Does individual health insurance qualify for tax deduction?

I am employed, however i am paying my own personal health insurance instead of opting for the group insurance which my employer has since it worked out to be cheaper than group insurance. Now when i am filing my taxes can i claim medical insurance premium as tax deductible.
--------------------
Healthcare Insurance Premiums are deductible as part of Medical and Dental expenses. Only the amount of all of your medical and dental expenses that exceeds 7.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income can be deducted. A better bet is to see if your employer offers a Section 125 Premium Conversion Plan (more commonly known as a "Cafeteria Plan", which would allow your employer to deduct the cost of the premiums pre-tax and send it directly to your insurance company. If your employer was willing to do this, then ALL of the money you spend on health insurance would be tax-free (not just income tax, but free of all OASDI, Medicare, and State taxes as well).

Is there such a thing as Supplemental Mental Health Insurance?

My spouse needs to see a therapist/psychiatrist and we have pretty good health insurance. But there is a $50 co-pay for a specialist and we can not afford it. He needs to be seen 4-6 times a month and that is not possible. Does anyone have any advice?
--------------------
Your only other option would be th see if you can get him help through your local mental health center. They can find help for lowincome mentally ill folks. However if you have insurance you may be out of luck..... he may have to cut back on the number of visits he has each month..... Insurance companies often limit the number of visits a year you can have to a therapist (mine limits it to 20)..... so you may want to call your insurance company and get a better picture of theor mental health benefits... often they are completely different than medical benefits. For example, my therapist is not treated as a specialist but like a physical therapist would be....... smaller copay but limited visits every year.....

Can you claim birth control on your health insurance?

I just got a job that offers benefits and health insurance is one of them. I have been wanting to get on birth control for a while now, and I wanted to find out if I could cover it with my health insurance. Does anyone know?
--------------------
Most health insurances cover birth control. My insurance covers just about every kind. Some only cover generics but in most cases those are always available. The best way to fnd out is find out what insurance the company offers and get a number, call it and ask them what types of birth control is covered with the insurance.

What are the disadvantages of not having health insurance?

I am writing an essay for a schloarship on the importance of health insurance, however I am not exactly sure how it work, pros and cons, etc. Thanks for helping :)
--------------------
Not having any form of insurance means if you get sick you have to pay the bills all by yourself. Nowadays, with health costs the way they are, a person cannot afford to go without insurance. All it takes is one single severe injury or disease to wipe out an entire lifetime of savings.

We cant afford health insurance, is there anybody knows where to get help from the government?

Me and my husband can't afford any health insurance specially my husband got hurt and doesnt work right now, he got hurt when we are moving and too bad he is wearing crutches for months now and nobody will hire him to work, I need a prescription medication so is he, what shall we do? Thanks for reading and hopefully you can help answering my questions , thanks again.
--------------------
Consult with the physicians who prescribed the medications. If they are expensive products, some of the manufacturers offer 'compassionate care' prescriptions for no charge. You might have to go through a few hoops to get them, but it works. If they are generic, check at WalMart to see if the prescription product (or an equivalent generic) is on their list of $4 products.

Where do I deduct Health Insurance Premiums for a Sole Shareholder?

In the publications I've read, it said for sole shareholders of an s-corporation NOT to deduct health insurance premiums pre-tax from their payroll checks. However, I am working on our 2006 taxes and don't see where we will claim this medical insurance expense. Am I just missing something obvious? Where do I report this ... and I'm pretty sure it's not combine with "medical expense" because we don't have to reach the 7.25% of AGI threshhold.
--------------------
This gets deducted on Form 1040, line 29 (self-employed health insurance deduction). It is subtracted from gross income to arrive at your AGI. it is NOT included with medical expense as an itemized deduction on Schedule A. here is a link to Form 1040 and its instructions. http://search.irs.gov/web/query.html?col…

Do you think putting more taxpayer money into health insurance will actually make our people healthier?

