should I get my own health insurance?

Right now I don't have any health insurance but I'm considering paying it out of my own pocket. Is this wise?
--------------------
Health insurance is critical for protecting both your health and your wallet. The cost of even basic health care can be very expensive. The average cost of a day in a California hospital is more the $9,000. A burst appendix can cost over $45,000. A health insurance policy limits your exposure. And the cost can be less than you think. The cost depends in part on how much risk you're willing to take in the form of deductibles and co-insurance (the percent of a claim you pay before the carrier pays 100%). If you take on more of the risk, your monthly premium will be lower. Shift the risk to the carrier in the form of a lower deductible and they'll charge more. But right now you're on the hook for 100% of the cost, so a high deductible might make sense for you. In California you can research the cost of coverage at http://www.InsuranceNeighborhood.com . You can also find a local agent to help you through the jargon on their site. A local agent can help you not only find the right plan, but help you with any problems that arrive once you have the coverage. Outside of California you can find local agents through their national trade association. The site is http://www.NAHU.org. Just click on the "Customer Resources" tab and then on the "Find an Agent" link. Hope this helps.

Health Insurance?

I've recently changed jobs. The job that I have right now doesn't offer insurance at the moment. While looking for affordable health insurance I got injured playing soccer (I was diagnosed with torn ACL). Any idea what shoud I do now? According to the doctor the surgery can wait few months. Should I hide my injury from the insurance company and get the insurance, then after some time fix my knee etc? Please help.
--------------------
Do not listen to the other Bozos answering your question. You really only have one or two real options due to your diagnosis and pre-existing condition. You will not be able to hide your injury from any insurance company now that you have had a diagnosis by a doctor while previously covered by insurance....they all report to the MIB (Medical Information Bureau) and you will be discovered sooner or later and your claim will be denied. If they did pay any claims you will be required by law to pay them back in full. Option # 1) Get a new job with "Group" coverage. Group is guaranteed issue and if you have had no break in coverage for more than 31 days (in most states) the one year pre-existing clause is eliminated and you should be covered immediately. Option # 2) Have your current employer (if they do not offer coverage) pay you as a 1099 self employed individual. In most states an individual that is self employed may apply for a "Group of 1" guaranteed issue health plan. If you have gone past your 31 days you may be accepted for the insurance but given a 1 year waiting period for pre-ex. conditions. Did your other job offer you COBRA? If you don't know, ask your old employer. If they did offer it, you have 63 days to accept it and assume the coverage....in which case your injury (if incurred in the 63 day window) would be covered.

Health insurance?

I left my job about a couple of months back.Im actively looking for a job and hoping to land something by next month.Im eligible for COBRA benefits through my former employment.I still have time to elect or waive the COBRA coverage.Im not sure whether I should elect it.I definitely don't have any planned doc/hospital visit in the near future,so I need insurance only for unexpected events.I have time until Aug first week to make the election.I might get insured through my new employer before or roughly around the first half of August but it would be about 4 months since I lost coverage from my previous insurance plan if I do not elect COBRA.I don't know if that has any significance and I don't know what exactly is the HIPAA rights.I read somewhere that a break in health insurance for more than 63 days could mean losing HIPAA rights and also have some other consequences like pre-exclusion.My question is what are the pros and mainly the cons of electing or waiving COBRA benefits?
--------------------
You need to take the Cobra. If you don't, and during your uninsured time you develope a problem that will remain with you the rest of your life (diabetes, cancer, fibromyalgia, kidney issues, etc), a new insurer can exclude any medical treatment related to that condition as "pre-existing". Uninsured medical issues are the number one reason why middle class people become poor people.

Can his family help him to get new insulin pump with their health insurance?

My friend's insulin pump broke. He needs a new one. it cost $7,000.00. He doesn't have health insurance.
--------------------
Your friend cannot receive benefits of his family's health insurance if he is not covered by their policy. He should really look into getting state insurance (Medicaid) if he is eligible. I'm not sure if they would help pay for an insulin pump, but they might cover office visits and other expenses associated with care of a diabetic.

Do gay couples get shared health insurance?

If a gay couple needed health insurance, would they each have to be covered individually or can they get a family type coverage? Does it depend on the state? I need another job, with health benefits, and I'm just wondering if I can cover both my girlfriend and I with it once we move in together.
--------------------
Mostly it depends upon the employing agency. But if your employer does offer health insurance for partners, be warned that the federal government views it as additional income, and you will be taxed at a higher rate federally. State taxes - depends on state tax law, but I don't know of any state where those benefits offered would not consider it as additional income.

Anyone have suggestions on dropping out of employer health plan and getting your own insurance?

Health insurance is so expensive, and we rarely use it. I am thinking about taking out my own high-deductible policy for catastrophic coverage and paying everything out of pocket. Has anyone tried this? Any recommendations for companies that offer high-deductible policies for catastrophic coverage?
--------------------
I would never suggest to not elect group coverage. Group coverage is cheaper because you are paying the group rate. An individual policy is usually a lot more expensive and your rates can increase every year. You can not afford to not have insurance. What would happen if you had a major medical claim. You can not work your way out of a claim for hundreds of thousands of dollars to some claims that are one million dollars. I decided to quit my "big boy" job 3 years a go. I did purchase a individual policy and my premiums have increased every year by at least 15%. I am now paying $174 a month for health and rx coverage (no dental and vision). If you are still thinking about making such a bold move, speak to an insurance advisor.

How fast can you receive a health insurance in Ohio?

A health insurance that is pretty cheap and good In Dayton, Ohio??????
--------------------
As fast as you can write a check for the coverage. However, it won't cover pre-existing conditions so if you're looking for coverage to cover an illness or injury or pregnancy that you already have, you're not going to have coverage for it anyway. Here's a website you can check rates for Ohio medical carriers.

