What are some good options for travel health insurance?
My husband and I are traveling to East Africa from the USA for 9 months and need to find medical insurance that will cover us abroad. What are some good, fairly inexpensive options? Are there any insurance options specifically for international volunteers? Our budget is about $250/month for both of us. Thanks

What does health insurance subsidy mean?
This is for those out there that know this lingo, because I dont. It was on a job posting and I think that it means they put a portion of payment into your paycheck so that you can pay for your own insurance. Am I correct?
--------------------
It means, they contribute towards the cost of your health insurance. Not necessarily that they give you extra money in your check. Most of the time, they TAKE your portion of the cost from your check, and cover you under their group plan.

How do I get Travel/Health Insurance in Vancouver on a working Visa?
I am moving from Australia to Vancouver in August, obviously I will have my normal travel insurance, but since I will be in vancouver for 2 years on a working visa - I would be looking at getting something alot cheaper than travel insurance. What would be the best option for me? I thought about just getting travel insurance for the first month or 2, then once I am settled down look for a cheaper option. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

The government health care plan in BC is called BC Medical Services Plan(BCMSP), and their website will have info on whether or not you would qualify for it, or at least you can email to ask. Even if you qualify, there will be a waiting period of between 2 and 3 months after you apply before it comes into effect so be sure to have travel medical insurance in place during that time. If you don't qualify for the government plan, there are private companies who will sell you medical coverage. Pacific Blue Cross is one, Great West Life is another.

Is it personally responsible to not have health-insurance and pass the cost to taxpayers...?
through emergency room drain? That doesn't sound personally responsible to me. It makes sense to have everyone purchase health insurance because if they don't, that cost gets passed to everyone.
--------------------
The cost of private health insurance is out of reach for many people. If one isn't working, because they can't find a job, even the cost of Cobra isn't much cheaper. If one can afford it and doesn't have it, then it is irresponsible for them not to have health insurance. If one is poor, or near/at the poverty level states have state funded insurance, Medicaid, or in California, Medi-Cal. Given that there are health programs for low in come people, they should take advantage of it. I believe it's free, so there would be no cost for the individual, they would have a Doctor and wouldn't have to go to emergency rooms. Without getting into a discussion about illegal immigrants, they will go to emergency rooms. As a nurse I know that the legal, or illegal question isn't asked and if these patients need care, they would be transferred to county hospitals for further care. Illegals also somehow get state funded insurance, but my experience has been they are only covered for emergencies. The illegal immigration problem definitely a burden on tax payers, but that's all I'll say about that. It is irresponsible not to have health insurance if you can afford it, but don't want to pay for it and equally irresponsible not to have Medi-Caid, ot Medi-Cal if you qualify.

Can I put my disabled sister on my family health insurance plan through work?
I can't afford to pay for separate insurance for her. My parents are dead so it is up to me to take care of her now. Are there any other options?

Are you her legal guardian? Is she legally incompetant? Is she your dependent? If the answer to all of these is yes, then it's quite possible you CAN.