When so many famous people who obviously had good health insurance die young, I have to question the assumed relationship between health insurance and health. Would this money perhaps be better spent on projects that would improve the public health, such as cleaning up polluted water, sewage overflows, air pollution? Of course, personal habits like diet and smoking play a part, but we can't blame all bad health on them. Health insurance is about making sure that the doctors and other health providers get paid well. But if they are not keeping the population healthy, is that money well spent?
--------------------
I think too many people think health insurance is to pay for routine doctor visits, checkups, minor illnesses, prescriptions, etc. That's one reason it's so expensive. When your car needs an oil change, or you get a flat tire, does your car insurance cover it? No, car insurance is for when you have an accident and the repair is too expensive for you to afford. Health insurance ought to be for when you have a serious accident or illness that is too expensive to pay for. Why should we pay a hundred dollars a month just so we can save a hundred dollars on a doctor visit once a year?

How does the French health insurance system work ?

Ok so im still writing this essay on how the health systems in france. However I do not understand how their health insurance works. So could someone explain it simply please. I understand that most of their Health expenses is covered by the state- but that is all i get. http:// kamisiapmembantu .com /health-insurance.html
--------------------
waw ! are we supposed to answer in a few words ??? to make it simple, there are different "regimes" (systems) that will refund approximatively 70 % of the money spent. state agents are "covered" by the Government itself employees are "covered" by the CNAM (national fund), that receives the money from the companies independant workers (doctors, farmers) must choose a private health insurance that will cover them. For all, the 30 % remaining is refunded by the private insurance that every one MAY have. Excepted the soldiers, who are "covered" 100% in any case

Will you be forced to pay for health insurance should the health reform bill pass?

My dad, who is a hardcore republican (and a kind one at that, btw), says that you'd HAVE to pay for health insurance, otherwise you get arrested, should the bill pass. I don't know if this is true or not. I can't say I'm all for it, but I don't know a lot of the pros and cons for it. Could someone also perhaps elaborate for me?

I don't believe you'll get arrested . . . but there is a fine if you don't purchase health insurance.

Should I switch myself and the baby to his health insurance?

I am three months pregnant and getting married in May. The baby is due at the end of October. I currently work full time and have my own health insurance, and have registered my upcoming birth with my health insurance as well. If I get married in May, and do not enroll in my husband's health insurance within 30 days, will I still be able to enroll myself and the baby once my maternity leave is over if I don't return to work? Is it better to just enroll myself and the baby right after I get married, instead of waiting until after the birth? Will I be able to enroll even though I was pregnant before I was married? If I do enroll in his insurance, I will be enrolled in a health insurance plan through my company, and through his. Can that be done? It seems like a waste of money. If there are any HR people out there who could help, please respond. I get so confused with all of this stuff!
--------------------
Yes you can enroll even though you are pregnant (but call them to verify). If you are thinking about not going back to work I would switch now. You should be able to cancel your health insurance once the new plan is active. They will just want proof that you are on the new plan.

Can an employer refuse to hire because you don't qualify for thier health insurance plan?

Ok, so under current law (until changes take effect anyway) health insurance companies can deny an individual coverage due to a pre-existing condition. I know that companies who employ over a certain number of people (I don't know the exact number) are required to offer their employees health insurance. So therefore can a company refuse to hire an individual because they don't qualify for that employer's respective health insurance plan due to their physical condition?
--------------------
First, employers are NOT required to offer health insurance. Second, at the time of hire, the employer would have no way of even knowing if you "qualify" or not. Most group employer plans are REQUIRED to accept all employees - although they may exclude certain specific preexisting conditions.

What percentage of both private and public health care spending is spent on health insurance?

What percentage of both private and public health care spending is spent on health insurance provided by small business employers?
--------------------
I don't think anyone's narrowed it down that far - especially because the definition of "small business" isn't standardized. I can tell you, health spending is about 18% of our economy.

Can a health insurance company cancel coverage on a college student going to school in NY, if they live in NJ?

