I am planning to visit france and the UK for only a week and I am trying to apply for a visa. Do you think it is impossible to get the visas in a week or so? They say I have to have insurance in the application form, do I really need to?

A visa is not necessary unless you're going to be there for more than three months. If you will be applying for a visa sometime, though, and if you don't have health insurance, then research travel insurance companies. There are several which offer you specialized insurance for travel, especially if you are travelling with a program or organization.