Check into public hospitals. This happened to my cousin, with no insurance, and he got his out with no fee whatsoever. He did have to wait a few months, but it worked. Public hospitals here have health plans for people with no insurance. Once you qualify, you don't pay anything, except for prescriptions, nothing for procedures or office visits. Also find out if the county where you live has some kind of assistance. Sometimes teaching hospitals will help also. Care Credit is a credit card company for health needs.

How has your experience been with Blue Cross Blue Sheild Individual Health Insurance?

My current employer does not offer Health Insurance so I'm looking at different companies
--------------------
I have BCBS individual coverage. Like any health insurance contract you need to understand what is and is not covered. Once you understand that you can balance the two sides of the equation, Cost vs. Policy Benefits. The BCBS policy does not include the "bells and whistles" which makes it more affordable.

I was in an auto accident and now have medical bills. My health insurance paid them but doesn't the auto pay?

I have copies of explanation of benefits where my health insurance paid my medical bills from an auto accident. I live in the state of Missouri. Doesn't the auto insurance company still suppose to pay you the full amount of the bills?
--------------------
The health insurance company can "go after" your auto insurance company for reimbursement of any bills that they paid, if you purchased PIP or Medical payments coverage, up to your auto policy limit. YOU can't collect under both policies. Collecting under your HEALTH insurance automatically assigns them the right of "subrogation" - going after the other policy (either yours or the guy that caused the accident) for reimbursement.

People talk about immigrants getting free health insurance, how can I a low income citizen get some info?

I am a low income citizen and I have always payed cash to go to the doctor. I am making as much as a person can in my field without going to college, but my job does not offer health insurance. How can I get information on free health visits. The last time I called the local health department they said they only help out with parenthood stuff. Besides needing some good pain killers for cramps that I cant afford because my tubes are tied. Especially what my doctor prescribed to me, how can I get more info. on all this free stuff. I live in Columbia SC.
--------------------
You aren't going to get free painkillers, that's for sure. It's based on your income. If you make too much money to qualify for your county's department of social services free clinic, then you have to pay out of pocket like a lot of people do. You have to contact them and find out.

can you suggest a good, affordable health insurance plan?

I am an adjunct instructor at two colleges in Michigan. Neither institution offers health insurance for adjunct instructors. For the last three years I have been getting health Insurance through a postdoctoral fellowship. Now this fellowship has come to an end, and I am in desperate straits. I have heart problems and I need specials medicationss for depression and attention deficit disorder. What do I do?
--------------------
No one can suggest a good, affordable health insurnace plan for someone with heart problems, depression, ADD, and two jobs. There are government-funded programs that are free or affordable, but you make too much to qualify. There are affordable programs that insurance companies sell voluntarily, but they will refuse to sell you one because you have heart problems, depression, ADD, and two jobs. Therefore, you will have to get unaffordable guaranteed-issue coverage, such as a HIPAA plan or insurance from a managed risk pool.

If you don't want to buy health insurance and you pay the Gov. fine does that make you insured?

Obama states that it will be mandatory that everyone buys health insurance. This would be approx. $350 a month/$4200 a year. From what I've read, and I could be mistaken, the penalty for not buying the insurance would be $750. So if you pay the penalty does that mean that you are now insured?

Would you recommend Norwich Union private Health / Medical insurance?

Please can anyone give me their opinions on this health insurance provider... I am not sure whether to change from BUPA to Norwich Union. The covers seem to offer pretty much the same things though Norwich Union is £45 cheaper per month. I just wondered if anyone had any good or bad stories or personal experiences they'd like to share about either company?
--------------------
Norwich Union are a reputable company - which to my knowledge do not own any hospitals direct where as BUPA do. I have always felt that BUPA tended to give a gold plated service - for which you pay for - as well as having to fund the cost of their hospital , doctors and staff etc. whereas NU are more about covering actual costs of cover and weigh up the risks carefully on the policy side. You really have to look at the small print of the policies that are offered and the true level of cover and costs covered regarding and illness or condition. Its always a tricky one with health cover as all companies can be difficult over any condition believed to have been present before a policy start date but I don't think NU are any worse than anyone else in this field. Another to consider is Standard Life - which I think compares similarly to Norwich Union.

Along with all those others who can not get insurance. Like type one diabetics, those with juvenile onset arthritis and the like. I guess in order to stop paedophiles getting healthcare, we should accept that loads of others will get screwed as well. I am always amazed how many Americans seem not to be aware about the real healthcare issues relying instead on FOX and other sources to spread lies about the healthcare system of the USA and those abroad. I mean, if healthcare in nations with universal coverage is so bad, why do they keep it? Obama wants to make insurance more available to all and change the system so that it gives the American people value for money [1]. He also wants change so that the insurance companies find it harder to get out of paying for treatment. The system he is proposing looks similar to that which works in Taiwan where private companies are involved in providing healthcare [2]. Obama campaigned on reforming the healthcare system. He said he wanted to make insurance more available and he was elected by the American people to do this [3]. FACT - the US has higher death rates for kids both for kids aged under one and those under five than western European countries with universal health coverage [4,5]. FACT – American insurance companies push up prices and work to stop paying out claims on those they cover [6]. FACT - the USA spends more on healthcare PER PERSON than any other nation on the planet [7]. That means that a dead American four year old would have had a better chance of life if they were born in any western nation with universal health coverage. If you do not like the policies that Obama was elected to bring in, he can always be voted out of office in 2012. But if you disagree with the facts, please let me know. I am always willing to learn, but please provide proof. None of those who disagree with me have been able to do that so far.

Could someone explain health insurance deductibles?

