Are people who have medi - cal allowed to also buy their own health insurance?

Will the insurance that they buy often allow this or how does this work? Is it legal? Doctors say that medi-cal is not good enough for them so they usually want you to have good health insurance. What is good health insurance and how does it differ from medi -cal ? Insurance is insurance right? How would they bill medi - cal and the other insurance together? If you have a deductible can medi-cal cover what is not met before the deductible of the health insurance you obtain additionally?

Hello there, By using the term Medi-Cal I'm assuming that you're in the state of California. If you purchase health insurance directly, you are not allowed to have any other coverage (group health coverage, medicaid, medi-cal, etc.) There is not coordination of benefits (billing one insurance, then the other) when you're dealing with a health plan that you've purchased directly. When it is discovered that you have medi-cal and also a privately purchased health plan there are two situations that could possibly happen: 1) The private health plan will be cancelled because you have other coverage. 2) Medi-cal may inquire about your income eligibility to have state sponsored benefits. If you have the income to purchase private health insurance you may no longer meet the requirements for state sponsored coverage. It is certainly challenging with the government contemplating cutting payments to medi-cal providers when they're not receiving that much money to beging with. However, a conscientious physician will continue to provide the care to his patients and deal with his frustrations outside of the examining room. Good luck! Kathy K www.premiumwatchdog.com
