What happens in America if you get injured but don't have health insurance?

I live in England and we have the NHS so all our medical treatment is free. I'm curious as to what would happen in a country like America if a person got injured but didn't have health insurance or couldn't pay the hospital bills? And is the outcome the same if the person is a child???

If it's an emergency, the hospital is required to treat you regardless of your ability to pay. However, they will bill you for it, and the bill may be very large. Without insurance, an overnight stay in an American hospital can cost tens of thousands of dollars, depending on what they do. Sometimes the hospital will work out a payment plan where you pay the bill in installments each month. If you can't pay the bill, they will turn it over to a collection agency, which will harass you until you pay or declare bankruptcy (medical bills are the number-one cause of personal bankruptcies in the U.S.). Most hospitals also do a certain amount of charity care for low-income individuals.