What is a deductible? Is it a good thing or a bad thing? Do you want a low deductible or a high deductible? I ask because while trying to find some affordable health insurance, one company said it was $45 a month with $0 deductible. What does this mean?
--------------------
The deductible, is the amount out of your pocket, before the insurance kicks in. Having a deductible, lowers your monthly premiums. There's no one size fits all answer, to "is it good to have or not". But that $45 a month with no deductible - isn't INSURANCE. They don't PAY anything. It's access to a DISCOUNT plan - with no guarantees that the doctors on the list will actually give you a discount. Can you spell "ripoff"?

So your husband is the subscriber. YOU are the guarantor - the person promising to pay the money if the insurance declines to pay. You would also be the guarantor for any of your minor children.

How strict is Humana health insurance with pre-existing conditions?

I've had acne since my teens but it's really been bothering me lately psychologically and hurting alot when trying to sleep on my back from cysts. Also sometimes minor acne on my face has been causing permanent scars. I want to go to the dermatologist and see if I can get accutane, but I just got my health insurance beginning of the year and had no creditable coverage before that. According to their written policy, I might not be eligible since I actually went to the doctor and got antibiotics for acne less than 24 months before enrollment in the health plan. I would like to say that the condition manifested itself in the past month psychologically which caused me to seek out accutane, which is true. Should I even mention my past diagnosis can they check it somehow? I really don't want to pay $3000 out of pocket for accutane, but I feel I really need to do this now for my own well being. What should I say to the doctor, how much will they investigate preexisting condition
--------------------
For $3000 in bills after you've been covered for only a few months, they are likely to investigate it pretty thoroughly. Also, Acne is something that is ongoing so it wouldn't be all that hard to prove that you've had a pre-existing condition. A lot is going to depend on how that pre-existing condition clause reads on your coverage.

Question about health insurance and oral surgery?

I am getting health insurance through my employer but it does not include dental. If I have to get oral surgery, (after being referred by my dentist) could it be covered under my regular medical insurance?(since it is surgery and would not be done by my dentist, but by an oral surgeon) I realize I can find this out from the Insurance company, but I don't have the cards yet and the oral surgery is not certain. I would just like to be prepared before this all comes about.
--------------------
Your health insurance likely covers all types of necessary surgery as ordered by a doctor. (not elective surgery like breast implants) If your insurance does not have dental, that means it will not cover work or products done by a dentist. Oral surgery is usually done by an oral surgeon and is usually covered. Your plan document will spell that out or you should be able to call the benefits hotline for confirmation.

no health insurance and have a preexisting condition. Can I start work? or is there any insurance available?

I live in GA. We just got an insurance and told them about this condition. It's very small surgery for my daughter. but now they are denying it. Is there any other insurance I can take? or if I get insurance through work would that help?
--------------------
Some group policies at work do not care about preexisting conditions. Some do. It is usually the private ones, not work connected that up the rates. Probably something to do with---- if you can work, then you probably are not too sick, or disabled, so you can be insured. If it is a dependent child, would you need to take insurance for you as well as the child, and what is the waiting period. Work insurance takes a while to go into effect. You may have a rider or whatever it is called, that will exclude treatment, or make you wait so long to have insurance, or treatment for the preexisting condition. I don't know for sure, you could find out some how who the employer or potential employer uses and check it out on line or by calling the company.

How do we fix the health care problem Republicans and Demarcates if Universal health care insurance will fail?

I made the argument for Universal health care Insurance, I have heard the arguments against it, I would like to know what would fix the problem if it won't work?
--------------------
It doesn't fail, almost every first world country has it setup as a system. Unless of course you view treatment of the poorer people a failure. The benefit to not treating a lot of people, is faster care for the wealthy. If you don't want to have universal health care, the government can step in and price fix medical procedures like they do in japan. It works okay for them. They can afford adequate medical treatment because the government forces it to be affordable, and the same prices in rural as in urban areas. The real problem with our system, coming from someone who has an entire family in medicine (Doctors, surgeons, nurses)...is the insurance companies. They buffer every side. The doctors, the hospital, the patients, everyone has to get insurance, and they are the ones forcing prices higher and higher.

Ok, im a single female, i just got a new job and i was told in 3 months, i will be getting health insurance named Oxford. Does anyone have this? is it good insurance? ladies, do u know if it will cover birth control ?
--------------------
Oxford is a company based in CT that is owned by United HealthCare - the second largest health insurance provider in the country. It is a good company, although they have problems like any other. Birth control is covered in most cases, depending on what state you live in, and sometimes what company you work for. Certain companies, like religious organizations, can opt out of BC coverage. I would suggest asking your HR department for a copy of a benefit summary. They should have them available for you to review prior to your enrollment.

Who covers pre-existing conditions? Hopefully I won't need surgery for many years but I think I should get insurance now instead of waiting. Any ideas? Do you know of any company that allows you to work at home and offers health insurance? Thanks
--------------------
I'm sorry for your health issues. In America, it's a sad state. Most companies will not take you. But your luck might be best served in your State's High Risk Pool. In Nebraska, for example, where I'm at, it's call the NE CHIP program. If you google your state plus high risk pool, your state may have something for you, however, it sometimes can be pricey, varies by state. Also, most state administered high risk pools will have certain requirements, for example, to be the state resident for at least 6 months to a year, or to have certain health conditions that qualify, or to be declined within 6 months for private insurance first. Your second option is to apply for a job that provides good group health insurance. I know that's a tall order, but with your current medical conditions, it's a way to get automatic coverage. Last option is to look at a health or medical supplement or medical income/expense plan. These plans are limited benefit, but if you find the right company, it'll be some coverage to help with your bills or loss of income while you are receiving care. Does anyone know of a good health insurance?