I found out my fathers health insurance company canceled my health coverage. I was under the impression that there was a law on the books in New Jersey that said health insurance companies could not drop full time students.

Health insurance can be very tricky. Since I live in Georgia I'm not familiar with the New Jersey regulations, so I suggest you call a nearby health insurance agent. http://www.americaschoicetoday.com/Health-Insurance.html They will be able to assist you.

Has anyone purchased or know any details on iCan health Insurance?

Being without insurance right now is awful, and I saw this commercial for iCan health insurance, it almost sounded too good to be true. This is the health insurance company that Billy Mays owned when he was alive. Does anyone have experience, or know of anyone with experience dealing with this insurance? Thanks!
--------------------
Despite what Billy says in the commercials, it's not 'real' health insurance. It's more of an indemnity plan that pays flat amounts, but if it (for example) pays $500/day in a hospital and the hospital costs $5,000 then you'll have to come up with the difference. Any way you slice it, it is definitely not a comprehensive major medical plan. Just find a health insurance broker that does business in your state. I have links on my site to brokers in every state. A broker can find you a comprehensive health insurance plan without the surprises. And, insurance brokers are absolutely free to use and insurance is too complicated to attempt to go it alone.

Why do you think it's the governments responsibality to provide you Health Insurance?

I mean really. I have worked for the same company for 30 years. And I have always paid for my own insurance. Why do you think now, that America is broke, either candidate is going to give you Health Insurance? And why should they? They won't be able to spend a dime for at least 2 years.
--------------------
If most of you know, I live in Mississauga, Ontario (a town next to Toronto). And I am an American citizen married to a EMS Paramedic of Toronto Ambulance. Let me tell you the truth of Canada, rather than the lies that politicians say about Canada. Ready. There is OHIP, Ontario Health Insurance Program that is the free healthcare but its not free, you pay 40% of your gross pay in taxes. You are left with 60% of your gross income but then there are other deductions from your gross pay, that will include the premiums to your Healthcare Insurance (Manulife Insurance Company). And then to union dues and whatever they want to take out for their government. Let me say this to you in my experience, my husband is a EMS paramedic but after all the withdrawals from his gross pay, he is left with $8.80 per hour net pay for a 40 hour work week, so if he makes $3,000 for two weeks he gets $800 for the two weeks payperiod. I am saying this to you all, cause as you know I have left tons of comments on here about Obama, and how he will ruin USA. He will, from my observation and reading, he will be taking USA to Marxism. We see it in Canada, they say he is a Socialist Marxist and if he is in then Canada will have problems since we are so close to USA. Obama wants to tax everyone, I don't care about his retoric of only a few, but how does he expect to pay for his social programs?? Okay, back to the Heathcare of Canada. I can't get eyeglass includes lenses and frames from the free healthcare OHIP, so people pay out for OHIP in their taxes, but they can't get the glasses, that's if you pay for your own health insurance from the withdrawals out of your paycheck, then you can, ah, but you have to come up with the full amount (meaning saving your cash for months on months to pay for your glasses and appointment, and then give it all to the Eye doctor and hopefully you will be reimbursed from your Manulife Insurance for that amount a month later. You can't just bill your insurance right when you go for your appointment, you have to have the cash saved up already to go to the eye doctor. And the dentist, geez, there is no free healthcare for seeing a dentist. You have to have your own plan to see a dentist. So you're wondering what the healthcare that Canada brags about for the people, it's for when you are so sick and dying they will help you die under their substandard healthcare hospitals, and suck the money from OHIP to allow you to lay in a hospital and die with drugs that are billed to OHIP and of course your death is not covered by OHIP, you have to be saving on the side to a funeral home cemetary to make them payments each month to be buried there. And then you think Canada is so wonderful, I am an American citizen, ready to hear about how they treated me when I was pregnant with my son? I didn't have OHIP cause you only get OHIP when you become a landed immigrant and pay your $1,600 fee to be "permanent landed immigrant". ( So illegals get no healthcare, like I see that Mexicans get in USA, that should be stopped, in my opinion). I had to pay $800 to the OBGYN, and $500 to the hosptial for 12 hour stay to have a baby. I walked into Humber River Finch Hosptial in North York upper Toronto, and I was told there was no labor room for me since they were all filled up, to wait or walk home, I walked home in the snow up to my knees. I then got a call at 4pm to tell me that there was one labor/delivery room available now, to start walking. I started to walk and got there in labor that was ready on its way. I got into the room, the doctor examined me and said"Here's a paper (looked like a tapworm) and he inserted it into me and said, "You'll have a heavy labor now." He walked out of the room, I was left having labor with Paul by my side watching a basketball game, and I didnt have iv's or help. I was told since I forgot to bring $400 cash with me for an epideral shot that I wouldn't get on, and at age 45 I would have to go through this labor without any help. So after 4 hours of labor I realized I wanted to push, and I did and the baby boy was pushed out, and the doctor said, 'Push on the broomstick handle." Ladies, there were no knitted stirups on that delivery table for my heels to push on!!!! I pushed my feet on the broomstick handle and the nurses said I was doing good, torn a bit in the vagina, and that the male doctor said he will have to stitch me up with a thread and needle without any numbing shot since I didn't bring extra cash, I thought maybe my $800 to him would have covered that or that $500 for the hostpial stay, ahah NOPE I had to feel each in and out of the black thread going in and out, the nurse covered my mouth to drown out the screaming and my husband had to push on my chest and arms to keep me from moving upwards in pain. I felt like the woman in ROBIN HOOD movie starring Kevin Costner where she delivered a baby by C-section and Morgan Freeman had to stitch her up wi

