggest that you contact one of the big insurance carriers in NY, like Empire BC/BS, HIP of NY, to see what products they have available to individuals.

I need a health insurance that covers pre-existing conditions? My work doesn't offer insurance.?

I'm a healthy person but I need depression and anxiety medication. I need a health insurance that can help me out with the costs of my medication and my office visits. I also have a regular doctor I need to go to for some side effects that my medicine causes me. I just have no idea what health insurance to get.
--------------------
Try this one - http://healthplans.my-age.net - my family have their health insurance - it is affordable and has good coverage for dental issues. As I know they can provide coverage with preexisting condition.

Obama or McCain - Who is more likely to cause employers to drop health care insurance for employees? ?

Who is more likely to make health insurance unaffordable for really sick people?
--------------------
Obama will because McCain is not going to have the opportunity to do it.

I am getting married soon. What is the best health insurance for my wife and I? (We are 23 and 21 years old)?

I am getting married soon. What is the best health insurance for my wife and I? We are 23 and 21 years old, I am in school part time, we will probably both be full-time in January. Obviously we can't afford much. What are our best options?
--------------------
Use Salt Lake City as an example location, the least expensive policies for your ages are Autograph Total/5200 HSA from Humana and Evolve Core $10000 Participating Network from Regence BCBS.

What did Bush say about health insurance?

I think I heard him say that he wants to give tax breaks to the people who have health insurance, but, did he say anything about the people who aren't able to afford it at all?
--------------------
Basically, he plans to tax people - the middle class - who already have insurance through their employers, to finance insurance for people who don't have insurance. What it will do is force many employers to drop their health insurance programs thereby creating even MORE uninsured people. Gotta be the dumbest domestic plan he ever had.

I'm looking for health insurance for a 63 yr old female?

Looking for health insurance for a 63 yr old female, who is unemployed and currently disabled? Anyone know of any good plans that don't cost a fortune.
--------------------
Welfare - Medicaid. Or Medicare, if she's on SSDI. Most states, she's flat out uninsurable, because she's unhealthy enough to be disabled. Plus, even if she was perfectly healthy, and not overweight, at her age it's reasonable to expect to pay $600 to $800 a month for health insurance. She's going to need to talk to a local broker, to see what her options are. Besides welfare health insurance (medicaid or medicare), she can check to see if there's a high risk health pool in your state, or what the other options might be. Health insurance options are HIGHLY state specific. You're not going to find anything online.

So if the cons didn't want the government to manage health insurance because they would botch it?

would they like BP to run their health insurance?
--------------------
Cons have tried every way they can think of to thwart every American receiving the same Healthcare their CEOs receive: 1. "I don't want some government bureaucrat deciding what treatments I can get"- Of course, having some Insurance bureaucrat decide to deny their treatment just as a general rule is evidently okay with them. When it's the government doing it, there's no profit incentive to deny benefits, therefore, people will receive the treatments they require. 2. "Death Panels"- Same as above. When someone at Aetna is killing one of their customers by deciding not to continue cancer treatments, or denying someone a new kidney, or whatever (in the name of profits). Why is it ok to pay a CEO millions he or she didn't earn to do the same thing? 3. "Look at Canada's Healthcare"- Yes LOOK at it. Americans live shorter lives, our infant mortality rate is higher, cholesterol, BP and heart disease are higher, we are more obese and have more strokes and diabetes than Canada, France, Italy and most every other country with universal health care has. OBVIOUSLY we are doing something wrong here, and it is, in part, the fact that health care in the US is a "For Profit" business. 4. "America has the best health care in the world"- This sounds all patriotic, but it is, of course, patently untrue. It has the best if you can AFFORD it, it has the best of you have millions to THROW at whatever is ailing you, but the average person on the street, working two jobs to make ends meet, deciding between a prescription drug or food for the week, while Upjohn posts RECORD earnings every quarter, is not and can not be considered a sane system of health care. So yeah, put BP in charge of health care. It's no less insane than George W. Bush, a man who not only avoided service in Vietnam, but deserted his post, calling himself a "War President", and the right wing sheeple buying into it.

What is the best health insurance plan for a healthy family of 3?