I broke my wrist 2 years ago and ive been meaning to have it fixed. It healed cruked and the pain bothers me from time to time. Does anyone know of a good health insurance that would imedietaly cover this injury. I have no insurance and want one but dont know which one will help me the most.
--------------------
There is a lot about this situation that you didn't say...how much you can afford to pay, your age, etc. There are some excellent online sites that can help you find affordable health care. I am an independent agent, which means that I work for myself and represent many companies. But, rather than make this a sales pitch, I guess what I'd want you to know is that it is very unlikely that any health insurance provider would cover any sort of "preexisting condition", and if you were to misrepresent it, in most states, that is a crime (they call it fraud). Do you have any sort of accident policy that might pay something towards the surgery it would take to treat the injury? Some of these may not pay either, but you'd come closer to getting an accident policy to pay than you would ANY health policy after this long. Good luck, but the lesson here is, once this injury is treated, it's better to have the insurance in place BEFORE it is needed.

Do you know who doesn't have health insurance besides Americans?

The Pew Hispanic Center estimates that about 59 percent of the 11.9 million illegal aliens living in the United States have no health insurance, making up about 15 percent of the nation's uninsured. Hospitals receiving Medicaid funds must provide emergency care for anyone who needs it & as often as they need it even if they are illegal aliens.
--------------------
Most of you will think me heartless and cruel, but I feel that we need to limit the amount of publicly funded medical care we provide for illegal immigrants here in America. I truly feel for those who legitimately need our help, but we can't be responsible for all the world's needs while ignoring our own citizens. As a first responder, I've seen first hand the abuse of the medical system here in America. Citizens with health insurance wait in lines to be treated while illegals receive treatment ahead of them because of a technicality. You can't refuse service in an emergency room if the patient arrives in an ambulance, and the ambulance can't refuse service to anyone who requests it. A system designed to provide for life saving care for those who otherwise couldn't afford it has been abused to allow for free care to anyone who know how to play the system. Far too often I'm called to a home for a medical emergency only to find yet another minor, non threatening case where the patient could have easily gone to the hospital on their own and avoided the ambulance entirely, but chose to call one anyway because they knew how to play the system. Someone has to pay for that ambulance ride and it's not going to be an illegal without insurance. We must secure our boarders, if we don't we will eventually follow in the footsteps of history and succumb to the slow bleed that threatens to bleed us dry.

The IRS only wants you to pay your taxes. You got some things confused: The new law will allow your parents to cover you under their insurance until you are 26 years old if you don't have health insurance. Whether or not you will be forced to have it is still up to debate.

Where can someone get health insurance?

I have friend who is a druck driver but he cannot get a job because of high blood pressure. He cannot get health insurance because he cannot get a job. Are there any programs out there for unemployed folks so they can get health insurance for medication so they can work?
--------------------
Health insurance should be available to your friend. If his high blood pressure controls his high blood pressure, he will probably be able to find coverage. You can click below for a link to the website of your state's insurance department. From there you should be able to get a list of the companies that offer health insurance in your area: https://lovetherates.com/insurance-infor… I recommend getting quotes and information from several companies. You should check: The insurance companies' networks or lists of doctors. Whether or not any pre-existing conditions are likely to be covered. The deductible. How preventative care is covered. The cost shares (deductibles, co insurance and copays.) The premium or cost.

Federal tax exemption for health insurance?

What does it mean when there is "federal tax exemption for health insurance".. in simple words so i can understand clearly.. thank you.
--------------------
Health insurance premiums are not taxed at all under the following situations: 1. The taxpayer is employed and pays his health insurance premiums out of his pay before he pays taxes on his pay. This is "pre-tax". 2. The taxpayer is self-employed and pays health insurance out of his net profits. But there is no general exemption from federal tax for health insurance premiums.

So now have health care insurance is bad?

First we hear about how horrible it is that people don't have health insurance.. But now Obama wants to tax people for having it?
--------------------
Yes. It's bad because it is not government insurance. It is only bad to have private insurance. You don't hear anyone wanting to tax those who receive medicare, medicaid, or SCHIP (if the people on SCHIP don't smoke, they don't pay for this benefit). No one wants to tax the people in our jails and prisons for their medical benefits. Only those who work and have the gall to have private insurance. Shame on the people who are not on governmental medical programs. How could they ever think they could get away with having a private insurance without being punished for being the self-responsible people that they are? It was a horrible idea when McCain brought up the idea but now times are different. This administration will say that they are "reaching across the aisle" by doing this. It will be the Republicans' fault. Actually, the idea fits in very will to get all of the American public to "see the light" and embrace total government health insurance. Why would anyone want to pay for the national health care system through taxes, pay their portion of private insurance costs, and then be taxed extra for having that private insurance? Using Kiran's example, that would be about $1,500 a year. What's the harm in paying the government an extra $1,500 a year in taxes? It's a lot of harm to me, but maybe I'm different than most people.

Family health insurance plan or individual health insurance plans for each person?

I am quoting health coverage in Kansas for my family since we do not get this from an employer. My agent suggested that each family member have a separate insurance plan instead of one family plan to cut costs. I have never heard of doing this? Any comments or suggestions? Thanks
--------------------
Usually, it would make more sense to have everyone one the same plan. However, I have heard of circumstances where some members of the family have a separate policy, because of one family member's health issue. The healthy family members can stay on a lower premium policy, while the family member with the health complication goes on their own policy. It really just depends on the circumstances involved. Make sure to get quotes for each scenario, so that you can make a fully informed decision.

