Need to change health insurance, not open enrollment, what are "circumstances" that will allow the change?

My ex-husband was just ordered to pay for health coverage for our daughter but I have a feeling it will be a REALLY long time before he does obtain it. One thing that my hold him back is his health coverage, it is not open enrollment and I'm not sure what the circumstances are that would allow him to change coverage now. I know one of them is if you have a new baby, is court order one of those circumstances?

There's something called a "life event" that is usually when you change insurance. Court order health coverage is not a "life event". But the company is still required to abide by the court order and establish the insurance. It doesn't matter if it's open enrollment or not. Don't spend time waiting for your husband to get around to doing it, have your lawyer send the notification to the employer (if there is no lawyer, you can do this). Also, if the company has a court order, most companies will make sure that the insurance is not changed without a change to the court order. Life Events = marriage, divorce, birth, adoption, change in spouses employment, change in/loss of spouses insurance, change parttime to fulltime or fulltime to parttime, hmmm... I think that's all of them.
