If I bought health insurance today, how soon could in go into effect?

Also, how do insurance companies determine whether a condition is pre-existing or not?
--------------------
Each policy is different, so you will have to ask the agent. In the case of pre-existing conditions, they usually ask you to disclose things up front. If they get a claim for a diagnosis that is often pre-existing, they will request medical records to determine whether you were previously treated for the condition.

Hello, I will be 23 years old in August and will be attending medical school in Ohio. The insurance my parents have will only cover me until I am 23 or I stop school. I have heard that insurance companies must cover you till 24 in Ohio is this true? Also the new budget compromise that just went in Ohio bumps the age to 29 for dependents, when does this go into effect. Please post the best reliable link with this information for 10 pts!

When does my health insurance expire after quitting Costco?

I quit on July 28th, 2008. Does it expire at the end of the quarter? Or did it expire at the end of the pay period or end of the month? The insurance is with Aetna if that helps at all.
--------------------
It's either July 29th, or July 31st. Your HR department should let you know - it's not about Aetna, it depends on how the policy was set up, when Costco bought it. BUT, they should be offering you COBRA coverage, allowing you to continue the insurance, at YOUR cost.

Can I use moms health insurance?

My mother plans to not claim me as a dependent this year ( I am eligible to claim myself). Can I still be on her health insurance if she is not claiming me? She says I can't be on her health insurance because she's not claiming me, not sure if that's right..... Thanks!
--------------------
It is possible that your mom is correct. If her plan specifically states that a child must be claimed for tax purposes to be a dependent on the policy, then you would not be eligible if she didn't claim you on her taxes. I work on dependent audits, and I have had to request tax returns from people to prove that their dependents are still eligible. I've also had to remove children from health insurance policies for not being claimed on taxes, if the rules of the policy state that a dependent must be on your taxes. It is true that many employers don't have that requirement. However, if your mom's employer does, then you can't stay on the policy if you're not on the taxes

What do I do if I dont have health insurance but I really need to go to the dr.?

I have applied for assistance and was denied because my boyfriend makes too much money but we can't afford $900 a mo. for insurance because of a pre-existing condition. I have had problems with my gull bladder, and lately I have been having severe pains in my stomache and have been the ER but they don't do anything for me (probably because I dont have insurance) but send me home with some pain meds. PLEASE HELP ME
--------------------
Well, is $900 a month more experience than several thousands of dollars in medical debt from your ER visits?

What are "for profit" health insurance companies?

please briefly explain what they are and what they do, because i don't understand the difference between for profit and non-profit.
--------------------
There is no difference. Everybody works for profit. If you hear "non-profit," it means that they have some sort of preferential treatment when it comes to taxes. A "non-profit" company couldn't exist. How could it pay the rent, pay its employees, etc.? With what money? Profit is what is left over after you have covered your costs. So, if they make a penny, they are "for-profit," Don't believe anything anyone else tells you otherwise. It's economic ignorance.

Getting daughter on health insurance?

The state is court ordering my bf to put our daughter on his health insurance or a different one, she is currently on medicaid. He's asking me to put her on it so they don't have to go to court but I'm not quite sure how to go about doing that i've never had to switch an insurance provider before. The insurance issomething called Coxhealth...individual ppo somethin rather idk. I'm a bit confused on how to get her off medicaid and onto this other health insurance. Any suggestions?
--------------------
First, the insurance company is Cox Healthplans. CoxHealth is something else. Second, if the daughter is a newborn or an adoptee and it is an individual plan (not a group plan), go to http://www.coxhealthplans.com/pages/js/p… print the form, complete section I, skip section 2, check box B in section III, complete sections IV and V. Send them the form. They will do section VI. Third, if it is a group plan from work (either your job or his), go to http://www.coxhealthplans.com/pages/js/p… print the form, complete Section A, check box "Add Dependents" in Section B, in Section C check whichever box on line one applies and either "employee & child(ren)" (does not cover employee's spouse) or "employee & family" (covers children and spouse) on line 2, skip section D, complete section E through the end of the form, and ask HR whether you give it to them or mail it to Cox yourself. If it is an individual plan (not a group plan) and the daughter is not a newborn or an adoptee, I do not know. Call Cox and ask them. Their phone numbers are: Marketing: Phone: 417-269-4679 or 1-800-664-1244 Fax: 417-269-4667 E-Mail: grouphealth@coxhealthplans.com Member Services: Phone: 417-269-2900 or 1-800-205-7665 Fax: 417-269-2949

Health Insurance for getting pregnant?

I'm thinking of getting pregnant, can anyone tell me what is a good insurance that would cover most of the bills I would have with dr. visits, delivery, etc. I can't afford to pay a lot.
--------------------
The answerers who have said WAIT are correct. You will need to make sure you request maternity coverage when you obtain insurance quotes. Maternity is not covered under a standard plan. Then, wait. All insurance companies have a probationary period. For standard insurance, this is 3 months. During the probationary period, you do not want to do ANYTHING that will make the insurance company think you intentionally took out insurance to cover something you had in mind to do. If you do, you will be dropped, or your rates will absolutely sky-rocket. Unfortunately, with individual insurance, your rates will rise dramatically after your pregnant, as your insurance company has to start dishing OUT more money than you're putting IN....that's how they work... If you include maternity coverage, yes, you will need to wait at least 9 months before becoming pregnant. Sorry. A re-pricing plan is not a good strategy. That will get you 1/3 off your hospital bill. When the average hospital maternity bill is $15,000 or more, having to shell out $10,000 is not a great plan. And that doesn't include doctor's visits... Please check into OB/GYN clinics provided by medical schools. They are typically lower in price than doctors in private practices. For more information, and to obtain insurance quotes, please see: http://www.health-insurance-low-cost.net… Best Wishes.