Why do people think the insurance companies are lying when they say the Baucus health care bill will raise?

the cost of health insurance for Americans? The Baucus bill requires all future health insurance policies to include: Cover all preexisting conditions. No life time cap on claims. All doctors office visits. Dental coverage on all policies. All prescriptions included. All mental health issues. How can Liberals gloss over the fact that that's going to make health insurance more expensive? Just saying the insurance companies make too much money already is not going to change reality.

They wrote the bill. It's a corporate welfare check. We need to get rid of the private insurance industry altogether and institute single-payer.

Will I be covered with health insurance during Army BCT?

I know I signed up for the max life insurance, how does health insurance work? Are you automatically covered while on active duty for training (I'm National Guard) or do I need to sign up for Tri-Care?
--------------------
It's my understanding that you'll ONLY be covered by Tricare while you're on active duty orders for the Federal Gov't...not State Call-Ups. But, talk to your National Guard recruiter or someone with your unit to be sure. I don't know, nor do I think, you can carry Tricare when you're not on orders. As far at the life insurance goes...that's a totally different ball game. You're paying for a service and it's guranteed. But, with health insurance you're not paying for anything.

What's a good alternative to health insurance to cover just major expenses?

For husband, wife, and one child - we don't run to the doctor for sniffles or minor cuts but we want to be protected so we don't lose our home in case of cancer or other major expenses. Company names of reliable insurance, please ?
--------------------
In the first part of your question, you're asking for an ALTERNATIVE to insurance. In the second, you're asking for insurance companies. Sounds like what you're describing, is health insurance with a very high deductible - like $10,000. It cuts the cost for health insurance for your family, about in half - maybe from $1200 a month to $400 or $500 a month. Your local agent can help you shop for this, and find plans in YOUR state and city.

My husbands insurance expired shortly after he passed away leaving us without insurance. I received a life insurance sum which prevents me from getting on medicaid. I am expecting a little boy in July and am seeking insurance that won't wipe us out financially. Any ideas?
--------------------
Unfortunately, and I hate being the bearer of bad news, unless you get a job that has health insurance with maternity benefits you are out of luck. No individual insurance company will accept anyone pregnant; that's like trying to get homeowners insurance after your house burns down. Even if they did accept you most plans have a 12 month wait for maternity. You should contact the doctor and hospital and set up a pre-payment plan with them. Explain you don't have insurance and they'll work with you. Depending upon where you live you can expect a bill for a delivery without complications to be in the $3000 - $5000 range. Just cross your fingers and hope you don't have complications.

What is the difference between a traditional health insurance company and a HMO?

I'm in medical assisting school and one of the questions I have to answer for my homework is : Discuss the differences between HMO's and traditional insurance plans and I can't seem to find the answer. HELP!!
--------------------
That must be a very old question. HMO plans are now considered traditional plans with group policies. I don't have exact figures but if I had to guess probably two-thirds of all group plans are HMO's so if that's not traditional I don't know what is. In the past, when HMO plans first came out, Indemnity plans were considered "traditional" plans but it is rare for a group policy to be an indemnity plan these days. It is slightly more common with individual policies. PPO and POS plans are much more common. The main difference between the plans is an HMO has a doctor network while an Indemnity allows you to visit any doctor, and therefore is much more expensive (PPO and POS also have a network). Also, the managed care model of an HMO is absent with the other plans. That is probably the point of the question and probably what you need to focus on.

How do you get health insurance for a newborn?

I am 19 weeks pregnant and read in a book about picking out a peds dr to examine my baby at the hospital. But I don't have insurance on her yet. How do you get insurance for a newborn? Me and My boyfriend are both covered by our parents insurance until we graduate college and we can't just add her on there. How do you get insurance for just a newborn and how much would it cost? And where do you go to? Also last year I made 25000 so I don't qualify for much government stuff. Thanks
--------------------
Unless the baby goes onto an employer group plan, Medicaid, or some other type of government insurance, you won't be able to insure him/her at the time of birth. To get enrolled in a private insurance plan (one you purchase yourself), the baby needs to "pass" their early medical checkups. It may be several months (up to a year even) before you can purchase insurance for the baby after he/she is born. And if that newborn is born premature or has any medical conditions, they may be uninsurable. (Meaning - you won't be able to purchase a policy for them at all. No company will take on the risk.) Your best bet is for either you or the father to get a job that comes with insurance benefits, or to make sure that the baby qualifies for some type of government insurance. Purchasing your own policy will be very difficult, and even if you're able to buy one, it will be expensive. If you'd still like to hear your options, insurance-wise, you should contact an insurance agent in your area.

--------------------

Why don't people understand the difference between health care and health insurance?

Everyone seems to think that just because you have insurance, it makes you healthier and makes medical bills cheaper. Why can't people understand that the doctor still gets paid. Its just now the doctor gets paid and the insurance company gets paid too.

Hi, response to your question, even in this educatin 21st century there are wise fools, even if we try telling them the difference with different aspects and examples, things wont change so let the wise fools remain what they are and a smart person like you keep moving knowing the fact, tell the difference to those who are willing to understand, and most importantly willing to hear, its fruitless and useless wasting precious energy telling someone who is neither interested in hearing or understanding. How does a new business bill a health insurance company?

My husband's parents have recently started their own sober living business. Their new client is trying to have them bill his insurance company. How would they go about doing this?
--------------------
If they are business liscensed to do this business they request forms from that insurance company, and fill them out, or they can simply say, call your insurance carrier and find out how to submit a claim, they do not have to do this in most states. If they are not liscenced with the state, there will be no getting the insurance company to pay for it. Make sure they understand the laws, call the business liscensing agency, and let patients know, they are not covered by their insurance, so that they get paid by the client. Its definatly worth the time to find this out, if their ins wont pay and the person is poor like most are, they will not be able to pay back arrerrs rent, so take cash up front to not lose money.

