Why is health insurance so cheap in this country despite what libs say?

Had to get my own policy last year, all they did was ask my name, my age: 22 at the time; previous medical problems: none, and they signed me up for coverage for less than $100 per month, a bargain if you ask me, so why are these whiny libs always going on about how expensive insurance is if it only costs less than $100 to buy health insurance?
--------------------
I'm sure you don't have much coverage paying that amount. Average is around 300 a month for a single person.

Can someone sue my parents if they pay my health insurance and I get into a car accident?

My insurance agent said that if I am in an accident and my parents pay my health insurance then someone can sue them. He said it does not matter if I have my own car and car insurance policy and am not a minor. Is it true that if my parents pay my health insurance they are putting themselves at risk?
--------------------
Car insurance and health insurance are two different things. If you are injured in an auto accident it is the car insurance that has presidence. Get a different insurance agent.

Did you know health insurance bill will force premiums to rise or health insurance companies out of business?

Right Now health insurance companies make 3% profit 3% people that's with ability to drop coverages and not accept pre existing conditions it is sad but true now how will they continue to operate under the new law?
--------------------
Keep on fighting!!! But know that since ACORN had a massive layoff the Koolaid is extra-strength around here these days. Insurance companies and Wall Street are the administration's enemies, and they have taught their students well.

What kinds of jobs in the United States don't offer their employees health insurance?

As in, a health insurance plan is part of their pay deal etc. Just curious really.
--------------------
non-skilled labor, child care, part time work, those kinds of things. The issue isn't really not being offered healthcare from your employer, it's not being able to afford the premiums and deductibles on a minimum wage salary. A worker can be offered insurance from their employer, but it may cost too much of their paycheck. So then it becomes a choice between food for dinner or healthcare

How can my mother-in-law become our dependent and get put on our health insurance?

Is there any way that my mother-in-law can quit working right now and move in with us and become our dependent and therefore be put on our health insurance, etc...She currently has I think between 6 months to 1.5 years left before she can retire, but she makes only $18k/year, so she might as well not be working. She has tremendous arthritis and really shouldn't be working. She works "part-time", but is made to work full time hours. Go figure. Anyone know the answer to this?
--------------------
It really depends on the policies of your health insurer if you could add a parent, so you should call them. She should consider looking into getting disability from the social security office (1-800-772-1213). Also, if she has little money, she may also qualify for Medicaid.

I have no health insurance or job at the moment and want to get a check up at Planned Parenthood. Help?

I'm 22 years old and was just laid off from my job. I have no health insurance and don't want to be a burden on my parents since they're having money issues with my dad injuring himself at work. I would like to go in and have a gynecological exam. Will I be able to have this exam with little to no cost at Planned Parenthood? I'm currently seeking employment but am not having much luck, so that means no health insurance for quite some time.
--------------------
Yes you can go see them. They will give you a form to fill out and they'll want to know your employment status, student status etc. They'll ask how much money a week you're making and if it's low enough, the exam will be free.

If I get employer-provided health insurance, will I still have any freedom to choose what kind I want?

Say that I get a job, and one of my benefits as an employee is health insurance. Does this mean that I either have to (1) accept the employer's health insurance unconditionally or (2) refuse and find an insurance company to get health insurance from OR, are people able to negotiate what kind of insurance they want with their employers? Or do some companies allow negotiation and others don't? I don't get it. Does accepting employer-provided health insurance mean you lose freedom to choose or something? Thanks.
--------------------
I would strongly recommend you NOT refuse the generous group health insurance your employer is providing at a time of recession. I say "generous" because many employers do not offer insurance. I say "generous" because with group health you will be accepted unconditionally. I say "generous" because the premium you will pay with your group plan will pale in comparison to the exhorbitant premiums charged pay personal insurance. I say "generous" because your employer is likely off-setting some of the costs of your insurance coverage. With personal health insurance, you may not be accepted if you have pre-existing conditions. Your usage of the insurance will be reported to a subscription service called the Medical Information Bureau. The insurance company considers YOU the risk factor (not a group of people), and therefore can nit-pick what they will pay for you, and what they will not. And they will cancel you faster than a heart beat if you get sick. Freedom has it's price, and with health insurance, it's an EXTREMELY high price to pay to refuse a company-sponsored health plan in exchange for the meager rations of care you will receive on a personal health insurance plan.

Which entry level part time jobs do you know offer health insurance? Even if it doesn't start immediately?

I absolutely have to find a job like this. The wage is not a key concern right now. [My financial & life situation is super-duper-mind-numbingly-complicated. Trust me, this is going to be my only alternative for maintaining coverage for my 3 school age kids & me. No need to point me toward government resources or other ideas for getting health insurance. Really. I just need job info.] Thanks so much.

I believe that that Starbucks Coffee offers medical insurance for employees who work 20 hours or more a week. They have lots of stores and seem to always be hiring so you might want to give this a shot (no pun intended :).

