Affordable and good quality health insurance in CA? Any thoughts?

Anyhow, I just lost my job and the Cobra option is way too expensive (over 500 dollars/month). I'm currently unemployed and so is my wife, and I'm looking for affordable, yet quality health insurance. Anyone have some suggestions? Thanks for your help.

Most insurance companies will not write an individual policy on you if you're unemployed. The reason for this is because they assume you will be searching for employment and could soon get a job that has health benefits. It takes the insurance company 5 or 6 months to recoup the money they spend writing a policy if you don't use the insurance, longer if you do. You can get a short term medical policy for a reasonable premium. This type of policy doesn't have all the bells and whistles of a permanent policy but will cover you in case something catastrophic happens. Visit a local independent agent to see what is available in your area. The agent will have access to all the major plans and can explain the coverage of the policy.
