I have to get health insurance-I have a close friend, basically family who could use it as well. Is it possible for them to receive coverage under a group/family plan of mine even though they live in a different state?

No. Health insurance carriers will only allow you to cover yourself, your spouse, and children/dependents (and in some areas, your domestic partner). Unless you're married to this person or gave birth to this person, you're out of luck. Sucks.