It's me, my wife and my daughter. My wife and I are both self employed, and we live in Michigan. We would like to have some kind of basic coverage in case we need to go to the Emergency Room. Who can we call and ask? Which insurance company gives the best deal? Should we buy cathastrophic insurance only?
--------------------
You should NOT by a catastrophic plan or hospital only plan. They are ridiculous plans. ALWAYS buy a comprehensive plan and if you want to lower the premium then up the deductible. There is NO reason whatsoever that you would, for example, want an insurance policy to pay your $100,000 bill if you had a heart attack (and went to a hospital), but NOT pay for your $100,000 bill if you got cancer (no hospital). It's a ridiculous premise and they save very little money. You SHOULD buy insurance through an insurance broker that does business in your state. You just need to give your information to the insurance broker and they should run through the hundreds of plans that are available to you and narrow it down for you. That's what good insurance brokers do. In the last week I've sold plans with Aetna, Humana, United, BlueCross and Assurant...there is no 'best.' It depends on too many factors to determine which company works for you.

Is health Insurance a boon or a bane?

Extreme Unethicalness in treatment, fake surgeries, bloated medicine prices by Hospitals (Fake MRP prices in collusion with manufacturers) backed by Insurance companies who happily pay. A triumvirate of 1. Doctors/ Hospitals 2. Medical manufactureres 3. Health Insurance Please answer: 1. Do Doctors Live off the Miseries of People? 2. Is health Insurance a boon or a bane? 3. Should Medical manufactureres/ Scanning & testing centers pay commissions to doctors?
--------------------
1. Yes, Yes , Yes - 2. A bane as doctors think it belongs to them, why else do they keep 2 days req patient for 1 week, do all the tests possible. 3. Yes all commisions should be tracked and made a criminal breach by government. Why else is at the same place a CT scan 2,200 & 3,200 when ref by diff doctors. Docs ref even if not necessary so they pocket the commisons.

Is buying health insurance online a good idea?

What has your experience been? Did you save money and still get good benefits and service?
--------------------
Of course I'm biased because that's what I do, BUT to be clear you're not saving any money buying from my website over sitting across the desk from me. Insurance is a regulated industry and it does not matter how you buy it and health insurance shouldn't be so complicated that you need to meet with anybody to do it. I have clients around the world and right down the street and even the ones that are close by handle everything via the phone and Internet. People buy from an Internet site because it's convenient. You want to make sure you're buying from someone that does what I do. Don't go to a big firm because then you're just dealing with a customer service representative and not building a lasting relationship with an advocate that can help you. To MAKE SURE you're buying from someone reputable look at the 'About Us' section of their web site. If you can't find a physical address then don't use them, call them on the phone as well and feel them out. Finally look around the site for information. MANY sites simply gather your information to sell to agents to call you. In that case you have no idea who you're dealing with. So, if the site doesn't provide much information about the products you're looking for then it's likely just a site to capture your information. Do business with a broker and do it online or over the phone if that works for you. Also, finally everything that's good online is available offline as well. There is NO difference in the products. It's just the easier way to transact the business. AND, make no mistake that applications done online WILL BE FASTER to the tune of at least two weeks off the underwriting time (of course that differs company to company). United Healthcare can underwrite an online application in as quick as 24-48 hours. If you mail in an application it won't even arrive in their mailbox that fast. Lastly make sure you're comparing multiple companies with someone you can trust. (PS I've never seen a Nigerian health insurance company....shaking head and rolling eyes....)

Where can I go to get my eyes checked when I don't have health insurance?

For the past few weeks I have been having vision problems in one eye, not all the time but I will get blurry vision and the eye will water when I'm say, looking at the computer screen for more than a short period of time, and when I don't feel pressure/have the blurry vision it seems like I am looking more with my 'good eye' if that makes sense. I don't have health insurance (between jobs) and was wondering if anyone had any experience with low cost eye doctors in the southern California area. I can afford a little bit but money is tight...but the problem is not going away and I feel I should get it checked out. Thanks so much to all who have some ideas.
--------------------
It's possible to get help through some of the agencies noted above, but there is usually a lot of red tape and waiting involved. I would call around to ask various optometrists what they charge for a basic eye exam - I know mine (I don't have vision insurance either) usually runs about 60 dollars. Some Walmarts have optometrist with fairly low charges. A basic exam would at least let you know if you have anything to really worry about. If you need further treatment, maybe you can work out some type of payment plan. Best of luck to you in whatever you decide.

