If my friend's mom is hospitalized for 10 days with no health insurance, how much could she owe?

She only worked a job making about $30,000 a year, and only has like $2,000 in the bank and a house worth $100,000 with a mortgage of about $90,000. Someone told me that she could come out owing about $20,000..is this true? Will she have to sell her house and file bankruptcy?? Should she write her congressman or Senaors and complain about how this illness is going to ruin her?

The actual amount can vary widely depending on what she was in for and what kinds of treatments she had, the meds given, if she was in ICU or had surgery, and whether she had a private room or not. Her best bet is to go to the business office right away to see if she can work out a payment plan and/or get the bill reduced through programs the hospital may have in place for people without insurance. The worst thing she could do is ignore the bills that come and avoid talking to the hospital business office. They make it harder on people who do that.