Do health insurance companies in the US cover people all over the US?

Or is that that there are certain companies for certain cities/state? How much does an adult have to pay averagely for health insurance?
--------------------
Some plans like Aetna and United Healthcare are nationwide. Blue Cross Blue Shield has variations in all 50 states. Some plans are regional or state-specific. I don't know of any that go as specific as city. As far as an average price - impossible to answer accurately. There's too many factors in determining price - such as type of coverage, location, and business or individual, and if the employer picks up part of or all of the tab. I'm going to guess, based on my experience, that a single adult pays about $500-$1000 a month. My plan is $450 a month for just me. My parents pay about $700 a month for just the two of them. I know someone who pays $3500 a month for their family of six.

Will health insurance cover a nanny if my wife was put on bed rest by her OB for the rest of her pregnancy?

We are pregnant with our second child and have a 15 month old son. My wife is at home with him and is his only caretaker. Due to some complications with the pregnancy, she has been put on modified bed rest -- which means no more lifting our son, or running after him. We now need a babysitter to be here when I am not. I wonder if there is a way to get our health insurance to cover (some) of the cost of the babysitter since my wife is physically incapable of caring for our son.
--------------------
No, insurance isn't going to cover something like that. This is just one of those things that are part of parenthood sometimes. Thousands of women have to be put on bed rest or have lifting restrictions during pregnancy when they have other kids. You will have to help her all that you can. Is there anyone in your family, like one of your parents, that could possibly come over and help your wife during the day? If you can afford it, you can take off work on FMLA (family medical leave) for up to 12 weeks if you have worked at your job for a consecutive 12 months. Unfortunately it is just something you guys will either have to figure out or hire someone to come in and help your wife take care of your other child. But you will have to pay for it yourself.

I'm trying to get benefits started with my friend's budding business, but she's broke, and the more I'm looking into benefits, the more I'm learning. Like how my health insurance comes out of her pocket, for the most part, through an employee benefits plan. And she can't afford that until her company takes off. So my question is, as an individual, how much would health insurance cost me, myself, a month versus how much would it cost me through employee benefits?
--------------------
If you are 20 and perfectly healthy, and not overweight, with nothing wrong, and no maintenance meds, without materntiy benefits, in Pennsylvania for example, a good low/no deductible comprehensive policy will cost you around $225 a month. For group plans, with maternity, if the employer pays half, it will usually cost you around $200 a month for the same level of coverage.

What is so bad about single payer health insurance?

I believe I've heard Clinton accuse Obama of wanting single payer health insurance in a previous debate. Basically something like Medicare where the money comes from one source--most likeley government? people are making a big deal about it. What is this exactly and is that a bad idea? i find it quite intriguing..
--------------------
Well, the term speaks for itself. SINGLE PAYER Health Insurance is a MONOPSONY. Like a Monopoly, i.e. one seller and its evils, Ms Clinton and others want only one Buyer of Health Care, i.e. a monopsony. Just like you do not want to only have the choice to buy a Yugo, you should be able to buy your medical care by yourself. Overtime Ms Clinton's medical care will use the power of government to dictate price and procedures of medical care --- You see this in miniature in cities and town where one employers is the 1000 kg gorilla in the market. If you are a MD or Hospital you accept what the employer sets for payment or you starve or move away. With the government you cannot move away. Your medical privacy will be trashed --- see what the current status of medical privacy under Kennedy and Clinton at the site below. What is bad about it is that it destroys incentives for everyone. It destroys the incentive of the young to stay healthy because they will never bear the cost of over-eating, drug use, STD because these costs would be passed on to the population (subsidize bad behavior). It is unfair to the elderly, who will be the biggest buyers of health care in the next 10 years to the point that Ms Clinton will (to safe funds that cannot exist), will refuse treatment to grandma and she will die sooner and more painfully then she would if she could buy her care. Think of only being able to buy your clothes from the Mao Boutique --- one colour, one size, one style. It is not the role of government to pay for health care --- it is a restriction on personal freedom. Do you know anyone on Medicare? Do they like it?

Does NJ have a law stating an employee has to work X hours before they are eligible for health insurance?

My hours just got cut and my employer will continue paying my health insurance - but I found a blog site & someone stated NJ requires a min. of 25hrs/week in order for an employee to participate in a group health insurance plan offered by their employer. This is to avoid business owners from adding friends & family to the policy. Does anyone know if this is true & where I can find this formally stated on a NJ.gov website?

the insurance Company makes the rules not the employers, most insurance companies require employees to be full time but it is not law just there policy

teacher still under contract being asked to repay health insurance?

I'm a new teacher leaving on school district for another. I've given my notice and fulfilled all my contractual obligations but am currently under contract in my first school district until the end of August when I can start my new job. The old school district is demanding I pay back for my health insurance for the summer months. How is this possible when I'm still under their contract? I've had all the insurance deductions as normal throughout the year.
--------------------
You are under contract for them for a full year. If they paid your full annual salary, over the course of 10 months that you worked, you DO owe them premiums. They do NOT have to let you work out your contract. Confirm that with your union rep.

Are you one of the man Americans without health insurance? and if you are what are we going to do?

I'm a single mother of three boys and I run my own farm and I have no insurance, not beacuse of the money but because many health insurance compaines will not accept my youngest child with Epliepsy,so what are we americans do to .The rich and the poor will and have suffered, what next?
--------------------
Yes and its a shame. Even through work people often end up paying half of their pay check taken out for insurance, and most of the time it doesnt even cover everything. How are you suposed to pay your outher bills that way? A lot of nonworking familys qualify for Medical assistance but whats out there for the lower middle class who work and still cant make ends meet? I guess you either have to be rich or very poor to be healthy in this country. I think that health and dental care should at least be free for all children. If they reivaluated what they do with all of the tax money that they take from us, the money thats going to help people in outher countries, (that should be going to our own) they could come up with a solution. After all, why should we be feeding peo[ple in outher countries when there are so many people here in our own back yards who need help?