Where else can I sign up for health insurance?

I missed my company's October 30th deadline and am wondering if I can get health insurance else where. I am new to this. Never really seen a doctor in my 21 years.
--------------------
Any health insurance will happily sell you coverage, but it will cost you much more than what you would have gotten thru your company. That was a costly mistake. You can check around with any of the major health insurance companies, but you might be better off just to go ahead and either sign up with the company that your employer goes thru or wait until next year. If you do hold off and wait, put the money aside somewhere safe.....just in case you need it. Check any search engine under Health Insurance. I don't like to put names for this category since I am not nuts about many of them.

Will you be able to afford health insurance when the premiums go up?

My insurance premiums have skyrocketed in the last 3 years, yet this year the insurance industry will be required to cover pre-existing conditions for children and also for adult children up to the age of 26 (and sometimes longer). I doubt that I will be able to afford the new premiums. When preiums go up, who will be left that can afford health insurance? .
--------------------
Bellevue, you're wrong that's why you get the thumbs down. Johns Hopkins is in my back yard, so you'll never have access to the health care I have unless the system here is completely undermined. And, yes if you make no money then your payroll taxes will be less. And, you're only counting your payroll taxes. You're not counting the roughly three times the amount that your company pays. Sure, your company is paying it and not you, but where do you think American companies would get that additional tax? They're either going to cut payroll (lay people off) or they're going to cut salaries. You can't just expect other people to pay for things, because those other people have to get the money from somewhere. And, health insurance here for the healthy is not expensive at all. A couple weeks ago I could insure an entire 20-40-something family with maternity coverage for about $300-$400/month. Of course I say a couple weeks ago, because those plans are all going away (that plan is gone as of two weeks ago). If insurance companies are going to have to cover every pregnant girl that walks through the door then why cover maternity? I talked to a guy 3 weeks ago about insuring his daughter for $80/month off his group plan. He called me this week to get it done only to find out that children in America can't buy their own plan anymore. So, now he has to pay $200-$300/month to get her on his group plan at work. I also had a client who just sent me an e-mail last week that said, "my insurance went up from $261 to $344. What is that about?" My response...."new health care bill...."