In many cases an employer gives you a chance to review a few different plans. Then you pick the one that best fits your needs. It will be your choice. Unfortunately, each plan has goods and bads and you need to compare each closely. Remember the more you want the pricier they get. This is not much different then if you went out to get a plan yourself.

Are you one of the many Americans without health insurance? and if you are what are we going to do?

I'm a single mother of three boys and I run my own farm and I have no insurance, not beacuse of the money but because many health insurance compaines will not accept my youngest child with Epliepsy,so what are we americans do to .The rich and the poor will and have suffered, what next?
--------------------
I have no idea. I am in the boat of being self-employed and I make like $300.oo too much a year to qualify for any assistance, though my insurance policy was over $600 a month! Yet, I see scumbags collecting check after check each month and having more and more children because then they get a bigger check. To me it is frusrating and nausiating. I think the first thing we need to do is get rid of the current president who is sending BILLIONS of dollars to other countries and not looking at his own countries problems. (healthcare) I don't know how to answer your question, but I do feel your frustration

In Australia, under the public health care system, it shouldn't cost you a cent.

Do I need travel insurance or health insurance to go from Canada to the USA?

I know its in the wrong section but I'm a really good answerer and please just answer it'll only take a minute. Thank you, love you all :) If I decide to go to the states, on a whim, is it mandatory or just suggested that i have travel and health insurance? I am 18 years old, a legal adult.
--------------------
it is strongly recommended because in case you get in to the hospital with an emergency they will not treat you unless you can provide payment. Here is a link where you acutely purchase it http://www.travelexinsurance.com/index.aspx?location=32-0069&go=pmts Good Luck!!

Employers will get rid of the expense and let the government take it from you in increased taxes and decreased levels of service. It makes no business sense to pay for private insurance and for public insurance at the same time. Since government insurance is going to be mandatory, then business will simply stop paying for the private stuff. Ultimately, it is money that your employer will not be able to give to you to do as you choose. The healthy will pay for the sickly.

If i pay health insurance for my daughter, can that be a write-off on my taxes?

I pay health insurance, deducted from my paycheck at work, for my daughter. Can I claim that on my taxes as a deduction?
--------------------
If it comes outof your paycheck, then it is eligible to be deducted on a pretax basis, under section 125 of the IRS code. If it comes out before tax, you cannot deduct it because you already have gotten the benefit of deducting it for tax purposes. If it comes out after tax, current laws do not allow you to deduct the premium from your tax return. This is something that has been proposed, but has not been passed into law yet.

how do health insurance companies make make money?

I have to write a research paper about the health insurance companies and I have many questions to answer within my paper. I am stuck on these two questions can anyone help me please? Please cite you sources thanks. how do health insurance companies make make money? What kind of problems are health insurance companies facing?
--------------------
Health insurance companies make the majority of their money, from investment income from the "reserves" they invest. They only make about 2% off of the premiums they charge to their policyholders. The biggest problems, are increasing claims costs, increasing medical identity fraud, and increasing governmental regulation.

Can a condition make you ineligible for individual health insurance, yet accepted under group employer plans?

. . . in some states? Thus in effect stating that if you're good enough to be employed (at an employer that still offers health insurance), then you have to be health-insurable.
--------------------
Yes, individual plans are harder to qualify for. Employer contracts with insurers generally require all employees to be accepted for coverage

Republicans whats the difference between being forced to buy health insurance and car insurance?

If it is unconstitutional to force some to buy to health insurance how is it constitutional to force people to buy car insurance??
--------------------
You're not being forced to buy a car and participate in mandatory insurance. Also, it's a State issue, as health insurance should be.

Why does the Right LOVE health care insurance companies?

I can only guess that millions of dollars have gone into the campaign funds of GOP candidates from the health insurance lobby. And, what good does this industry do? Its a wonderful deal they have going on. A monthly recuring revenue stream of insurance premiums and all they have to do is deny as much coverage as necessary to make a profit. The service they provide is an artificial requirement because of the idiotic way payment for our health system is handled.
--------------------
because if you tell a conservative it's the "free market"... you can price gouge them all day and they won't care in the least... remember ENRON?

A question about the health insurance reform bill?

Does anyone know that if the health insurance reform bill passes whether or not you have to get your own insurance, even if you are on your spouse's plan? If you could cite your source(s), that would be really helpful. Thanks!
--------------------
As written now you will have coverage via your spouse's insurance. The requirement is that you are covered by an insurance policy. There is still a lot of wrangling before this gets through so stay tuned.

how do you get health insurance for a person with a history of cancer?

my dads cancer is in remission. The Dr. told him his lungs are no good. He has no insurance to pay for home health sevices. Is there a company that will provide insurance to a person with a history of cancer and will be exspensive?
--------------------
Unfortunately, different insurance companies follow different guidelines. The only way to have COBRA is if he had worked and is still paying his premiums out of pocket. Even then most COBRA plans do not extend beyond around 12 months. You would have to call your local health insurance companies and find out if they accept people who have 'pre-existing' conditions. There are some out there, it is a matter of your locale. Good luck. NREMT-P