If I get employer-provided health insurance, will I still have any freedom to choose what kind I want?

Say that I get a job, and one of my benefits as an employee is health insurance. Does this mean that I either have to (1) accept the employer's health insurance unconditionally or (2) refuse and find an insurance company to get health insurance from OR, are people able to negotiate what kind of insurance they want with their employers? Or do some companies allow negotiation and others don't? I don't get it. Does accepting employer-provided health insurance mean you lose freedom to choose or something? Thanks.
--------------------
There are many variable factors here. It would depend on who your employer's health care provider is. What plans are offered. What percentage, if any, does your employer pay toward the premiums. If your employer has a specific benefits department to shop for and negotiate with different health care providers. It sounds like you don't have the job yet, so maybe you should worry about first things first.

Does a baby need Health insurance right when the baby is born? ?

How much does it usually cost? ....... Is it the law that everyone HAS to have health insurance or is it just really necessary? My parents still pay for mine cause im 16. But the doctor said that its my job to make sure it has health care. So is it possible that the baby can get free health care? Like is there a program that offers you any health care for your baby?
--------------------
Yes, your baby will need coverage. I got pregnant with my daughter when I was 20 and was still on my parents insurance so all I did was pay my co-pay and I was covered. They covered my daughter as well after I added her to our policy as long as I pay about 100 bucks a month for her and a little for her visit for her vaccines, check up. It's extremely important to have coverage for your child. You may need to take him/her to the hospital and without coverage you'll pay more for one visit to the e.r. then you would for a whole year of insurance coverage. There's medicaid you can get, I looked into it, but since I had coverage and had the ability to put her on mine it wasn't something I wanted to do. Just look into it, you have to do research a/t everything..pregnancy, your baby, you need to be extremely prepped for what's gonna happen.

Anyone heard of meritain health insurance?

This is the health insurance offered by my future employ employer. I would like to know how people rate their experience with this company? Do they cover anything?
--------------------
It's good insurance for your needs. Generally they offer a few plans that allow you the flexibility to only pay for what you need or what you feel you'll use. It can vary from location to location, but you can have an option that is low out of pocket, but high deductible, or a fully insured option that is lower deductible, but a higher out of pocket (paycheck expense). Again, depending on your employers particular plans, you may also get a benefit card that has stored funds on it that you can use for various medical expenses including co-pays, medical equipment, and even aspirins or cough syrups. I've had no problem signing up or having my benefit account funded. I've also found that the doctors that I use do take the insurance with no qualms. They also are able to provide access to different health networks (again, determined by the employer choices) that ensure you can have access to almost any provider.

What health insurance is available?

I cant afford my insurance offered at work. I live in southern Ca, and I could probably afford around 100$'s and lower a month. Im in good health and it would just be for me. 26 years old.
--------------------
Most insurance companies have several plans from which to choose, from a budget plan with little coverage and many exceptions up to a full comprehensive plan. Most complaints are from people that just shop price, get the budget plan, then are upset because they don't have the coverage they wanted. Do not try to do this over the internet unless you have several days to intelligently compare plans. You need to visit a local agent that works with all of the major companies in your area. The agent can explain what you get and, more importantly, what you don't get with all of the plans. They can find the best plan for your situation and budget and can help you weigh the benefits with the premium. There is no extra charge using an agent.

question about preexisting health issues with new health insurance?

My husband is about to get laid off, and I am currently feeling as though I have diabetes. I have an appointment next thursday for it, however, what will happen if I do have it, will the other health insurance he'll get with another job cover my meds?
--------------------
Preexisting health issues only come up if you go uninsured for a while and have a gap in your coverage. I believe you can go up to 68 days without insurance before you are labeled as previously uninsured or having a gap in insurance. If that happens, you are in trouble. Every time you go see a doctor you will be scrutinized. May have to prove that even a new problem is not preexisting. Major head ache. If your husband gets laid off he should purchase COBRA insurance from the employer until he finds a new job with insurance. Call your husbands human resource people and they will explain all this to you. Do not go uninsured even for a day. Hope this helps.

When you are diagnosed with a new disease like diabetes, would your insurance premium go up for health coverag?

Like say if your employer was paying for you health insurance would it matter how sick you are and what the doctors put you on or what they diagnose you with as to how much the employer would have to pay on your policy?
--------------------
No, if you are diagnosed with a new "disease" your insurance company cannot raise the premiums. In any case if your employer is paying for your health insurance it means that you are on a group rate which goes up once per year or so - for the entire group and not for one person. If you were paying yourself that means you had an individual insurance policy and when the next period comes along the insurance company might raise your premium to a point where you may not even be able to pay. It all depends on the company and their policy in dealing with these ":new discoveries" Rest assured that once you are on a group policy you are not singled out for a premium increase beyond what the group would get

Can S-Corp deduct the advance payment made to coming years's health insurance premium?

I am >2% owner of s-corp. My wife also is an employee. In december 2009, Company has made an advance payment of $1000 to the Health Insurance Compay for our health insurance premiums for January 2010. All other premium payments for 2009 went into my W2 Line 14 as S-Corp Meical Insurance. How can I take care of this extra $1000 in my taxes (Both 1120S and my personal 1040)?
--------------------
You are talking about two different things here If the company paid an advance of $1,000 that has nothing to do with you or your W2 - you didn't actually pay it yourself. The amount you pay shows up on your W2 and when it comes out of your pay it is credited to an arbitrary account that the billing has been entered under - if the company made an advance payment it would be charged to "Prepaid Insurance" in your COMPANY balance sheet. This would not show up in your payroll check as a deduction at all.

