If I visited New Zealand, was injured and I didn't have health insurance would New Zealand pay the bill?

If I were to visit New Zealand on holiday and I were to be injured and I didn't have health insurance, would New Zealand pay for my hospital bill? How much would I typically have to pay?

If you were injured through an accident (not a disease or medical problem), yes, you are covered through the New Zealand Accident Compensation Corporation. New Zealand provides free care for all accidents for everyone in New Zealand, including tourists. According to their web site - htttp://www.acc.co.nz/claims/am-i-covere… : ACC offers 24-hour, seven-day-a-week, no-fault eligibility for comprehensive injury cover for everyone in New Zealand: • no matter what you're doing or where you are when you're injured – driving, playing sport, at home, at work. • no matter how the injury happened, even if you did something yourself to contribute to it. • no matter what age you are or whether you're working – you might be retired, a child, on a benefit or studying. Visitors to New Zealand are also eligible for cover, as are New Zealanders who travel overseas on short trips. However, the ACC will not pay for any changes to your travel you may have to make because of the injury, or any lost wages you lose to injury if you are not working in New Zealand. For this reason, you should have travel insurance as well.