Can we have double health insurance, one of them being Cobra?

My husband was laid off and we went on cobra, in the mean time we found out our son needs tubes in his ears. The surgery is September 3rd and now my husband got a job and insurance will go into effect Set. 1. We are worried that they may consider this a preexisting condition and that our doctors may not be in the new network. We are wondering if we may have to reschedule the surgery for when we are more established with the new insurance.
--------------------
As long as you keep the COBRA until the new plan goes into effect, then it's not considered a preexisting condition. You don't need to keep two plans. You'll have to see if the docs are still in network, though.

I need health insurance for my baby when she is born. Where is the best and cheapest place to look?

I am already coverd by my employer, they do not offer to pay for my child and I am not qualified for state assistance. I am 30 weeks and I am worried that my child will not have coverage when she is born and I will not be able to afford medical help. I dont even know where to begin.
--------------------
check to see if your state has insurance for mid-income families. california has healthy families for those that don't qualify for no cost medi-cal(medicaid). just pay a monthly fee which is $15 for me and a $5 copay. go to wherever you would apply for medicaid, food stamps, whatever it is and ask to speak to a worker to see if they have anything available like that. or search for your state website and see if your state provides anything like that.

Why do people who cannot afford health insurance think this way?

"then she revealed to us that she did not have insurance and neither did any of her children. She proudly boasted that if anyone in her family got sick they would not expect help from anyone else, they would get through it on their own"
--------------------
People who cannot afford basic needs for their children should be castrated.

Why do health insurance companies cover drugs like Viagra but not birth control pills?

I know life isn't fair but this seems like a truly unfair and sexist practice.
--------------------
It doesn't work the way you described. EVERY health insurance company CAN cover things like Viagra AND birth control pills, and abortion, and maternity for that matter. Some employers choose NOT to purchase those coverages, from the insurance company, when they take out their group plans. It's like a menu, and the person who buys the policy, picks which coverages they want to buy. Nothing sexist or unfair about it, it's all about COST.

Once diagnosed with cancer, how difficult is it to change employers & obtain new health insurance?

Also, once diagnosed can you increase your life insurance coverage?
--------------------
As a clarification to "Deep's" answer, your previous health insurance must have been group-based and not have been lapsed for more than 63 (not 60) days. There is no requirement that your previous group health insurance have lasted 2 years; typically, in a group health insurance situation, the pre-existing exclusionary period isn't more than 6 or 12 months (depending on the circumstances), so that's all the previous "creditable coverage" you need to cancel it out. Employers have no right to know your health history prior to, or after, your hire. Also, group life insurance typically will provide a dollar amount of insurance an employee qualifies for without having to provide "evidence of insurability." Above this amount, you will have to provide details regarding your health history. Most insurers to not set a "5-year limit" on cancer patients before they qualify for insurance. Because all types of cancers are different, and because cancers have different stages of progression within an individual, it's not accurate to state there's one time limitation that applies to all patients. A person who had stage 1 basal cell carcinoma, fully excised and fully healed, will become insurable much sooner than 5 years. However, a person who had oat cell carcinoma of the lung, stage 2, may never be insurable. To get correct facts regarding HIPAA, I suggest you read this booklet published by the Dept. of Health and Human Services for more information: http://www.cms.hhs.gov/HealthInsReformfo… I hope this helps.

Can a health insurance company take more money from your salary, despite not having a contract with them?

Would prefer a little more than a yes or no answer.
--------------------
No, they can't access your paycheck without a court order. But, if it's your EMPLOYER taking the money from your paycheck, to forward to the health insurance company, yes, they can. Employers aren't required to contribute ANYTHING towards your insurance. They can change how much they contribute (thus changing how much you have to pay) with no notice. And they don't have to notify you if the insurance company's rate goes up, either.
