What is supplemental health insurance?

And how is it different from regular health insurance?
--------------------
Major medical pays for doctors and hospitals. A supplemental policy pays you cash benefits if you are sick or hurt. The policy pays a predetermined benefit amount. The idea is to help you pay for additional daily expenses you might incur (baby sitters or gas money) or for deductibles and co-pays that you might be responsible for. The cash benefit is paid to you. You choose what you want to do with the money. It gets more complicated quickly because there are numerous type of policies and benefit plans available to choose from.
