What happens if I don't have health insurance and go to the emergency room?

Do they send you a bill? What happens?
--------------------
They'll send you a bill. Assuming you're in the US, emergency rooms must treat your emergent symptoms regardless of your ability to pay. Many hospitals are not-for-profit, and they will provide non-emergency treatment on the same basis. If you can't pay the bill when you get it, call them and they'll usually set up a payment plan for you. When you do that, don't overextend yourself financially. If you agree to $25 a month and you can pay $50, go ahead and pay $50, just don't agree to it. They will be more patient than most creditors and work out more generous terms.
