Why were republicans against mandated health insurance when the idea was theirs to begin with?

you are absolutely right, it's nothing but politics. The republicans believe that they can convince enough of their ignorant screaming base that this is a bad idea, and that nobody will really care that it was a republican idea in the first place. They believe that somehow they can convince folks to let hypocrites run the government as opposed to democrats. It's the old adage of lawyers. "When the facts are on your side, argue the facts. When the law is on your side, argue the law. When neither are on your side, scream like hell." So they just scream like hell.