Do you think American's should be required by law to purchase health insurance?

Why or why not?
--------------------
hell no, for what reason? unlike car insurance which impacts other people this is an individual decision, just watch when, and if this thing goes into full affect, the corruption, waste, fraud and chaos which WILL follow will lead to an unmitigated disaster, guaranteed!

My sister has cancer and she needs an operation but she has no health insurance?

She is a single mom and barely makes it does anyone know of any programs that will help her out. In san diego
--------------------
She should check with the hospitals cancer social worker to see what is offered locally. She may qualify for medicare or medicaide. If not there is a program called Hill Burton offered at many hospitals throughout the US which has free or low cost health care. The American Cancer Society has good suggestions for people seeking financial aide: ACS: Medical Insurance and Financial Assistance for the Cancer Patient http://www.cancer.org/docroot/MLT/conten…

If you had your housing, utilities, health insurance, and transportation paid for...?

What else would you "need"? Groceries, clothes, entertainment, etc.
--------------------
If I don't own any furniture under this scenario, I would need that. I would also need property insurance. Then I would need groceries. Assuming I already have clothes to wear, I wouldn't *need* any more. I also wouldn't *need* entertainment. One of the best things to learn is how to distinguish "needs" from "wants." I would want new clothes, entertainment, fun gadgets, and restaurant meals, but I wouldn't need them.

obtain health insurance while unemployed?

I am a army veteran and retired big city firefighter and am now looking for work but unemployed at present. I am 60 years old and still have to work and jobs are scarce. I'm looking for adequate health insurance and have looked on the internet.

Nothing available through your city retirement? See an insurance broker that handles individual insurance plans and see what they can offer.

Why to Health Insurance companies put profit over people?

Is it because like Conservatives, they care nothing for people?
--------------------
It's because they're companies and they are obligated to maximize profits. I would not agree that conservatives do not care for people, and I don't believe that health insurance companies do not care for people either, they just have their priorities set for them a little bit as a company that legally needs to maximize profits for shareholders.

If Health Insurance doesn't cover pre existing conditions, wouldn't that rule everything out?

Since many diseases occur because people are genetically predisposed to them? How much longer until insurance companies check your DNA, to see if you are a potential diabetic? Why have insurance for eye care? since thats typically a genetic problem as well.
--------------------
On the news just a few weeks ago, there was a woman denied for coverage because she was pregnant, a "pre-existing condition." I think they meant that she was pregnant before she got insurance, but it's still so idiotic.

Currently I pay 5% of my gross annual income for daughter's health insurance. Is this too expensive?

What are your thoughts? How much do you pay? I don't have her on the plan my employer offers because the coverage is terrible and the deductibles are high. There are no additional co-pays for her insurance, just the monthly premium and everything is covered.

My wife is pregnant and we do not have health insurance? We are not US citizens and have zero income.?

We are living off of student loans as I am in grad school and my wife stays at home with our 1 child. We live in Parma Ohio. We looked into medicaid but I don't think my wife qualifies, seeing as we are not citizens but are just here on visa's. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what we could do. We could afford to pay 2-3 thousand dollars but it seems like it could get crazy and there is no way we could do more than that. Impossible. Any helpful suggestions would be great.
--------------------
Believe it or not, just because you're not a US citizen doesn't mean you don't qualify for Medicaid. Some non-citizens still qualify so you can fill out the application and if you don't qualify they'll tell you. If you don't qualify you can always talk to the hospital and tell them what you can afford. Most people don't know that medical/hospital bills are negotiable but they are, very much so, in fact. They have a whole department that is specifically for billing and they will work with you on the cost of things based on what you can pay, and they will establish payment plans if needed. Your wife can get care at a local clinic/health department for little, sometimes no, cost (based on your income, which you say is 0). She may even qualify for presumtive medicaid which will just cover her prenatal care at the clinic (you apply for it there). Good luck.

health insurance and prexisiting condition?

I just bought health insurance and am planning to go to get blood tests done to get on accutane. I went to a derm a while ago and have been waiting until I get insurance to go any further. So if I go get blood work done and then go back to the same derm is this considered a pre existing condition? Will the insurance cover the blood tests?

Where is this money going to come from that is supposed to cover the poor's health insurance?

I am also going to point out that pretty much every state already gives *free* health care to those who are poor at the expensive of taxpayers. Those who are uninsured either haven't filled out the paperwork in order to be part of the entitlement programs or don't want to.

Where can I get inexpensive health insurance as an individual?

I need for 4 months until I start job. I am age 21 and healthy
--------------------
If you only need it for four months you'll need to get a short term medical policy. You can contact any local independent agent to find one. They are designed for people waiting for insurance. They are inexpensive and don't have all the bells and whistles but they'll cover you for catastrophic accidents or illnesses. However, they won't cover any pre-existing conditions.