Why do people think the democrats are proposing free health care? It is mandatory insurance.?

They are proposing mandatory health insurance. Tou will be paying $4.000.00 a year for insurance. It will be law. If you do not maintain a health care insurance policy you will be fined.
--------------------
Actually, you would be paying more than $4000 a year for insurance. The Senate bill will cost the US taxpayers $2.5 TRILLION over the next 10 years, and that will only cover the first FIVE years that the thing would be in effect given that it won't even go into effect until 2014 (Just in time for whoever is elected President in 2012 to get into office. ANY Rep or Senator in my state/district who votes for these bills will NOT be getting my vote come this upcoming election in 2010. BTW, if you don't pay that fine, you will face a $250,000 fine AND up to 5 years in Federal prison.

How much for Health Insurance?

I am turning 18 in 4 months. I am most likely going to be moving back with my father. I am currently under my mother's health insurance but it's only for certain doctors and I will be living in a different state as her, so I will need to get my own health insurance. How much would it be for Health Insurance for me. I have diabetes so I need to get it. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.
--------------------
To buy it outright, on your own? Probably more than you can afford. Catastrophic policies are often $150 a month for individuals. And if you want GOOD coverage - it goes up rapidly from there. See if your father can carry you under his until you can get coverage through your workplace.

Right now my dad buys our family’s health insurance through his employer and we are covered until age 25?

whether or not I am in school. My mom applied at a place where if she gets the job I would have health insurance until the age of 24 if I am a full-time student. What happens if she gets the job in between semesters? Which policy would apply? Serious answers only please.

your fathers insurance covers you until you're 25 period. unless he drops you on his insurance.

When small business cant afford the Obama mandated health insurance for their workers who will pay?

Just one more reason unemployment will continue to rise under a Democratic Congress and an Obama White House. Small business cannot afford the costs our government is extracting.

What can happen if someone finds my Drivers License, Health and Auto Insurance cards?

I lost my Drivers License, Auto Insurance Card, and Health Insurance Membership card. If someone found these items together what could they do with them? Could they use my health insurance to get treatment or rack up accidents on my auto insurance? Open Credit cards in my name? etc.
--------------------
You should call your health insurance company and ask them for a new policy number. You should also call your credit card companies and report your cards stolen.

Can health insurance company drop you if you making COBRA payments on time?

My sister is in a nursing home. I have been paying her COBRA since December. The nursing home called and "warned" us to find a medicaid facility because her health insurance will probably drop her. Why?
--------------------
I do not believe this is a COBRA question but an allowed coverage situation. Medical insurance covers treatment expenses, such as for physical therapy or other skilled care when a person is in a nursing home, as long as they are making continuous improvement. When a person is no longer improving but still needs assistance this is called custodial care and is not covered by medical insurance or Medicare.
Source

Do you think the health insurance bill will become law?

Simple question. and you notice i called it health insurance rather than heath care as it has almost nothing to do with the enhancement of care, but rather how to pay for it, or more specifically, make those who don't want or need it pay for those who do.
--------------------
I think so, but what gets passed will be so watered down as to be toothless. At least it is a start, and I hope we can improve on it from there. You can bet the conservatives will continue doing all they can to keep it from passing, but I have a strong hunch Obama will do all he can to get it to pass. ##

why do people get health insurance if if is such a bad deal? everyone complains that they rip them off and?

dont cover conditions that they were supposed to cover. so wouldnt it make more sense to not get health insurance and just save your own money?
--------------------
I've never had problems with my health insurance, they've always paid up. My husband is in and out of the hospital and we pay only what the plan specifies---200 ded and 20% up to $5000. I had an even better plan but had to change now that I live in one state and my family in another.

Can a health insurance company cancel coverage on a college student going to school in NY, if they live in NJ?

I found out my fathers health insurance company canceled my health coverage. I was under the impression that there was a law on the books in New Jersey that said health insurance companies could not drop full time students.

Health insurance can be very tricky. Since I live in Georgia I'm not familiar with the New Jersey regulations, so I suggest you call a nearby health insurance agent. http://www.americaschoicetoday.com/Health-Insurance.html They will be able to assist you.

Has anyone purchased or know any details on iCan health Insurance?

Being without insurance right now is awful, and I saw this commercial for iCan health insurance, it almost sounded too good to be true. This is the health insurance company that Billy Mays owned when he was alive. Does anyone have experience, or know of anyone with experience dealing with this insurance? Thanks!
--------------------
Despite what Billy says in the commercials, it's not 'real' health insurance. It's more of an indemnity plan that pays flat amounts, but if it (for example) pays $500/day in a hospital and the hospital costs $5,000 then you'll have to come up with the difference. Any way you slice it, it is definitely not a comprehensive major medical plan. Just find a health insurance broker that does business in your state. I have links on my site to brokers in every state. A broker can find you a comprehensive health insurance plan without the surprises. And, insurance brokers are absolutely free to use and insurance is too complicated to attempt to go it alone.

Where else can I sign up for health insurance?

I missed my company's October 30th deadline and am wondering if I can get health insurance else where. I am new to this. Never really seen a doctor in my 21 years.
--------------------
Any health insurance will happily sell you coverage, but it will cost you much more than what you would have gotten thru your company. That was a costly mistake. You can check around with any of the major health insurance companies, but you might be better off just to go ahead and either sign up with the company that your employer goes thru or wait until next year. If you do hold off and wait, put the money aside somewhere safe.....just in case you need it. Check any search engine under Health Insurance. I don't like to put names for this category since I am not nuts about many of them.
